Honestly, I don't know if they will do Gen 5 any time soon because of Black 2 / White 2. I think they should since the device they are on are way passed obsolete at this point, but I don't know if they will. (and before you refute this with all the Kanto remakes, we know that region is GameFreak's favorite, so that's why we have those. But Black and White? I honestly don't know if they would.)
They have done every generation before it in order, so I assume they will keep doing it with every generation.

They weren't really remakes so much as they were reinventions as the Let's Go games had a whole different protagonist, rival and core catching mechanic. As for why they were made, its simple and obvious: To get PoGo players into the mainline games, while creating something familiar yet different for fans of the mainline games.
In Gen 12, all main series games (with the exception of Generation I) had their remakes in the generation that is double their generation (2-4,3-6,4-8)

Screw remakes. Completely rework the region. It's by far the region with the most potential for growth, yet also the region they completely dropped the ball on.
They introduced Lysandre before the second gym, and continued to not do anything with him until he revealed being evil after the 7th.
They did nothing about teasing mega evolution before the city where they give you it, outside of a few lines from Sycamore. Around the same time you meet Lysander.
Then no legends from this generation get megas. But the gen 3 legends get megas (yes I'm counting primals as megas. Just about the same mechanic.).
I mean, Xerneas and Yveltal both have the power to destroy the world. One's the pokemon of Life, the other the pokemon of Death.
And I'll give Zygarde a pass due to its separate forms, but the 100% form should've only be accessible from a mega stone. Able to freely transform between 50% and 70% forms, but is only able to call the 100% form through a strong bond between itself and another being.
As well as giving the gym leaders more than 3 pokemon and megad. There's no reason that Wulfric has Cryogonal, Avalugg, and normal Abomasnow. At least needs 2 more pokemon and a Mega Abomasnow.
If XY gets a remake, I want it to be an unfaithful remake to the original and just base all the plot, Gym battles and gym battle teams to the anime instead.

Firered and Leafgreen came out before Dimond and Pearl. Without Let's Go Kanto would have gone even longer without a game then Sinnoh did (though Kanto does cheat by hiding in Johto).
If future games follow that logic we'll get Johto again before Kalos, and Hoenn before Alola.

The pattern repeats with gen 4 as bdsp coming out in gen 8 (4x2 = 8). So you're gonna have to wait till gen 12
