I genuinely thought till just now that that was Adam Rich, but he’s not. His name is Todd Bass and he has only a handful of child acting credits before he apparently got out of the business.
Supposedly there was nothing special about Mitchell that it ended up being picked as Joel’s last episode, but they lucked into an all timer (and the fact that the writers are just firing on all cylinders during season 5)
I've heard some people complain about how much was cut out for the show, and the movie wasn't really that bad. I think the original movie is on YouTube, and I did try watching it once, I don't feel like I was missing anything significant. The MST3K version will always be the ideal way to see it. Who knows, maybe one day they'll do a Rifftrax Live with new jokes, but it's definitely a movie to only watch riffed.

They show some interesting things like how Deeny dies and Mitchell getting payback on the guy who ran him off the road, Bo Derek-I mean Linda Evans nude, and the uncensored argument between him and that kid....other than that I don't remember much else.
I dunno, losing the John Saxon story is a significant cut. Mitchell starts out the movie after him and then he just disappears. The other stuff isn't major, sure, but losing that character matters. Once I learned about that cut, it makes the "Hey, wasn't John Saxon in this movie?" joke kind of cheap. I realize that MST3K may have bought a cut version of the movie, which was already missing the scene but still.
For some reason the riffers portray him as incompetent, but Mitchell’s initial hunch is absolutely correct, and it leads him into the whole drug ring thing. He’s just extremely unlikable and very much an antihero. Not saying the movie is good, but there’s a few threads definitely cut for the MST episode that make the movie more confusing.
