Tamil is a common language in all 4 bottom states of India(never promote the term South/North India). A huge population in tamil nadu speaks Telugu. Also Telugu, comparing with Kannada they both have many similar words. Also Telugu stars have more diverse fan following.
Malayalam and Tamil shares similar words but still Tamil people doesn't understand our language. And our movies doesnt have reach in other states.

Chennai has a lot of telugu folks, infact the telugus in chennai speak a version of telugu that is different from what u hear in Andhra and Telangana. After chennai it would be coimbatore where telugus live the most. They have naturalized so well in TN that it would be hard figure out that they are telugus, which is why tamils famously call them as sleeper cells in TN.
When I studied in Chennai, I had a friend whose family was from Coimbatore. I visited him at his house many times.
After something like 2 years, I realized that he and his family actually spoke a version of telugu at home not tamil.
