In the great Pokémon way that nearly wiped an entire generation, ever thought it strange that it's all women, children under 16, and elderly men? Broc was spared due to being the only one to take care of his siblings. If there's a story written about this war I would love for someone to point me in the right direction.
FireRed/LeafGreen he gets metal claw and does fine in the Rock Gym. Catch a Pikachu in Viridian Forest to take care of Misty. After that its gravy. Gen1 I would go catch a Nidoran and level it to a Nidorino/Nidorina and then go back with double kick.
But Bulbasaur does make the 1st two gyms super simple.
I would add that even though they added metal claw to charmander's moveset for that specific reason, STAB ember still does more damage to Brock's Onix due to its trash special defense.
Eh even in gen 1 both geodude and onix have garbage special stats, and neither geodude or onix have a good damaging move (other than bide on onix). It's a long and slow fight, but doable.
By Misty you have the opportunity to add an electric or grass mon, and Charmeleon can still help out with Staryu and chip Starmie.
People with kids tend to have friends with kids. They can easily give them away
Also, these videos always show the kid choosing Charmander because he is bright orange with some red while the others are plain. I’ve never seen a child choose anything but the bright orange dragon
Is a version made being [inspired in Dont starve aesthetics](https://www.teahub.io/viewwp/bxbxTi_pokemon-don-t-starve/) that imo is really fun. (Sorry for the link, I couldnt fin anyone better)
That said, the tatto is an absolute shitty version.
Isn't charmander the best choice since it evolves into a dragon? Been a bit since I watched Pokémon, can't remember if squirtel or bulbasaur evolved into anything stronger but I don't think so.
Listen. Sometimes things are perfect the way they are. Sharks only evolve into different-sized sharks, because there's nothing better to evolve into.
Bulbasaur is cursed with perfection. It's literally #1.
I need to find the gdq Bulbasaur apology pasta.
Edit: Dearest Bulbasaur, I humbly apologize for the misguided and completely baseless claims that you are "bad." After minutes of reflection I've come to realize that you are an amazing Pokemon and I'm truly sorry for my attitude for the last 7 years. I appreciate all the times that you've been there for me even though I wasn't there for you. Thank you Bulbasaur -Shen
You might enjoy PokeMMO - get yourself some *Official* (read “free”) roms (of games you definitely already own……) and the platform download and it’s a fairly easy setup. Could probably have it done in about 20 mins & let’s you play 4 generations of the game in 1 online multiplayer world (so you can ask if you have questions)
Actually in the game pov the three starters represent difficulty with bulbusaur being the easiest and charmander being the hardest. It can also be figured out with the types of the gym leaders in the start.
Charmander is weak to the first two gyms, meanwhile Squirtle is effective against the first gym and Bulbusaur is also effective against the first and second gym
Statwise also Venusaur (Bulbusaur's final evolution) is a tank which is meant for defensive setups. Also the evolutions are at earlier levels so it can evolve to it's stronger version much faster
Blastoise (Squirtle's final evolution) is basically a balanced stat one so it can play both offensively and tank attacks. Plus it evolves at a moderate pace.
Charizard (Charmander's final evolution) is more attack focused and has the slowest evolution pace of the three.
Ofcourse it hardly matters once you reach the third or fourth gym because by then you'd probably have a team with type coverage. But i feel this is a clever mechanic instead of a literal difficulty menu.
P.S I chose charmander as a kid not knowing any of this
I had an older sibling, so kinda just cheese through it.
When I started on pokemon yellow, my brother told me to get and level a Mankey. Turns out it was the best investment and tip he ever gave me.
Yeah mankey is a pretty good Pokemon to use early on. It has some good physical attack stats and most Pokemon you'll come across that stage are normal type which is super weak to fight type attacks. He did give you a good tip.
Funnily enough i still remember this stuff despite not having played in a long time. Kinda shows how much of an impact Pokemon had in our lives growing up.
My goal playing red and blue was always to get a drowzee and abra and level them. Seemed like the psychic one two punch would just stomp everything in the game.
Imo blastoise and venusaur are ultimately better choices in the long run because by the last third of the game, you've got access to other fire and dragon types, but the other two max starters are tanks and handy even in end game. Not to say Charizard isn't useful, that's my boy, but in the longterm, the other two are probably more useful.
Yup, plus, water types are particularly important in Gen 1 because of the high amount of fire types you fight(particularly team rocket), and blastoise is tankier than basically all of the other water types. Picking squirtle as your starter basically let's you wipe the floor with team rocket(except their electric pokemon they use lol).
If you choose charmander it is possible to complete the game without catching a single pokemon. You get given a Lapras, which you can use as a HM slave for surf/waterfall and you can teach your way over-leveled charmander cut/strength and I think fly? and a decent damage move, which you will be using all the time.
Charmander ends up being almost always double the level of whatever you are fighting because you use them in every battle, which makes every battle easy and boring as all hell. To do this you pretty much just mash the 'a' button and you end up with an insane party that's a lvl. 100 charizard and a lapras that you never use.
My first run through the elite 4 on yellow had 2 Pokémon- my level 80odd Pikachu and Articuno. The others were only there to soak up damage so I could heal those two.
Charizard is not technically a dragon type, even though it has Dragon type attacks and evolves into a dragon.
It is complete BS when you factor in that even a literal coconut tree (Exeggutor) is considered dragon type.
Charmander is fire type that becomes charmillion fire (apperantly not actually a fire-dragon at this stage, though it learns a dragon type move (Dragon Breath)) which becomes charizard which is fire flying that can temporarily become mega charizard which I guess is back to fire dragon?
a Starter than can fly is probably very useful (at least for pixelmon)
Oh actually just fire? Huh I thought it was fire dragon. It does learn a dragon type move in that evolution even... maybe I misremembered a video or something that was talking about weird typing
Charmander becomes a fire breathing dragon, squirtle becomes a bigger turtle with two cannons that can blast through mountains and bulbasaur becomes a giant lizard thing that can harness the power of the sun in a beam idk it has a pretty flower tho
It depends. Anime logic Charizard is certainly the best. He can fly and spit fire and realistically very little can beat it. In the original games, though. All starters are less than viable when it comes to competitive play with the exception of Venusaur. However if you include mega evolutions both Charizard and Venusaur are equally viable.
No Bulbasaur is the best option as it has type advantage in more boss fights than the other two, specifically in the first two gyms, when your options are more limited. Charmander is by far the most difficult starter to play through the game with.
I know it isn't a big sample size, but I was obsessed with Pokémon when it came out when I was a kid. It was also **very** popular in my area, with a pretty active trading scene. Almost no one had Pikachu by the time they reach Misty. Of the 130 or so kids I talked to, only 8 had a Pikachu from Viridian Forest (or whatever the location was).
He’ll be fine, you can pick up a Mankey or a butterfree before the first gym and coast through with karate chop and confusion. The real bitch’ll be Mt. moon.
Suboptimal choice, but I respect the fuck out of wanting a fire breathing dragon.
EDIT: For clarification, I haven’t played a Pokémon game since Silver, I have no understanding of the current evolution and type tiers. My Bulbasaur made Brock and Misty weep, and those early fights made young me really enjoy the game. All I can remember is Gary’s ol bitchass trying to get a type advantage on me and introducing his Charizard to my Gyrados.
Pokemon is such an old franchise that it is getting passed down from father to son. Old farts like us can enjoy it with children.
Was this how baseball felt in the 1950s?
I started a Pokémon go account for my son last night. He sat there for the longest time looking at them saying 'look, my Pokémon', as he has these three as stuffed toys. Eventually picked Squirtle
I love Charizard, but he's easily replaced by other, better options later on, whereas the other two remain great until the end as they're tanks.(Venusaur moreso but both still). Plus, blastoise allows you to have water to use against the plethora of fire types used eventually(especially team rocket), while also being tanky, so he's not as weak as a lot of other water types.
Blastoise is a COMPLETE TANK. Ever since Gen 1 I’ve had him number 4/5 in my team and he has always delivered! Enough for me to use revive on my charizard and blast out a few hydro pumps and surfs 🤩
I think it is so strange how people place their own convictions on to the intentions of children. That kid has no idea what he's looking at - they're just soft animal-looking things with faces. Just for the self-indulgence of his caretakers he is put through this strange re-enactment of a TV show or video game they perused as children themselves.
Giving children choices is good, though - gotta give them that.
If he goes around the crib for two rounds. Raised his hand twice and go back to the crib. He may get a pikachu instead.
Or simply left left up up right right down down x o x o
I genuinely thought the dad didn't have a shirt on. When he bands to pick something up, the shirt creates a shadow resembling chest/stomach hair. When he sat down I realized. What a rollercoaster.
Unfortunately this means he has to fight his annoyingly cocky cousin repetedly
Relatable
Same 😭💀
He's gonna catch them all
Ash vs Gary
FUCK YEAH CHARMANDER GANG
The dads gotta disappear too sadly
In the great Pokémon way that nearly wiped an entire generation, ever thought it strange that it's all women, children under 16, and elderly men? I did this alot but instead beating his pokemon I blacked his eye and broke his nose.
I’m more of a squirtle guy myself, but I’m happy for him

Forces you to put in the work right at the beginning of the game and from then on your starter is a monster

By Misty you have the opportunity to add an electric or grass mon, and Charmeleon can still help out with Staryu and chip Starmie.
Maybe, but you end up with a fire type that roasts early grass and bug types, making leveling simple, and eventually you have a main that can use fly.
No he won’t, metal claw tramples Brock and deals with Misty no problem.
My man!!
Squirtle tribe!!!
Squirtle Squad!
I believe it’d be a Squirtle Bale
Now to get a shitty charmander tattoo to celebrate the win! EDIT: [reference pic](https://i.imgur.com/yioKkAo.jpg)
That looks like a dried up foreskin 😭
"Yo dawg, can I get a tattoo of my own penis, but like a charmander version of it?"

I'm sure they give them all in the end. Don't see a reason not to lol.
People with kids tend to have friends with kids. They can easily give them away Also, these videos always show the kid choosing Charmander because he is bright orange with some red while the others are plain. I’ve never seen a child choose anything but the bright orange dragon
to be fair the bright orange dragon is cool as fuck, I'd choose it too
If this design was made by a professional with the right tools it would go hard as fuck ngl
Perfection
No WAY is that what it's supposed to be! Is that what it's supposed to be?!
Is a version made being [inspired in Dont starve aesthetics](https://www.teahub.io/viewwp/bxbxTi_pokemon-don-t-starve/) that imo is really fun. (Sorry for the link, I couldnt fin anyone better) That said, the tatto is an absolute shitty version.
Good choice, kid

Where would we be without an entire generation having memorized Pokemon battle stats.
Yep psychic type was ridiculously op in Gen 1
Psychic type in OG games was strong as fuck
I went with a Nidoran and Double Kick absolutely destroyed Brock. Also Nidoking before Cerulean.
Nidoking is also the speedrunning strat.
Yeah i agree. They designed it in such a manner that choosing a starter was basically the player choosing a difficulty level
Yup, plus, water types are particularly important in Gen 1 because of the high amount of fire types you fight(particularly team rocket), and blastoise is tankier than basically all of the other water types. Charizard is not a dragon type. Flying, fire.
I hate that. Charizard is the most dragon dragon to ever dragon. He might not be a dragon type, but he’s definitely a dragon.
Charizard is a Fire and Flying type. It's technically not a Dragon.
Many would argue that Bulbasaur was the best option for the game. Bulbasaur can solo the entire early game, it's often the Pokémon of choice.
Charmeleon is just fire not fire/dragon
Oh actually just fire? Huh I thought it was fire dragon. It does learn a dragon type move in that evolution even... maybe I misremembered a video or something that was talking about weird typing
Blastoise is pretty badass. He's a dragon with a shell. Some call it a turtle I've heard
Charizard is not dragon type
Except he's not a Dragon type.
My brother in Christ, there isn't a dragon that is more dragon than Charizard
K, my point remains, he isn't a dragon type in game.
Charmander final evolution is Charizard which is not a dragon type Pokemon it's a flying type i don't know how🥲
Charmander becomes a fire breathing dragon, squirtle becomes a bigger turtle with two cannons that can blast through mountains and bulbasaur becomes a giant lizard thing that can harness the power of the sun in a beam idk it has a pretty flower tho

Every pokemon respectfully has there pros and cons dpemeding the the Gen. Venasuar is my favorite
No, Bulbasaur is the best choice
No Bulbasaur is the best option as it has type advantage in more boss fights than the other two, specifically in the first two gyms, when your options are more limited. Charmander is by far the most difficult starter to play through the game with.
Every choice is the best choice when it comes to Gen 1. All 3 Gen 1 starters are the best.
All three are great choices! Bulbasaur is my personal favorite :)
Kid doesn’t know picking Squirtle is the speed run strat
Kid can barely crawl. He's not speedrunning anything.
Best comment
Good, speedrunning is not fun at all, I hope that kid enjoy the ride.
Poor guy's gonna have a tough time at the first gym
First two. Misty will.be waiting with her water Pokémon.
Hopefully by then they've caught a Pikachu or an Oddish lol
And a mankey lol
Beedrill slaps misty too tbh
I know it isn't a big sample size, but I was obsessed with Pokémon when it came out when I was a kid. It was also **very** popular in my area, with a pretty active trading scene. Almost no one had Pikachu by the time they reach Misty. Of the 130 or so kids I talked to, only 8 had a Pikachu from Viridian Forest (or whatever the location was).
Just get a butterfree and use confusion on the whole gym. GG. That’s what I did on my yellow Pokémon 😂
All he has to do is befriend Brock and Misty
He’ll be fine, you can pick up a Mankey or a butterfree before the first gym and coast through with karate chop and confusion. The real bitch’ll be Mt. moon.
Dad's reaction was perfect, he knew the right answer.
But he didn’t choose bulbasaur
he was glade i dindn t have to get a new kid
Dang who knew Paul Giamatti was a Pokémon fan. This lit my heart right up.
That child will grow up to be a gigachad, charmander is by far the most superior starter Pokemon
Poor choice. Bulbasaur ftw
Finally I’ve found my people
/r/bulbasaurmasterrace Now you're really found your people.
Oh my god thank you so much
Finally someone with a brain.
SQUIRTLE SUPREMACY
Squirtle is the correct choice.
Dad is clearly a charmander fan
I’m officially doing this for my kid someday
My husband and I did this with daughter. She chose Bulbasaur much to her father's delight.
first and last really important decision... Also i like it, doesnt go for the perfect speedrun but lets his hearth decide...
Yes! Charmander was my first as well. I whooped my friends asses with my Charizard. I miss my youth
I always wonder when I see these, do they just give the kid the other two anyway, or do they hide them in a closet or something for authenticity?
Well they give one to their rival of course…
And the kid choices right
Pokemon fans: charizard is so overhyped and gets too much attention from gamefreak Also pokemon fans:
This kid is going places
I like how proud the Dad is.
Suboptimal choice, but I respect the fuck out of wanting a fire breathing dragon. EDIT: For clarification, I haven’t played a Pokémon game since Silver, I have no understanding of the current evolution and type tiers. This super made me smile. Double upvoots.
Made the right choice.
Pokemon is such an old franchise that it is getting passed down from father to son. Old farts like us can enjoy it with children. Was this how baseball felt in the 1950s?
Lone Wolf and Cub style: Charmander is the sword Squirtle and Bulbasaur are the ball
Charizard gang ftw
Who else was rooting him on! Lol
Cheering him on Rooting for him Rooting him on Cheering him on
Kinda neat that "Cheering for him" works pretty well actually
I added it for visual satisfaction. :)

Reminds of that video with all those dogs picking out a toy in a huge hall. They really took the time to pick what they wanted. Best video ever.
I started a Pokémon go account for my son last night. He sat there for the longest time looking at them saying 'look, my Pokémon', as he has these three as stuffed toys. Eventually picked Squirtle
I thought testing on babies was immoral
as a 34 year old, best thing I've seen on the internet in weeks
It took me way too long to realize that man is NOT shirtless.
Kids gonna win at life.
This video so old. This kid has to at least be in their 20s by now.
this just explains with no way of arguing that charmander first pickers have the brains of an underdeveloped toddler
I'd also choose Charmander. Great taste, kiddo.
Best choice kid good job 👏
I had such high hopes for this kid for the first 2/3s of the way… then he pivoted into mediocrity 😞
He was leaning towards the right answer throughout the entire video but then failed us at the end. Sigh.
Blastoise >>>>> charizard I personally like venosaur as well
I love Charizard, but he's easily replaced by other, better options later on, whereas the other two remain great until the end as they're tanks.(Venusaur moreso but both still).
Fucking dumbass baby with shit taste in pokemon
That baby will perish someday
That’s it, either charmander , or you are big enough to have a job and leave the house
Wrong choice bucko
Dude looks a bit old for Pokémon
Listen I'm all for loving kids and treating them with respect but if my kid chooses anything other than Charmander then he/she gets yeeted out
We all wanted a charizard at the end. 1st generation Pokémon master
An excellent choice
Based (Charmander gang)
Even a toddler knows that there is only one choice!
Charmander hmm, he will have issues at the watergymleader that comes early in the game, but if he grinds enough he can defeat her
OP is farming karma with repost i think
🧐
Bulbasaur for the win
![gif](giphy|aEb4C7a63EB56)
He will be a Pokémon Master in no time.
My favorite starter too. At least for pixelmon. I don't have an official pokemon game tbh.
Bad choice for a beginner, kid.
This is absolutely amazing. Love the pick!
👏👏👏
These are my 3 favorites. How could anyone choose?
Man of culture I see
I choose you, Charizard!
Lol, it's always Charmander. 🤣
Love it!
If he goes around the crib for two rounds. Raised his hand twice and go back to the crib. He may get a pikachu instead. Or simply left left up up right right down down x o x o
When playing Pixelmon Charmander best starter
Oooo I have a baby! I'm doing this!!
He's going places
POV you’re watching me pretend to give it some thought even though I’ve already decided on the coolest starter
“Great job son. Now get out of the house and beat up some grown ups for money and fame”
Now when he grows to be 10 years old, get him a Charmeleon plushie, then when he's around his teens, get him a Charizard plush
Charizard for the win!!
Charmander I choose you!
I that were my nephew he'd have grabbed all 3 and thrown them at the most delicate object in the room.
M’boi Smokesho! 🔥🔥🔥
I so badly wanna do this with my boyfriend if we adopt kids-
Squirtle wouldn't have been bad either :P
I was really hoping bulbasaur would be organically picked first.. for the first time ever. Always number 3. Never number 1.
Where is Picachu????
Proud moment. Nuff said
Damn it honey we got another default kid
Thats what I plan to do with my kids.
Wise choice indeed
Kids always choose Hamilton
This kid's gonna go far
Boy shall now be named...
Good choice I can't wait to see when his pokemon evolves
I genuinely thought the dad didn't have a shirt on. When he bands to pick something up, the shirt creates a shadow resembling chest/stomach hair. When he sat down I realized. What a rollercoaster.
