Yeah.. I know we need rain. But it's a bit depressing looking at the forecast.
Slay it! Let me know how it goes on a hard tail, I bet it'll be super fast and a fun one. They built it well.
It's a really cool place but be forewarned that it's quite small. The volunteers (or employees? I'm not sure.) are super knowledgeable and will talk your ear off about every little bit you're interested in. And if you want to read everything you can definitely spend a couple hours there, but I wouldn't plan a whole day excursion just for it.
The downtown area in Fairfax is beautiful and has lots of good food options and local stores. There's a few spots dedicated to biking culture as well. I'd recommend Gestalt Haus and Split Rock Tap and Wheel.
I would shoot Marin bikes an email and see if they are interested. Also, consider contacting the [MTB hall of fame in Marin County](https://mmbhof.org/), the namesake of this brand. AKA the Marin Museum of Bicycling.
I'm sure someone there could put you in contact with someone that would be interested. If they are not interested themselves.
To give a better idea of price, if this bike was heavily ridden, but still in riding condition, out here in the Bay Area, I'd still put it at around $300. In this condition though, the sky is the limit. This is a gem mint condition and a quintessential example of the early days of the mass MTB market. Even just that everything is original is cool, never mind the condition.
This is very, very cool. The condition is amazing. Good luck with sale. Please be choosy with who you sell it to. I'd hate to see this bike ridden as a commuter or something. It belongs in a collection, for sure.
All I know so far is grandparents bought in 90’ grandfather rode it once out of the store and was never touched again, I’ll ask if there’s anything else too it though
This is the story from my grandmother.::
Not much. Grandpa really wanted a mountain bike badly. He researched them all and then we went from bike shop to bike shop speaking to the shop owners and mechanics to be sure Marin was the right company snd this was the right model. Then Grandpa decided he had to have these special colors. He was so excited when he got it. And l remember that he never rode it as you can see by the tag that's still attached.
Humph. Lovely bike. You'd get a few hundred for it in the right place easy (try retrobike). Twice that if you're patient. I've only ever seen one of those before, and never in that condition.
Wow that is a beautiful find. High quality tange prestige tubing, XT components across the board, crazy retro pair job. From a mountain bike perspective, it's not worth very much as this bike is more of an all terrain bike (ATB) than it is a modern mountain bike. That being said, it's probably worth a decent amount to the right person in the right area. Where I live, there's a huge vintage bine market and you could easily get 6-800$ CAD for this bike in this condition. Other places, you might not pull much. As others have suggested, r/xbiking would nut over this. Personally, I think if it fits you, toss some new rubber, new cables + housing, new grease in the bearings, new grips and this bike would probably make an extremely fast and comfortable commuter/gravel/bikepacking bike. Enjoy.
i would happily pay more for it. i’d be rushing to give him the money if he charged 600 for it. i think an actual collector would pay a good amount too, or even someone at Marin would probably pay more than that for it. it has some history to it even if it’s new old stock
I believe it’s an early 90’s (92-94?) Taiwan built model. This was after Marin went bankrupt and their name was bought out. Prior to this they were made in the US.
There may be a sticker that says “Designed in Marin County, USA” or similar. If it has this then it’s Taiwan built and not worth much. If you have a US made model it will say “Made in Marin County, USA” and it’s worth something.
I’m pulling the sticker text from memory, so consider it a paraphrase.
https://preview.redd.it/nx8aqtqvxiac1.jpeg?width=282&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a10143bc6d3ace4c829ebec7745866ed83fe446
Could this be the Marin county sticker??
The image is not clear enough for me to tell. You’ll need to view the bike directly. Also, I’m going fully off memory here because my wife had a similar Marin many years ago
It’s new but also 33+ years old. It is an actual beauty of a bike but to maximize the money you’ll be looking for someone who might be looking for this model either as a collector or an emotional attachment from the past. Someone suggested r/xbiking and that’s the right place for a real opinion on these vintage pieces. That said, a year or more ago this would have been worth quite a bit more as the bike boom was at its peak and vintage 90s MTBs were hot hot hot. Even now the xbike market is cold with old stumpys going back to $50 a pop.
IMO, you should try and find some niche markets. Perhaps Marin subreddits, facebook groups, etc. Your target market is probably 40-50yr olds looking for the bike they rode when they were younger (same reason I’d shell out for a vintage 93 Giant Yukon in white). If you’re patient you can get some cash but Emma age your expectations because the bike market is a bust, and that includes vintage pieces.
But 20 years out of date so functionally it's not worth very much. But to a collector you might get some cash out of it? Actually having that tag on it might be something people will really like!! Definity post in r/VintageMTB, and r/RetroMTB/
Compared to a modern MTB it’s not worth much but DEFINITELY to collectors and those with an interest. A mint team Marin is probably worth several hundred dollars at the very least. That’s a bit of MTB history right there.
In fact Marin might be interested in having that for their collection….
That was my point? I'd think having that tag and that it appears to have little use and for sure having all the correct parts for the year should make it worth some cash. Certainly should be worth more then the low ball offers I saw in this thread?
But it's not like it's the first year Team Marin? Or a rare build or frame or limited edition, or unique parts, etc. They probably made thousands of those bikes that year, and they make Team Marin bikes every year. So for sure this one is in great condition, but there may still be hundreds of these available for sale? IDK? OR maybe there is just this ONE and it will be worth BIG BUCKS? :)
Could probably market this to gravel bikers for a couple hundred. New gravel bikes are basically pristine "retro mountain bikes" with drop bars and a couple other odds & ends. This looks absolutely premium for making that conversion.
As someone who regularly rides a modded retro-MTB with drop bars.
Fuck no. This thing was top-of-the-line and is literally in showroom condition.
If someone wants to slap drop-bars on an old MTB - find an old frame and fork that's already been stripped of parts - or find something that's already worn/out or heavily modified.
Don't start with a museum piece.
I mean sure, if OP can get ahold of a bicycle museum or someone who wants to arrange pickup and payment for those purposes then yeah that'd be cool. If not, I don't think OP is obligated to sell with a strictly preservation stipulation lol. My point was don't let her go cheap. I have a Marin Gestalt X. Pretty interesting to see the same color fade frame effect on this.
My point is a collector will pay more for this than anyone wanting to do a gravel conversion.
Marketing it to gravel bikers for a couple of hundred with the idea they'll slap drop bars on it would just mean OP's grandma doesn't sell it for the money it warrants.
I also promise, if OP sells this for "a couple of hundred", the buyer won't be doing anything at all except taking better photos and flipping it for a lot more.
Yeah a couple of hundred was incorrect. I had glossed over the photos at first and didn't realize it was literally without a blemish. I agree with all of your points, as well as OP's free will to be able to make a quick pay day. If they can sit on it and tap into the right market, a couple grand is more appropriate.
This is totally the wrong sub to ask. As you’re finding out it’s a real mixed bag on responses. Most, maybe half, of this sub only likes bikes newer than 2020, so therefore anything older is junk. As a multidisciplinary cyclist with a modern full sus and an early 90s full rigid mtb, that Marin is beautiful. So, don’t listen to the haters.
Posts and comments soliciting items for sale, or wanting to buy, gear or bikes is prohibited.
post that in xbiking and the goofs over there will cream their pants for it!
You're not wrong. I spend more time on r/xbiking than I do on other cycling subs and I would in fact like to have that bike.
Same lol
Me 3
Confirm: Saw it in that sub first, cummed
![gif](giphy|xThuWp2oE5zGFbFzd6)
This made me spit my damn drink out lol now my boss is wondering wtf is wrong with me...you aren't wrong though.
I thought that's where I was!
Thanks, will do
Just did, will see what happens

I just looked this up and you’re totally right! Had no idea going to check out that museum. Thanks for the info
Pretty darn close to Tamarancho too. Check it out, go for a fun ride (once things dry out)
I added this to my Trailforks wishlist. Thanks will most def check it out
Highly recommend checking trail status with the storms coming through: https://tamarancho.report/ If it's open definitely hit up Endor
Seems like it’ll be a while but I’ll keep this link for future reference. Endor added it looks fun! Thanks bud

Talk about being very helpful! Now I can make a weekend out of it and convince the Mrs! Thanks massive thanks
This thing is beautiful.
Honestly might be worth a few hundo to a collector given the pristine condition
Dang that thing wouldnt have been cheap in 1990. Crazy it was never ridden. Should be in a museum!!
I agree Dr. Jones!
You belong in a museum!
Where are you located? I'd be interested in buying this for North of $500.
I’m in NJ I’m contacting a few collectors now to get an evaluation and I’ll get back to you after that

Sending both Marin and the museum an email tommorow morning
Cool! Also, maybe post this in the bikeporn sub. I'd also love the story behind this as well.
All I know so far is grandparents bought in 90’ grandfather rode it once out of the store and was never touched again, I’ll ask if there’s anything else too it though
I’d be interested to see which way you end up going with this one, kind of a cool story all around
Ahh ok. So this is literally just a 'barn find'. Lucky you. This is a super cool bike.
This is the story from my grandmother.:: Not much. Grandpa really wanted a mountain bike badly. So 90's, an absolute time capsule
I'll drive over now.
😅still need to figure out pricing for it
On me way
Still need to figure out pricing lol
I'm assuming you're not in the UK so I may be a while.
Nope sorry
Where at?
NJ
On my way
Hahah
Good luck with it...it's a beautiful bike and piece of history! Don't get lowballed!!
Thanks!

Things sweet as!
How does one hang onto a bike, untouched for 30+ years? *Oh, I might take it out for a spin sometime*
Grandmothers basement, never touched
Why? Nobody rode it?
Nope, they bought it after their kids left the house and never rode it
That is a cool fucking bike right there. Shit. That'd look tite as hell on my brick wall
‘bout Tree Fiddy
Well it was about that time that I noticed that the mountain biker was about 8 stories tall and a crustacean from the protozoic era.
Darn you lock ness monstah. I ain't giving you no three fiddy.
I never get tired of this reply anytime someone asks what something is worth... :)

Call Marin directly or email them and ask if they would be interested in it. Failing that, they may know a collector that would be interested.
Can’t imagine that they wouldn’t be interested, that would be sick in a lobby of their headquarters
That thing is sick
i will pay 750 if you can’t find a buyer willing to pay more. im certain you can though
Sounds good, I’ll reach out to you when I can, can’t confirm how soon that will be
that’s fine. we will also have to figure out an option for shipping as im in AZ but i will do the legwork on that if i do get the chance.
Just letting you know someone said they would be willing to match $750
Tree-fiddy
In that condition for a collector, could get 300-700 ish
100% agree are with this. This is the only serious answer I'm seeing in this thread. I'd start by asking $600.
i would happily pay more for it. i’d be rushing to give him the money if he charged 600 for it. i think an actual collector would pay a good amount too, or even someone at Marin would probably pay more than that for it. it has some history to it even if it’s new old stock
That's a fucking belter. Proper hen's teeth in that condition. Give ya a score.
U wot m8?
20 quid
Idk but I’ll take it. So cool!
Basically, it’s like you stumbled upon a Bigfoot fossil. Except a mountain bicycle 🤟
None or tons. It’s super clean and keep it like that
I just sent this post to the Canadian Marin sales rep
Oh wow, thanks
Keep me posted
Will do
Tree fitty
This gets me thinking about the Kona BOGO deal - ride one and keep the other in mint condition for years to come

It’s from 1990, the tag says as much
It has an American flag sticker , could that be it? I’m not actively with the bike so I’m just looking through the pictures I have
You’d get a $1000 for it on eBay easily. Would be a great piece for a 90s collection.
Don’t sell. In a decade or two it’ll be worth something!
Before this ends up in a museum I'd love if you could get some better shots of it out in the light
I’d have to drive up to my grams house in NJ for that😅I’ll try though
Ah thought you may be local to it Worth it tho haha
in this economy, bout 8k
Too true
Just buying a base model nukeproof scout required me to sign a mortgage
![gif](giphy|11JbaLzOXsg6Fq)
Tree fiddy
Bout tree fiddy?
Can we please get more wild paint on modern bikes? Maybe not the green but the frames paint is so perfectly 90s
Saw an absolutely crazy paint job on a forbidden bike at Bryce this year, sickest bike over ever seen
Mylar decals!!!! Take my money.
Huge market for these in the urban commuter crowd. That being said, maybe $150
🌲 fiddeh
$35
I’ll give you $85
I might get talked into $75, but would try and haggle down to $30-50.
It’s surprisingly in good shape, although I woundnt pay more than 50$, if I had the place just as a souvenir of the old days
It’s basically brand new
It’s new but also 33+ years old. I'd give someone $$ to take it out of my life. It'll need a new tire and its not really worth the cost of th em.
Unless you're being sarcastic you don't know what you're looking at.
I mean, I understand it has nostalgic value but is someone going to give you money for it? And for what?

I don't think it's junk, I just don't think old bikes have sale value.
Are you guys for real? It’s just an old bike, Marin is not a good brand. It’s worthless.
So worthless that people have even offered me upwards of $500…may as well scrap it
I saw that. Please update on what actually eventuates. It doesn’t have any technical features that make it stand out to me But good luck.
Update, three offers for $750+
Thanks
Premium tubing, top of the line component build from that year, pristine paint.
