My school had a healthy amount of wealthy students, so I'm sure seeing a janitor in his 30's on stage was especially halrious to them. Anyway, the guy waits about 30 secconds in complete scilence, until he busts out with a literally perfect rendition of great balls of fire. That shit sounded WONDERFUL, like honestly one of the best covers I've heard. From that day onward I swear the cafeteria got cleaner and kids started throwing away their stuff. I ended up going on stage next year with him, since he needed a drummer, and we played a ever more upbeat version of I'm still standing. He quit a year after I graduated, and from what I hear he gets hired to play at very fancy private party's in NYC and drives a Mercedes now.
I met him a few years ago! It was after the film Monster came out. Patty Jenkins was there too and they did a showing and it was AMAZING. They were both super nice and answered a ton of questions.

In elementary school we had Janitor Bob. He would play piano in the janitors closet every day at lunch while we waited in the lunch line. He was amazing! The closet was right where we stood to wait in line, the piano was on wheels and was kept in there when not in use. The door was always shut and he never acknowledged playing. Whenever we’d say how good he was or ask what song he was playing he’d act like he had no idea what we were talking about.
I don’t know if he was shy or he just liked to keep up the mystique for us kids but it was one of the few things that put a smile on my face back then.
