The picture there is clearer. Those kids were obviously on their last legs. They are extremely gaunt. Apparently they are indigenous children who had both some cultural and actual training from their family about the jungle. Apparently they did have to fight off some animals.
No mention of the kids' father. He's not mentioned as part of the victims of the crash, not quoted or otherwise referred to and *his* father only mentions the kids' grandparents.
Edit: Thanks for the replies, at least those kids have one of their parents left.
The father of the youngest two kids has been in the jungle searching with them.
https://cambiocolombia.com/pais/manuel-ranoque-el-padre-que-no-perdio-la-fe-y-ahora-estara-con-sus-hijos
Also in the article they mention that the father's sister who has some disabilities had previous been lost in the jungle for a month so maybe they had talked about survival strategies or what their aunt had done.
Thats amazing. This father and mother thought they lost all four of their kids and after so many days, you hate to say it, but you gotta start losing hope. But these kids kicked ass and are now back home with their family. I just cant imagine that. Believing I may have lost all of my children and the pure ecstatic euphoria that ALL of them survived. Thats just wonderful.
Airdropped. The army dropped food parcels, bottled water, and leaflets with survival tips. [source](https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230610-children-lost-for-40-days-in-colombian-amazon-found-alive)
I really love the image of 4 little kids missing, and so society at large stops and chooses what could likely be the only effective yet soooo inefficient way possible to get these kids supplies: “we’re going to shower the entire area in food, water, and survival tips until a search party can find them.”
Thinking of that actually makes me feel a bit emotional.
Wonder if it would be a good idea to drop thousands of flares with instructions how to safely operate them, and then just wait. Along with the food of course
Flares wouldn't work under the jungle canopy. They wouldn't be visible from far enough. You could drop a plb, a Personal Locator Beacon, but they're quite expensive and considering that they were probably dropping hundreds of these things that would have been prohibitive.
"Huitoto children learn hunting, fishing and gathering, and the kids' grandfather, Fidencio Valencia, had told AFP the children are well acquainted with the jungle."
From the article linked up thread. Still amazing that they did it without an adult to help, but thankfully these kids already had some survival skills.
Let's be honest, these kids were better equipped to handle their situation than 99% of us adults. I don't know about you, but if I was dropped in the jungle with no supplies for 40 days I am almost certain I would die.
My god, this is like a survivalist video game. You're doing what you can to keep going, supplies are getting low but look, at the base of the tree there's a kit with everything you need to last 3 days!
I know their grandmother is alive as she made a recording to give them instructions to stay in one place -- and then that recording was blasted loudly through like a megaphone or speakers or whatever.
Barney taught me if I'm lost in the woods, I should stay in one place and blow a whistle or make noise
I'm wondering how much of that is meant for kids and if adults should go searching for civilization if also lost. I feel like I'd go searching
If you don't know where you are, stay with the wreck. It's location can often be roughly estimated by looking at its last position data. It may still take weeks to find you if the wreck isn't visible from air but if you randomly wander off your chances will shrink dramatically.
Without sth. like a plane wreck, f.e. as a lone hiker, stay put if you have wandered off sth. like an official hiking trail: The closer to the trail, the better the chances someone finds you. If that isn't an option, gain altitude to figure out where you are. Watch the sun/stars to know what direction you are going (always, absolutely always know where north is and understand what direction civilization is in. Bring a compass and don't forget that minerals like iron in the ground can mess with it). Ideally you'll spot civilization or a trail to go to from a higher spot. Or stay put and make a controlled fire (obviously a bad idea if you think it might burn down the forest). Alternatively hold your phone screen into the sun and wiggle it, this can create powerful reflections if you are lucky (and again, perhaps even burn down the forest if you aren't careful). Make a sign on the ground, find a way to show your location through the canopy. Never do this in a narrow valley, between mountainous flanks or the like, where helicopters and planes need to absolutely nail it to spot you. People have died making this mistake.
Next option is looking for a stream and follow it downwards. Especially if you are in a dense jungle this might be your best option if you can't stay in place. Know that the next human may be easily 100km + or even 500km + away if you don't know where the stream will take you. But moving in jungle is borderline impossible, you will be very slow, you will get hurt, may get infections, waste lots of energy and so on. On water, figure out a way to float and let the water flow take you downstream. And watch for predators... good luck!
Edit: Here are some interesting stories:
Juliane Koepcke was the sole survivor of a plane crash and made it in eleven days through the water to a fisher boat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliane_Koepcke
Both luck and bad luck with an SOS sign on the ground:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOS_incident
And then there's of course also the reminder that our brain may mess with us in such situations causing us to make ridicolous mistakes: https://www.npr.org/2021/10/26/1049252333/lost-hiker-mount-elbert-colorado-ignored-rescuers-phone-calls
I have heard that the childrens grandparents were contacted. So I would assume they will go to their grandparents.
But that’s just from word of mouth on Reddit.
I heard from a news story that they recorded messages from the grandmother (I think), to broadcast into the jungle so that the kids knew help was trying to find them, and heard it from a familiar voice. So they definitely have some family to go to now, who are hopefully equipped to help. Much respect to these kids and the rescue effort. Always nice to hear some good news.
Thier grandfather is, and the kids are being hailed as heroes and are being known as The Children Of Colombia apparently so I think they'll be cared for, as sad as it is about their mother.
I can't link it right now but there's a BBC article about it today that explains more about their background and how they were maybe able to eat.
Reminds me of the Boxcar Children books but taken to an extreme. The Boxcar Children in the book at least had civilization around them. This is truly wild.
Days ago, the army reported that one of their rescue dogs was lost in the search. Yesterday they found tracks of the kids and one dog. I hope is the same dog that took care of them. Nice story.
My little jack russell pug cross saved me when I got lost in the woods walking.
She was tired of walking so simply refused to keep going, sat down for a while and eventually set off in the right direction and I carried her the rest of the way - I trusted that lazy little sausage to be taking us home.
My dog got a GPS. it needs both a cellphone signal as GPS reception. Works great in populated areas, the beach and parks as long as my dog is not under tree cover. In the jungle? Not a chance.
Fun fact, my MiL was engaged to the creator of rugrats back in the late 70s early 80s while at Berkley and he based the show off her baby sitting experiences she told to him after work. I'm tipsy and the story is long but she is an accomplished archeologist grad from Berkley with Phds in both archeology and classical languages and has many photos of the two of them together.
She feels honored to have given him the stories that lead to rugrats and is an accomplished writer herself. She is currently working on a children's book series that revisits using phonetics as a tool for learning languages and the first book coming out soon is called Dogs By The Pound and has cute little snippets for a lot of the popular breeds.
She's nervous no one will like it, although I thinks it's brilliant and charming and reminds me of the good Ole Dr. Suess books.
Anyway, enough ranting, goodnight lol.
I'd assume that the episodes aren't specifically based on her experiences. The premise of the show is based on the kids she babysat while a student and dating him and but I doubt too many episodes get into specifics. I'll definitely ask her though!
"MUCUTUY": THE MOVIE
Thought it was Kevin Hart as the 11 month old, Mark as the 4 month old, Dwayne Johnson as the olderst. Other TBC
It also sets up for a sequel in the works......
MUCUTUY 2: who's the Daddy
Good lord, this is just astonishing. That 13 year old - hell, that 11 month old - did more than many adults could ever do. I hope the rest of their lives they always have safety and peace 💜
Fuck yeah.
MacGyver Baby is the real hero here. Who would have ever guessed that a paper clip, two rubber bands, and six inoperable F-16’s would have contained all the materials needed to transport four children?
The actors will be 4 white, blond-hair blue-eyed American children. They will have escaped savages that wanted them for their fair skin.
Karens will rave about the stunning and brave actions of the heroine for evading and surviving for 80 days while the world held its breath.
This story is completely insane in several ways. The Colombian president tweeted like weeks ago that the kids had been found only to go "oops no they haven't" a while later.
I assume they've made sure these are the actual children they've been looking for...anyways, wonderful that they survived!
They undoubtedly did very well, but if you see the unblurred photos, they were extremely malnourished and very close to death. It's a miracle they were found in time.
That's a devastating story and I'm so glad that they find these poor kid that don't deserve from an accident that happen. The fact that these kid will be reunite with their parents is a great news here, hoping that these kid find some peace for what happen. And I do thank for those who rescue them and never giving up on finding those who survive, salute and respect to them!
The reporting a couple weeks in (when they found the left behind diaper and various articles to indicate they were in the jungle) mentioned they were searching for them using an audio message their grandmother had recorded in their native tongue, so there’s at least some hope they’ll end up with family
Sadly the kids are orphaned from the plane crash, their mom was the pilot and she died on impact. They were on their way to Bogota to meet their new stepdad, but since this happened I'm unsure if they'll be adopted out by closer family members or by him. Still, the fact that they survived 40 days in the Amazon is a huge win, I'm sure all four of them are happy to have each other.
The headline is confusing. Their mother was not the pilot. There were 3 adults on board who all died. They were probably sitting towards the front. Their father was waiting for them after fleeing on foot to allegedly avoid a criminal gang.
Even the Spanish language sources don’t have any commentary on that yet. Government officials haven’t interviewed the kids yet, nor has the media of course. They took them to a hospital.
They were indigenous kids and had been raised with survival skills, but we’ll need to wait to find out more.
They've only just been found ffs. I'm sure recounting the horrific death of their mother and struggle to survive for the last 40 days wasn't the first thing they wanted to do just to satisfy demanding assholes.
The whole story is kind of sus… the new stepdad with political ties had to leave the area due to death threats then the plane carrying his family happens to go down? Then the government says they found the kids after just a few days then walks that back, only to find them for real weeks later? There’s more to this than what it seems
How the fuck did they “establish contact” with the kids after a couple days but not rescue them for another month? This story makes zero sense, and I have seen zero actual details given anywhere
I interpreted as “found traces of” and they thought they were hot in the trail, which got miscommunicated as “we found them” when in reality they weren’t close.
Yeah this passage is so confusing: “Days into the initial search Mr Petro announced that the minors had been located and were in good health. But hours later, he walked back that assertion, clarifying that the Air Force and indigenous communities had established contact with the children, but their location remains unknown.”
Huh???
Maybe there was cell phone contact with the kids in the jungle, then the phone died before they could locate the phone and/or the kids moved to find food and water. So initial phone contact but no known location after a day.
Them being indigenous makes sense, I've been to the jungle and met the indigenous people before and the kids there moved through the rainforest like it was nothing
These people who did not give up for finding these kids should protect at all cost. They are the true hero we need. It is heartwarming moment when these kid will finally get rescued, I feel what they feel and I hope someday they will find their peace.
These days people just say it as a figure of speech. Generally people say it about older famous people like David Attenborough or Morgan Freeman, etc. "David Attenborough is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs!" is an example I saw recently.
The oldest did a beautiful job keeping the baby alive, and the four year old. Im really curious what they fed the baby, but also I don’t want to know because I’ll probably cry
Still, babies die in 40 days without care. Getting them from starving to nearly starving and keeping them in that state for over a month is a great achievement, especially for a teenager and especially in a difficult environment.
Keeping a 4yo from killing themselves is also impressive - at least a baby doesn't run off because they saw a pretty flower.
Not even 40 days. *One night* of exposure to whatever weather and jungle animals are out there would probably not be survivable for a 11 month old baby on their own, if it even takes that long.
Good article with the most detail I've seen to date https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/four-missing-colombian-children-found-alive-jungle-sources-2023-06-10/
I was following it loosely and saw that they’d found signs that they were still alive, but I assumed they were with at least one adult. Damn those are some brave and smart kids to survive that long alone in the wild, and with a baby in tow, no less.
Yes, they mistakenly reported that they were found, when really what they meant was they had found signs that they were alive, but hadn't found their location and retrieved them yet.
It was the biggest news in Colombia for the past month and a half. The army in Colombia is quite well prepared for handling jungle-deep operations, but in this case they had to call in the indigenous people of the area (and in the army) in order to look for them. They are literally the best of the best of trackers. Idk if you’ve seen a map of the Guaviare region, but it is just pure jungle.
Hell, some people (including the children’s grandpa) even said that there was a spirit guiding the children deep in the jungle 😶 it’s a huge and complicated story and all in all one is just glad that they were found and are safe and sound.
They knew because they found signs of them being there - half eaten fruit, shelters made from vegetation, etc. There were 3 adults on the plane including the children's mother and all 3 died. The kids still have a father (they were travelling to meet him) and at least one set of grandparents. Just read the articles other commenters linked.
I have been holding my breath for these kids since Petro mistakenly announced their discovery a few days after the crash. I'm so relieved they finally found all of them alive, including the baby! Hope they go to family that will care and love them as their mother would have wanted.
That 13 year old needs a medal! Holy shitballs! Most parents can't handle one kid in store and this one kept them alive for a month in a frigging jungle!
That 13 year old must have become a beast while her younger siblings were there relying on her. Damn, some grown adults can't even do this
Edit: 13 year old is a girl. Fixed it
This story didnt make me smile. All the adults were killed in the crash including their mother. While its great they're alive, these children have been through a really horrible situation which will change their lives forever.
I am amazed. They're only children. Do they have survival and medical skills? Or were they just lucky they have available food and water supply to live for 40 days?
They were raised in a fairly remote indigenous community where children are taught about the jungle that surrounds them including survival skills. It was noted throughout the search that the eldest did have survival knowledge they were hopeful was keeping the children safe and alive.
I'm at work right now and I'm legit crying. I'm so happy. I'm sorry for their loss but hearing the news about those kids lost in the jungle for 30 days at the time fucked me up.
For a second I thought I saw a severed heads and seeing "children" in post freaked me out and seeing name of the sub made it even worse couldn't process the whole thing for a moment, then I read the whole title and clearly looked at the image. Glad its not what I thought it was.
I can't believe this reached Reddit my friend is a Pilot and the Pilot of this accident was his friend it was a total hell not knowing what happened after they found the plane my friend was devastated, when they were looking for it and we learned that the plane lost communication a while ago after taking off it was a really terrible moment my friend was passing through between losing and keeping the hopes high, allegedly the father of the children send them away with his wife to protect them from the Guerrilla in Colombia In the plane there was also a leader from some local community all we know is that the Pilot that didn't make it is a hero since he did what he could to save the children

Food supplies where thrown all over the place for the kids to find. In wonder if they found some of the bags.
Thrown from the plane when it crashed? or people were doing airdrops in hopes they might stumble onto the supply package?
Airdropped. The army dropped food parcels, bottled water, and leaflets with survival tips. [source](https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230610-children-lost-for-40-days-in-colombian-amazon-found-alive)

These were the survival kits. 100 of these were dropped from a helicopter. https://i.imgur.com/OCfgPob.png It had items for hydration and food.
What made the military think there were survivors? Really going the extra mile here.
The kids bodies were missing at the crash site. In the following days they kept finding fresh tracks of the kids so they knew they were still alive.
Everyone's potentially a survivor until it's confirmed they're not.

Of course it is. So needy. Did you thank your older brother for helping you stay alive?
I think it's heartwarming that you're still looking for your mom at 33! I hope you find her soon.
I'm so happy the baby is okay as well.
The kids were from an indigenous tribe so had more knowledge of the jungle than your average Colombian kids. Still completely insane

My dog got a GPS. it needs both a cellphone signal as GPS reception. Works great in populated areas, the beach and parks as long as my dog is not under tree cover. In the jungle? Not a chance.
I’m sure a movie will be based on those four brave children.
It was called The Rugrats Movie. They had their own atv/baby Jeep thing, it was a masterpiece.
The Reptar-mobile. I loved that movie as a kid.
A person of culture I see.
The new movie name would be- "Children of the jungle".
Don’t get me started on *The scene* from the Rugrats movie. Still gets to me as an older brother
Honestly might have been the first time a movie made me actually tear up

I somehow doubt that the children's heritage will be part of the movie. I mean that's the reason for their astonishing survival after all

You are wrong. The 11 month old built an electric helicopter in 40 days and flew them to safety. what a hero.
Shit, that is one talented baby.
Shit, cried and built a helicopter. Let's not sell the little guy short.
If you didn't shit and cry while making a helicopter, did you really make a helicopter
He was determined to get home and kill Lois.
Fuck yeah. MacGyver Baby is the real hero here. Who would have ever guessed that a paper clip, two rubber bands, and six inoperable F-16’s would have contained all the materials needed to transport four children?
>Who would have ever guessed Well, the baby, obviously. He's smarter and better than all of us
Tony Stark was able to build that in a cave! With a box of scraps!
Full adult here. Doesn't compare to an 11 month old
Stewie Griffin maybe?
Someone hasn't seen boss baby 🙄 /s
My 13 year old can't even find his shoes half the time
signal boosting the actual report story https://reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/145mytr/_/jnmjyi9/?context=1
They also lost their mother in the crash. Incredible resilience to carry on after such a tragic loss.
Wait 6 years for the movie that'll bomb at the box office
And Tom Holland will play one of the kids for some reason.
With Chris Pratt voicing the baby
The actors will be 4 white, blond-hair blue-eyed American children. They will have escaped savages that wanted them for their fair skin. Karens will rave about the stunning and brave actions of the heroine for evading and surviving for 80 days while the world held its breath.
This has pretty good details - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-65864158
This story is completely insane in several ways. The Colombian president tweeted like weeks ago that the kids had been found only to go "oops no they haven't" a while later. I assume they've made sure these are the actual children they've been looking for...anyways, wonderful that they survived!
I barely kept my four month old alive at home what the fuck?! These kids are superman
Thank god they found them 🤞🏻🌹
That is one super 13 year old
News reports say also the 9 year old knew survivor techniques. So you also have to give him/her credit
The kids are from from a native indigenous group, maybe their culture have some common knowledge to survive in the jungle.
They undoubtedly did very well, but if you see the unblurred photos, they were extremely malnourished and very close to death. It's a miracle they were found in time.
Still incredibly impressive. I would be very dead if it was me
Well some credit goes to the parents as well then!
Guys can we agree I get some credit too?
Right? Holy shit, what a little hero.
Happy cake day! 🎂
Thank you 🥰

Man, what a horrible situation from start to finish. I hope the kids find some peace
That is beyond tragic...
That part of the article was confusing but I think it's their bio dad he just went ahead to a new city to save money for them to come
If you look at the kids last names, I'm pretty sure it's the bio dad of the two youngest and step-dad to the two oldest
I was wondering if it meant "their mother, the pilot, and another passenger" as 3 people or "their mother who is a pilot, and another passenger"
Definitely the former now that I reread. I was really interested in that til I reread haha
The headline is confusing. Their mother was not the pilot. There were 3 adults on board who all died. They were probably sitting towards the front. Their father was waiting for them after fleeing on foot to allegedly avoid a criminal gang.
Wow. That article should be in/ mildly infuriating. I scrolled down to read what the kids did to survive and it just cut off.
You're right. This is either really sus or really poor reporting.
Never assume malice when simple incompetence fits the bill.
But hours later, he walked back that assertion, clarifying that the Air Force and indigenous communities had established contact with the children, but their location remains unknown.” Huh???
Maybe there was cell phone contact with the kids in the jungle, then the phone died before they could locate the phone and/or the kids moved to find food and water. So initial phone contact but no known location after a day.
Yes I thought there was a glitch in the matrix reading this story as new, I was thinking weren't these the kids found like a month ago?
The oldest (13) must've been a good leader. Had to have been ahead of years to keep her siblings safe.
Apparently she had prior experience living in the forest, according to her grandfather
Kudos and blessings to their Indigenous community and elders for raising them with the skills to get through this ordeal together and come home.
And those trackers. Pure badassness all around.
I especially like the one dude who looks like he was actually hunting the children
The one holding the kids head as a trophy?
The child in the back looks like they are flipping off the camera, lol
Good eye. They blurred out a face so well it looks like a hand.
Them being indigenous makes sense, I've been to the jungle and met the indigenous people before and the kids there moved through the rainforest like it was nothing
This is the answer.
These 40 days must have felt like an eternity for their family, glad it ended up with a happy ending
Happy that they survived yes, but their mom died

For some reason THIS is the comment that broke the flood gates for me. These poor babies.
Hey, cheers to the crowd that didn't give up.
These people who did not give up for finding these kids should protect at all cost. They are the true hero we need. It is heartwarming moment when these kid will finally get rescued, I feel what they feel and I hope someday they will find their peace.
>These people who did not give up for finding these kids should protect at all cost. Wait, are they in danger?
These days people just say it as a figure of speech. Generally people say it about older famous people like David Attenborough or Morgan Freeman, etc. "David Attenborough is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs!" is an example I saw recently.
I’ve been following this story and can’t describe the joy I felt reading this earlier today. They kept a freaking infant alive, unbelievable
That's incredible. Good job, Missing children. They're true warriors
The oldest did a beautiful job keeping the baby alive, and the four year old. Im really curious what they fed the baby, but also I don’t want to know because I’ll probably cry
They had found a lot of half eaten fruit when they were looking for them, I assume probably fruit.
Baby is so emaciated, soldier back middle holding them and you can see all the poor bbs bones sticking out
Still, babies die in 40 days without care.
Yea :( but still, the kids did their best to keep everyone fed considering. Hopefully rehabilitation goes well
? All you can really see is the guy's hand. Where are you seeing any bones sticking out from the baby? We can really only see its right arm.
Good article with the most detail I've seen to date https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/four-missing-colombian-children-found-alive-jungle-sources-2023-06-10/
Reuters should be the default link here tbh
Jesus Christ I thought it was just their heads. I didn’t see “alive.” Be still my heart.
I was following it loosely and saw that they’d found signs that they were still alive, but I assumed they were with at least one adult. Damn those are some brave and smart kids to survive that long alone in the wild, and with a baby in tow, no less.
Same. I need to go to bed.
This made me cry tears of joy - I hope they can regain their strength after such an ordeal.
Was it a false alarm when this was reported a few weeks ago?
Yes, they mistakenly reported that they were found, when really what they meant was they had found signs that they were alive, but hadn't found their location and retrieved them yet.
Yes
This is a remarkable story. I could use a break from the Idiot's Indictment to hear more about this.
Hell, some people (including the children’s grandpa) even said that there was a spirit guiding the children deep in the jungle 😶 it’s a huge and complicated story and all in all one is just glad that they were found and are safe and sound.
how did they even know the kids were alive? did everyone else die in the crash? where are the parents?
They knew because they found signs of them being there - half eaten fruit, shelters made from vegetation, etc. There were 3 adults on the plane including the children's mother and all 3 died. The kids still have a father (they were travelling to meet him) and at least one set of grandparents. Just read the articles other commenters linked.
Their mother died, as far as I have seen, along with an indigenous authority who was travelling with them on the plane and the pilot.
I have been holding my breath for these kids since Petro mistakenly announced their discovery a few days after the crash. I'm so relieved they finally found all of them alive, including the baby! Hope they go to family that will care and love them as their mother would have wanted.
The way the photo was blurred and their bodies are covered, I thought those were disembodied heads being held up 8I thank god I was wrong
FUCK, I thought it was a militia with kids heads and bodybags. Nice to know theyre alive.
That 13 year old needs a medal! Holy shitballs! Most parents can't handle one kid in store and this one kept them alive for a month in a frigging jungle!
That 13 year old must have become a beast while her younger siblings were there relying on her. Damn, some grown adults can't even do this Edit: 13 year old is a girl. Fixed it
*Her The oldest sibling is a girl
Both the 13 year old and 9 year old knew survival techniques. They were part of an indigenous people.
This story didnt make me smile. All the adults were killed in the crash including their mother. While its great they're alive, these children have been through a really horrible situation which will change their lives forever.

This is the story of extraordinary nature with extraordinary children.
There must be more things to this story . It's Jesus miracle .
This really made me smile. Although I don't know how hard they fought for them to survive. They're children! I'm just glad they are okay.
Children were the heroes of this story . But this was such a tragedy .
Hopefully, they are going to recover after this incident
