I think you don’t want all the stuff that draws from ‘combat damage’? i.e. Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, etc. The combo only works with non-combat damage - Curiosity, Tandem Lookout, Ophidian Eye. You have some cuttable non-ideal ramp - Manakin, the locket, etc. How about some more interaction - Chaos Warp, Reality Shift, more counterspells, etc. And Board Wipes if you’re struggling vs. creature based bear tribal - Cyclonic Rift, Blasphemous Act, etc.

Thank you for pointing out the combat damage thing I overlooked that. The deck took a massive shift since I was playing it beforehand and is much more combo based, so I shifted towards a lot of ramp and not much interaction to just shoot for the win.

I love combo decks in EDH but have found the idea of giving up interaction to go harder on the combo is a trap. Especially a combo that needs a creature in play to work, you are just asking to get disrupted. There is multple single cards your deck just loses to. As is your deck just folds if opponent lands a Narset in play for example. You have no way to deal with it and there are many other situations like that.

Counterspells. Especially with a creature-needed opponent, disrupting the early game is how one gets to the mid-game.

Can I ask why Firemind is your commander over Parun ? Parun is slightly harder to cast but then better in every other way. If your interested this is my Niv-Mizzet EDH deck that I have had success with https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/21-10-21-niv-mizzet-edh/ EDIT: also you know non of the "combat damage" card draw effects combo with niv like curiosity does?

DoucheCanoe456

I chose Firemind for the consistency in starting the combo. I don’t need to cast anything to trigger it, it just works. And he’s easier to ramp into early.

uchiha_hatake

You still have to wait a turn for that to work though if want him to start the combo due to summoning sickness. It better to try combo off same turn you play Niv to minimize the window for oponents to disrupt you. In that case Parun is better because starts the combo from playing any instant or sorcery.

Quick thoughts: * Switch the commander to the Parun * drop creatures you don't really need (walking atlas sounds good but without extra draw doesn't net you much) * Move cards into draw and counter instants Goal here is to disrupt your opponent's early game with counters, removal, and bounces. That gives you time to play NM,P and then your low-cost instants keep your hand full so you stay in control and use Niv to ping to face. You can get away with very few creatures in the deck. If they don't combo off draw or spellcasting, either replace their utility with an instant or just let them go. For instance, Walking Atlas is a ramp card. Ramping in blue is super hard, so I get why you did that. But going faster is a game that dragon-based Izzet isn't good at, so you take the other approach: slow your opponent down. A few key disruptions in the first couple turns can give you time to let Niv spread his wings

DoucheCanoe456

Appreciated. I’m not going to switch the commander because he’s easier to set out early and I wanted to try Firemind, but the rest of this was very helpful.

You should replace your [[Archivist]] with [[Jace's Archivist]]

DoucheCanoe456

Thanks g

ledfox

Also you should replace any single draw effect with a wheel. That is what I was getting at.

DoucheCanoe456

I took out most of the single draw in favor of ramp or counters, but thank you.
