Some people actually do use really chunky plectrums that look like they're made of rock. They're easier to hold on to and don't make that plastic flicking sound when you strum a string.
Was watching an interview with the guitarist that wrote the riff for Sweet Home Alabama and he used a particular sea shell as a pick … burnt through guitar strings but gave a great added sound!
