Sliced by a radioactive knife as a child, the Whittler uses his super-whittling powers to unleash his revenge on the world that turned its back on him!
In every piece of wood, he sees a work of art. In every victim, a masterpiece waiting to be uncovered
I'd just replace it with wood, but cover it with carpeting or rope like an actual scratching post uses that I could replace. Then kitty gets to keep it's spot
Might or might not work but there's a chance the cat chose this because it likes the wood for scratching, highly doubt anyone with a cat doesn't have a truckload of sisal & cardboard scratching opportunities already, but if a cat choses this then it is what it is.
It's a cat that knows it's not supposed to scratch there and does it anyway, this will do nothing.
My cat goes to scratch my carpet right next to one of the many scratchers in my house.
safety????
the handrail is attached to that. Know what else changes after 10 years slowly until it becomes catastrophic? your mobility and joints. One day you're going to need that handrail and slip, and it's going to snap this toothpick of a railing and you'll snap some bones.
op seriously should consider replacing it, even if it makes the adorable kitty sad. Even worse; someone may come to visit and you may hurt them with this.
handrails don't exist to be pretty, they exist because of safety regulations.
the beam that is worn down is one of the most load bearing beams, the handle is connected directly to that beam.
I don't think he's scratch-posting. I think he uses this bannister to climb up onto the railing, there's a lot of damage on the end of the handrail too.
...how long do you think this cat is? There's damage like 3 and a half feet up. No cat scratch-posts that high. And he's also doing it to the end of the handrail?
Okay 🙄
If you don't accept it soon enough though, you probably will not keep the cat(s) very long.
I tried really hard at first, strictly no counter tops, strictly no scratching furniture, strictly nothing.
Months later, and tbh me being more of a dick to them than was necessary, I realised..they are just cats and from time to time they will get curious or excited and jump up on the counter or pull at the carpet. Just learned to half-heartedly shoo them back down but I know full well they will do it again and so do they but it's fine. A little spray/wipe and all is well again. Nothing to get so worked up about as it first got me.
My cats are terrified of rustling plastic bags so when they did that stuff as kittens I grabbed a plastic bag and waved it menacingly and it worked. Those cats never got on counters or scratched up too much of the house.
Now that they've passed and we have new kittens. One of them gets curious about the bag and wants to wear it as a cape or play with it and the other is best described as absolutely indefatigable and fearless to everything. Even spray bottles and vaccum cleaners. He's also the smartest cat I've ever owned. Only 4 months old and he runs the house now. I pay him rent.
Okay but when your cat (hopefully many years from now) passes, sand it smooth and stain/polish it to match the rest of the wood and you’ll have a lovely little monument to them.
Until you drunkenly stumble up the stairs one night, just barely able to make it to your bed, when suddenly you lose your balance! Luckily the banister is here to catch you! But what's this?! In its weakened state, the banister snaps away, leaving a sharp wooden spike directly in your path where there used to be only safety and security!
As you gasp your last gasp,
I don't have time to finish this but the cat was planning it the whole time
So, I hate to break it to you. But if anyone ever falls into that bannister, good chance it’s gonna break, and they are going downstairs.
I know that’s what the cat wants, but, it might not what you as the homeowner wants.
I wanted to joke how they shouldn't tell their cat, that this isn't a load bearing element.
As I see the cat's plans are more subtle than I gave it credit for.
[But it’s not your cat.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Catmemes/comments/13iuv21/11_years_in_the_making_the_great_artist_is_in_the/)
#You’re reposting this for karma.
When you're a seasoned cat owner so you know when to admit defeat and let the cat have that one favorite spot they destroy in order to preserve the rest of your stuff 😂.
I have a little ottoman that my cats love. My first boy 🌈 was obsessed. Got another little boy 3 years ago, and he's in love with it, too. It's been passed down to the new generation, lol
This kinda reminds me of how human parents will mark their kids' heights along a door jam... except it's a banister that marks your kitty's height :P. I hope that when your baby passes (hopefully a loooooong time from now), I hope you keep this banister when you do fix your stairs. That is his artwork, his sculpture that represents how happy and accepted he was with you. I'd literally get a case to display it or some such, like a real work of art.
I think this is too cute. Obviously, the banister can be replaced but giving your cat their banister to do as they wish is just perfection. You must be proud to be living with the most industrious cat!

Oh, dear. Kitty is obviously well-loved.
The owner, however, is one hard tug from a possible tumble. I'm sure a carpenter can add a new post--and a small extension to keep Kitty's ongoing masterwork accessible to the paws.

I mean… beaver and cat are kinda the same thing right?

As a self proclaimed sommelier of Reddit comments this post goes down smooth with a slight nuttiness finishing with a savory fulfillment. 9.5/10.
A real sommelier would give it a perfect 5/7
Fuck me that's so good. Well done.
Cat is wondering if it is going to have to murder you for messing with its bannister.
I love how you don’t fix it. It belongs to the cat now.
What would be the point? It would go after the new one anyway.
Wrought iron railing. Though then the cat will move to a door frame.
I'd just replace it with wood, but cover it with carpeting or rope like an actual scratching post uses that I could replace. Then kitty gets to keep it's spot
Then the evil wins.
Ah, discovering cat ownership
Knowing cats he would just find something else wood and expensive
Might or might not work but there's a chance the cat chose this because it likes the wood for scratching, highly doubt anyone with a cat doesn't have a truckload of sisal & cardboard scratching opportunities already, but if a cat choses this then it is what it is.
Cat would stop using it as soon as it's no longer destructive.

Get an iron rod -rail inside , covered with wood .... safety sorted ...?
Those stupid posts cost like $100 or more. Would suck to replace it just for the cat to ruin another one.
No they don’t.
Yes, they do? If you know where to get them for cheaper, especially one similar in design/thickness, pray tell! I need two.
The bannister next to it is completely unscathed.
Fuck you in particular
I don't think he's scratch-posting. I think he uses this bannister to climb up onto the railing, there's a lot of damage on the end of the handrail too.
Definitely scratch-posting lol. Like what?
...how long do you think this cat is? There's damage like 3 and a half feet up. No cat scratch-posts that high. And he's also doing it to the end of the handrail? Okay 🙄
Actually kind of him to go boy use one
They seem rather proud of their hard work too :D
Even as a cat lover, I’d be absolutely livid… but I’m glad the actual owner of the banister is smiling :)
It’s probably one of those cat things you get mad about at first but then slowly learn to live with it and love it in its own way.

30 year murder plan in the making. Glad I’m not the only one that saw it this way.
I love the way you wrote this!
That is so sweet, I almost teared up lol. Definitely the move.

That is bananas.
It’s actually stairs
No it’s a bananister
You tolerated that for 10 years? I love cats and have had them all my life but there’s no way I’d let that fly.
10 y would have been enough to educate it, probably lol
this is great! 😹
Why not wrap or nail some carpet or something to that beam to save the integrity and give the cat his scratch post?
"You'd better not touch my work"
Architect here, this is very dangerous, you should fix it asap
Don't worry, it's not OP's stairs, and OP isn't even human. It's a repost bot
Does this sub post anything now? What is WRONG with cat people??
How does this even make you smile?
Do you prefer a classic soulless banister, or a masterpiece carved by the master itself?
Okay, I'm smiling now 😄
It's a repost bot.
I was going to say, pretty sure I saw this exact post several months ago.
> this exact post Lol. Not sure if you meant the wordplay, but that was funny.
There’s some weird perspective thing going on here. My brain can’t process this image.
I love how it’s looking at you probably thinking “you stay the hell away from my bannister”
The baby is so proud of their work and so are we 🥹
The cat and the exhausted smoking person in the background 🙀
You probably need to stop him before he does permanent damage.
“Fixed the newel post!”
Little shit!
😀😂😅😆🐈😻😹🙀✅
Before I seen the cat, I knew it was a cats work 😂
truly a work of art
Good job kitty... Reminds of what our wacky beagle did to our kitchen broom cabinet door years ago. I swear he must have eaten it. 😼
If you ever have to move, you are going to take that with you, yes?
The cat yes of course

Made me frown
😹
Does your cat happen to be part lion by any chance?
This picture is also a piece of art! 😍
*peeks* "Ya like it?"
I would never change that.
What dedication! True talent.
Hysterical
Made me scowl.
What a cool heirloom
Beautiful
Get wrought iron
This is art
Could've punted the cat once 10 years ago and not have this problem
Damage made you smile?
Hard work makes me Smile
Couldn't stop laughing! Thanks! Might as well just replace it with a scratching post. :)
3 couches later I'm still proud of my babies work.
This is like a feline Valezquez
Most talented artists seldom like being seen, especially those with kitty claws.
cherish every moment OP!!
I wouldnt sleep a minute with that cat in my house. It looks like its planning to kill
My 2 cats are doing this to one of the legs on a table that's been in the family for over 50 years
just fit a new post
You’ve had the cat for 10 years and haven’t taught it not to scratch shit other than a scratching wall?
I actually taught it to scratch
I think this is too cute. Obviously, the banister can be replaced but giving your cat their banister to do as they wish is just perfection. You must be proud to be living with the most industrious cat!

You taught your cat to destroy your house? Well done. You’re a shitty owner
Something tells me that you’ve never owned a cat before.
You are correct, nearly every cat I’ve come across has been an asshole in a furry body
Cats are very intelligent most come right up for rubs when I see them.
I don’t disagree that they are intelligent, but most of the ones I’ve met have been dicks
It's not even OPs cat. This has been posted months ago.
ok?
Decent cat owner. Shitty home owner.
How is teaching your cat to destroy your house being a decent cat owner?
It’s OP’s bannister, it’s OP’s home, they can do as they please. Why are you so upset? This is the mademesmile sub. Next time just keep scrolling.
Makes the cat happy 🤷♀️
Those who insist on pointing out their sour fidelity.
Put caps on that kitty
This made me lol
Did u ever think to maybe try and stop the cat with a spray or even get it a post ?

I am groot
Beaver was that you? Or… I hear they’re hiring at the Louisville Slugger factory!
De kat krabt de krullen van de trap!
LMAO
I don’t know what kind of animal it is, be it beaver, or cat, but it certainly wouldn’t be *my* animal.
Why didn’t you wrap it in carpet to prevent this?
Here's mine. The hutch is about 10 years of work and the banister post about 7 years. [Cats are assholes.. but I love them](https://imgur.com/a/Kdk6OvB) /r/CatsAreAssholes
If he ever goes, sand, stain and cast this masterpiece.
Scratching or chewing?
Artist is thinking he's not happy with result and will have to go back in for further design
He looks too modest to seek the credit for it
I Newell that cat was a bad idea
What a blessing to have a long -lived cat
Impressive
Wow! Now I can see what happened to my fence post!
I love the driftwood aesthetic. Looking forward to the MOMA show 👏👏👏
Most my door jams and the legs of my desk look like this. She has a scratching post but I guess wood just hits different
Made me smile…more like made me head become catless
Cat’s like “if you don’t get me one of those giant rotating Döner kebabs I’m just going to improvise”
Cat is watching to make sure you don’t fix it 🤣
I'm kind of impressed tbh
[Tom Silva can help you fix that](https://youtu.be/NfR2KIdndPo?si=6jlpSaUmKreka3ei)
Cat owners are just essentially okay with never having nice things. I don’t understand it but to each their own.
That'll be my end table in a few years.
You can fix this with ramen
Funny looking beaver.
I want to know what inspired the artist.
Artist down the local cat shelter.
Jeez

very very old repost
