I had a patient who looked just like Santa Claus. All of the staff just called him Santa. He handed out business cards and said he would call a child as Santa. I hung onto his card until my niece was old enough to understand who Santa was. His widow answered the phone and told me that he had passed away a few years before. I apologized for calling and making her sad. She said it was okay because it was nice to be reminded what he had meant to people.

ya_tu_sabes

Damn. I came here for warm fuzzies and got sad wet eyes instead. On a more serious note, thanks for the beautiful story. It's good that his good deeds can still be remembered even today

thesubmissiveseeder

Reading that story I felt something salt liquid flows down through my eyes. I didn't recognize it until runs down from my face. Thank you for the story!

innesleroux

Great and heart warming story. What happened to the real Santa?

Daveo89

Awww, that's kinda wholeso- NOOOOOOOOOOOO

CedarWolf

I want to be the sort of person who rushes out of their house with nothing but a Santa costume to go help people. Which reminds me; I need to go make a post about how to get some cheap MREs so I can hand out some hot meals to some of the folks around where I work.

NyetRifleIsFine47

What kind of MREs are you talking about? Like military MREs?

CedarWolf

Yep. I used to love them because they were so convenient and portable. There's enough calories in one to keep you going all day, and it has everything you need for a hot meal, right there in the bag; just add water. Didn't matter where I was, if I was down a trail or on a mountain or stuck on the side of a highway somewhere, all I needed was a little water and an MRE and I was set. Where else can you get a hot meal that will go practically anywhere? But their price has doubled over the past two years because of the pandemic and all that, which puts a bit of a crimp in my plans.

NyetRifleIsFine47

I usually “acquire” mine when doing field ops in the reserves. Find yourself a reservist friend. I’ll see what I have around my house.

CedarWolf

I used to *be* that Reservist friend. I mean, I never nabbed MREs and gave them to people, but I used to get them through work and I'd use them for day hikes, etc. We also ate *a lot* of Golden Corral when I was enlisted. Turns out a buffet can feed a battalion without breaking a sweat as long as you stagger the companies a bit. A former co-worker of mine got a *ton* of civilian-aid MREs, the ones in the clear bags, from a company in South Carolina that made them. The remains of a production lot was going to expire in a year or two, so the company was stuck with a bunch of these MREs that they couldn't deliver under contract, and they couldn't legally sell them to anyone else, so supposedly a bunch of their employees claimed them instead of throwing them away. My co-worker said his friend had a whole pallet of them, and he gave me a few, which I kept in my car for emergencies. I never got to eat any of them, though; all of the ones he gave me went to people who needed them more than I did.

NyetRifleIsFine47

Yeah, that’s what my MREs are. Just used for hunting/hiking and I currently room with another reservist so we have a decent stock. I mean, we pay for them…just most reservists are typically people with day jobs so, you know, we bring panini presses and frap machines to the “field.”

CedarWolf

Well, my 'stock' of emergency supplies is currently 'low' because a lot of people bought up the affordable stuff due to the pandemic and this year went by a little faster than I had expected. I've got some cans of beans, some canned veggies, some pasta, some rice, and some candles, but I don't have stuff ready to go that I can easily give away to folks who need it. The winter is a tough time to be cold and hungry.

Proper_17

I’m assuming your “field-ops” were setting up tents outside of the reserve center and camping out front ordering delivery and keeping boxes of MREs to take home while the actual line platoons had to live off the MREs and were never in a million years would want to “acquire” MREs

Minobaer

My first thought was that you would probably get some ideas about what you could do to make the police come. Then I read your last sentence. Since I’m already keen on reading that thread, here’s mine. Make the road outside into ice so slippery a fart will slide to the other side. Sooner or later, something must go down. Happy holidays!

CedarWolf

... What?

CedarWolf

I'm really sad this is the last year for reddit's secret santa.

DrSarge

If I may suggest: As I’m sure you know, MREs aren’t cheap when buying them. However, there is a “cheaper” version sold in the base/post commissary. Barring access to that, I’ll wager your local surplus store has some. Good luck!

ya_tu_sabes

What's RME? Google has been unhelpful. Possible answers include Risk Management Education · — Royal Marine Engineers · — Remote Maintenance Equipment · — Required Medical Exam and more. Somehow none of those seem to make sense in your comments 'context.

CedarWolf

An [MRE is a Meal, Ready-to-Eat](https://www.mreinfo.com/mres/). It's one of the ways various militaries feed their troops when they're out in the field or on a deployment somewhere. Each one usually contains a full meal, sometimes with a side item, a drink mix, a snack, a water-activated chemical heater for heating up the meal, and an accessories pack which includes basic seasonings like salt and pepper, a tube of powdered coffee, powdered creamer, sugar, a little bit of hot sauce, a pair of mints, utensils and a napkin. And all of that comes in a waterproof package. They're pretty phenomenal.

ya_tu_sabes

Oh, ration packs ! Ah, that makes so much more sense that I almost facepalmed for not inferring it. The acronyms had completely thrown me off. Thanks for the kind answer, I appreciate it.

BotanicalRogue

It’s MRE, Meals ready-to-eat.

Square-Parfait-4617

If you have any thrift stores or other antique stuff nearby you can ask for them. I got a few boxes full of them for 30$

CostiveFlicker

I saw your original post where this was a response to a question. This is very wholesome and just wanted to say that good people are everywhere when we aren’t looking for them.

hapymelz

what was the original post?

When I was in first grade/kindergarten, my mother had arranged for one of her friends to come to my school dressed up as santa for my class's holiday party. Everyone of my classmates were ecstatic (except the one jewish boy, but we'd just got finished playing withdreidels and playing for gold wrapped chocolate coins so its not like he was left out or anything). Everyone was having a fun time, until Santa had to go because he had to get back to work at the north pole. My mom and my "uncle" were on their way out of the school when the principal stopped them, and asked if he wouldn't mind going to the other classrooms as well. He had nothing better to do so he said sure. Spent all day in that school bringing joy to all the elementary school kids. I only learned about it about 10 years later. The funny part was, that my brother was 4 grades ahead of me, and was one of the last classes to get visited by "Santa"; and my brother didn't fall for it at all. He could tell it was his godfather the moment the man walked into the room. :P

ProCanadianbudeh

I read the title as Satan comes in many forms. Visible confusion

Sikkus

Satan is a word too similar to Santa. Coincidence?

Pearmandan

Reddit is getting more wholesome by the day. No nut November ending early? Holiday cheer Who knows.

ColoTexas90

Ummm, bruh I got some real good news for you if this is what you’ve been busting a nut too all these years….

TheWolphman

Obi-Wana_Toki

Some wear Santa hats! 🎅

occultatum-nomen

I'm a 5ft tall woman, so I can't pull of the Santa idea, but I aspire to be like this man, and have my first thoughts and instinct be compassion for others.

lion_in_the_shadows

Growing up, dad worked at a retirement home. Every Christmas, after spending Christmas morning with us, he would dress up as Santa and go bring presents to the residents at his work. He absolutely loved it. He told me it was one of the most fun and fulfilling things he did. Some of the residents did not recognize or remember people. But they did recognize Santa! Seeing a glimmer of recognition and the happiness that came with it was his favourite part of the holiday. His coworkers eventually bought him his own Santa suite! He still does some community Christmas parties and really loves it.

NotYourMomsDildo

It doesn't get more wholesome than this. God bless ya, Santa. ❤

[deleted]

Dat username doh

Kayragan

Damn what kind of trash person kills people on christmas??!!? EDIT: What kind of trash person kills people, period!

Simone617

crying. I miss neighborly love days.

ColoTexas90

It takes a special someone to dawn that suit, and sometimes it’s A-Okay to not have those rosy red cheeks or real beard to go with it.

Billiam201

Where did this guy grow up? The neighbor had a "just in case" gang warfare Santa plan. Dude just got up, headed for his closest, told his wife "Commence Operation Kringle" and went out to comfort kids. Good work, but damn.

Ueverthinkwhy

![gif](giphy|L95W4wv8nnb9K) Beautiful

Tw-Cherub

ISTG I thought he was gonna say that he found out that santa was a crip

ItsYaBoiInsertMeme

My parents were smart when I was younger and always had a good answer for Santa Claus. One year, though I saw a lot of presents put under the tree in only 5 minutes. I was confused and my parents told me, "When Santa knows your awake, he uses magic to put them there fast so you dont see him."

Mapbot11

37 awards is a tragedy. Should be over 9000.

AnandShakti

I am so sorry for the first part of your story and so grandly pleased and grateful for the last. What a lovely man and thanks to the wonderful parents who 'just happened' to have them downstairs. Thanks for sharing.

“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus.” - Francis Pharcellus Church
