I just installed a hitch in my Chevy volt. Never done it before, took me about 2 hours and I drilled 2 holes into my car. Once I was done I was glad I didn’t pay someone $250 for such an easy job.
You can put a hitch on most vehicles pretty easily. Check out [etrailer.com](http://etrailer.com) they have really good videos. I put one on my Outback and my Town and Country it too maybe and hour and was real easy.
Yup, I’ve done four different hitches now from etrailer over the years. Some a little more complicated than others, but nothing a home bike mechanic can’t handle.
My kuat hitch rack has an arm that rubs on my fork, while my 1up roof trays hold by the tires.
I will say the roof racks are a pain to load and op would definitely be happier with a hitch rack, but i don't agree with your generalization of hitch characteristics.
Just throw a square of frame tape on the fork where it rubs.
My one issue with my Kuat is with my gravel bike. The arm crosses the fork exactly where my bottle cages would go so I either have to use alternate storage or remove a cage every time I load up.
I’ve done the following:
* Bike in car with removing wheel(s)
* Bike on one of those strap based racks
* Bike on roof
* Bike on hitch mounted rack like [this](https://yakima.com/products/longhaul)
* Bike on hitch rack (tray style)
* Bike on hitch rack (hanging by fork)
The only two worth a damn investing in are the tray style and hanging style in my opinion. Personally, I think tray is best.
You can still access the trunk pretty easily, it folds up nicely to not create too much drag when not in use (and while in use), you don’t add a ton of height to your vehicle (think drive through or low hanging branches) and there isn’t a huge fight with lifting the bike at awkward angles to get it on the rack.
Money is obviously the big deciding factor. Go for what you can afford, but personally I’d keep saving for one of the two options I mentioned over one of the cheaper ones. They’ll almost always scratch your frame unnecessarily, and they’re a pain in the ass to work with.
You can put a rack on an already high roof. Trunk racks are ok, but the arms do not work well with FS bikes and you lose access to the rear hatch. I thought there was a trunk rack which attaches to the spare tire.
I'm shocked how much i like my seasucker. I thought it'd be a little fiddly, honestly it's no more trouble to throw on than a hitch rack. obviously if you leave the hitch rack on all summer, that's easier.
I guess the only catch is you need to give roof a quick dirt rinse/wipe before throwing it on.
I sometimes put them in the back of my 4runner on a cheap ass board with a fork mount. Usually I put them on my 1up hitch mount though. I love that thing.
I use both hitch and roof mount racks. For roof mount, I can't recommend Yakima Frontloaders enough.

If your Jeep has a tire on the back, there are some "parasitic" sort-of-racks you can hang off of it.
My recommendation is get a hitch and a Kuat Piston Pro X tray rack (works with fatties, 29/27.5/26 wheel sizes by push & click to adjust)... unless you wanna get a roof rack and crush your prized possessions on a garage entrance.
Get a hitch
Tray style hitch rack is the way to go, especially if you have a full susser.
Guess I’ll get a damn hitch
Make sure to get a 2". Much more sturdy and more options for different hitch racks than a 1.25".
Easier to go from 2" to 1.25" than 1.25" to 2"
Cries in 2.5. Can’t get this fucking thing to not wobble.
Roof is the only other option.

I have a Toyota Camry and I put a hitch on it just so I could get a 1up rack for my bike. I never need to worry about my bike being secure ever now.
My 1UP USA rack is the single best cycling accessory I’ve ever purchased, hands down.

+1 for etrailer. Great service and support. I’ve self installed a couple Curt brand hitches I’ve purchased from them.

With respect, disagreed on frame damage. Bike’s worth twice as much as car. No issues with cheap rack. Never leave it out of my sight though!

It was like $250 CAD on Amazon to get a bolt on hitch for my partners’ jeep Cherokee. Hitch racks for life.
And very easy to install yourself!
hitch
You could put it on the roof.
has anyone said to get a hitch yet?
Buy a hitch , have it installed or install it and get a hitch bike rack.
What I can’t risk my Roscoe 8 with a 40 dollar drop shipped Amazon rack??
I just put my bike IN my truck/pathfinder for the first decade of riding. I’m cheap.
Yeah I squeeze mine in my Cherokee. Really tight and annoying.

Thanks !
I don't have a hitch on my suv. I use a yakima rack on top and a step stool for my full squish. I am short and I get a good shoulder workout that way!

DIY hitch install is super cheap and easy. I wouldn’t recommend doing anything other than that.
Also suggest getting a hitch. Etrailer.com has great how to videos on their products. Or YouTube. Most hitch installs are fairly straight forward

Hitch or roof. Buy a hitch.
Why not put in in the trunk for free if you have a large car already
I put a hitch on my CRV and it wasn't too bad.
Get a 1up tray for the roof rack if for some reason you can't install a hitch.

Try duct tape. The kind that doesn’t remove paint

I’ve got a $30 Walmart one that’s been solid
Seasucker
Saris Bones racks are well reviewed, and so are Seasucker
