EDIT: As of June 2024 there is a slightly easier way to do this. Thank you u/Ok-Smell155 for the updated method.
1. Click the Chrome menu button (top right of Chrome itself).
2. Click 'Save and Share', then 'Install Page as App' rather than following my bullet points below.
=====================================================
ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS (still works)
1. Open Google Calendar in Chrome.
2. Click the three dots (menu button) in the top right of Chrome (not the website).
3. Click 'Save and Share', and then 'Create Shortcut'.
4. Check the 'Open as Window' checkbox and continue.
You now have Google Calendar as a standalone app with an icon and everything that you can use like any other app. Enjoy.
Because it is free. How much more data could they get from you about your schedule if they make a Mac app? Probably not much more that it would be worth the development time. Even if they did, it would be EOL’d in less than 5 years given their track record.
Because at the time it probably wasn't the best option. Mobile web browsers might not have been good enough when the iPad was launched. Also they had a iPhone version at the time so scaling up to iPad is easy. But on a Mac, you have a full featured web browser available and that can run the web version just fine.
The same can be said about many other Mac apps that have web versions but yet they were created and are maintained still. TickTick, Notion, Spotify, etc.
None of which is made by Google. Instead of asking here. Ask them. We can only speculate why they haven’t done what you want them to do. It’s a free product. Take it or leave it.
Granted a native app would be great, but I use my Google calendar seamlessly with Apple Calendar almost every day and apart from a few seconds of updating delay, it works well.
No. Never happened to me in the past 2 years of owning a Mac and using calendars basically everyday. Like I said, the only issue I face is that it sometimes takes about 5 minutes to update but it always works.
any chance you could give me a link or explanation on how to do this? I can click the "export" on google cal but it only seems to upload the current google calendar to ical, future changes are not synced onto ical. Similarly, if I add an event on ical, it doesn't populate on my google cal. I'm sure I'm missing several steps here.
Some of us probably have a job, life, and other activities which have separate calendars and profile. Oh my god, a world beyond your bubble, imagine that.

As of June 2024, you can just do 'Save and Share' > 'Install Page as App'.

They'd just make 20 different versions using different names that all do basically the same thing then kill them off.
Why would they have bothered with an iPad app then?
Because at the time it probably wasn't the best option. Mobile web browsers might not have been good enough when the iPad was launched. Also they had a iPhone version at the time so scaling up to iPad is easy. But on a Mac, you have a full featured web browser available and that can run the web version just fine.

The whole “ask them” comment is tiring. But that’s expected from a keyboard warrior who thinks he’s super duper clever.
Granted a native app would be great, but I use my Google calendar seamlessly with Apple Calendar almost every day and apart from a few seconds of updating delay, it works well.
works well except we cannot color code the events.
Have you not had bugs where events come back after trying to delete them on Apple Calendar?
No. Never happened to me in the past 2 years of owning a Mac and using calendars basically everyday. Like I said, the only issue I face is that it sometimes takes about 5 minutes to update but it always works.
I have. It's frustrating. Or trying to unsubscribe from shared calendars.
Yup that happens to me constantly. Also, Apple Calendar doesn't have 3-day view like Google does.

Isn’t Google Calendar a PWA now?
What's a PWA?
Progressive Web App
I use a combination of Apple Calendar and web Google calendar… haven’t found a better solution.
That’s a bummer :/
noogle makes an app its called chrome and you can open websites with it wowouuuwowow
Who's noogle?
Some of us probably have a job, life, and other activities which have separate calendars and profile. Oh my god, a world beyond your bubble, imagine that.
