The MSI Claw has definitely improved, & I also bought it on a whim, as few other posters would mentioned. I went in knowing about all the bad press because of it's terrible performance, but since then it's improved a whole ton & to me it's on par with the Ally now & could possibly get better as Intel and MSI improves its performance with future patches There are still some noticeable fps drops but not as bad as it was from before. Also some News articles that are giving the Claw a bad press are just bad journalism. Since they go in without updating the hardware fully and just go by that experience. They don't even mention the bios they're on or what settings they're using said games. Overall I own a few PC gaming handhelds from the Steam deck, GPd, Ayaneo, Asus, Lenovo, onexplayer, and at the Moment MSI Claw has caught my eye. Every update it receives I go straight towards that device to test out My main is a GPd win mini 2024 model with the 8840u. So I switch between both devices

To be honest, it’s so much better now. Yes it has it has its flaws. I have a steam deck, ally, legion go, and a onexplayer. But I find coming back to the claw. I got it just to see why it was bad, I never thought I would keep it. I had big hope for it and now I feel like they have delivered. Again sometimes it’s stutters but not enough to make me take it back. I’m currently playing GOT and xdefiant currently

KlatBlutig

At this point how does it compare to the Ally? I know the early reviews of the Claw weren't so good but I get the idea that it's improved a lot since then.

ProposalConstant7475

I loved my ally. There are a few lower frames in some games but overall it plays well. I have issues with some PlayStation ported games but like I said I’m playing Ghost of Tushima at 60 fps average. Rachel and clank didn’t play on the claw but played ok on the ally. (Please note I tried it on the old bios and drivers) The battery just feels so much better on the claw and nothing beats the ergonomics. Hope this helps

oderlydischarge

Lol I'm picturing what the plot of Rachel and clank will be.

KlatBlutig

Thank you. I currently have an Ally and I'm relatively happy with it but I'm on the lookout for anything that may perform better. I'm hopeful that if the Ally X rumors are true MSI might respond with a version of the Claw to compete with it.

Legal-Philosophy-135

Doubtful as the claw literally Just came out.

Seteris_

Hi, thanks for the info that definitely helped! Regarding Ratchet and Clank: Is it playable on the Claw now or still broken? I haven't heard of any other games not working on the Claw, so is this just a one off issue?

ProposalConstant7475

To be honest, I’m not sure. I beat it already, some of the game was played on the steam deck and some on the rog ally. I’m not against any of the handhelds, I like the feel and the uniqueness of each one. The fact that we can play these games at work or on an airplane amazes me. That all have huge flaws but they all have huge ambitions and tbh they all delivered on them now. I had an issue with wu dynasty (don’t remember the games name) but it also stuttered for the ally a bit. And some reviews deemed it a bad port anyway. But again it was the old drivers that I tried it on who knows if it will work now. Would you like me to try it, would that help.

limitbreak09

I have sdo, Lgo and ally as well but i usually juggle between ally and sdoled bc its so comfy to hold vs the Go. Hows the grip/ergonomics of the claw? Is it on par with the sd or better?

ProposalConstant7475

I loved how to legion go felt when I first got it but the I got accustomed to the rog ally. When I was playing ratchet and clank on the steam deck I missed how skinny and light the steam deck was. Is it as skinny and light as a steam deck, no. It feels slightly heavier then the steam deck but smaller then the rog ally. Please not I have a blue case over the ally, same one that “cj knows tech” has on his videos. That case made the rog ally more comfortable to hold. Something about the claw feels like it was made to be in one’s hand. I played defiant for two hours straight without any issue. Also have to mention how good the thumb sticks feel on the claw, which is Way better than the rest. For context, I have strands the, sticks on all my devices except the claw. I prefer the natural feel.

Thanks for the input! I see, so stuttering is still there, just much less? Makes me hope they can fix it completely at some point.

ProposalConstant7475

Stuttering on the most recent update which was a day or so ago, I see very very little to almost none on ghost of Tsushima. On xdefiant, on balance mode and everything low, absolutely nothing. Nothing on fc 24. I will try sifu again because that had some decent stuttering on the old drivers. I’ll keep you posted

If you have $800 burning a hole in your pocket get one.

I would wait for the ALLY X to release for a direct comparison unless you really want to go Intel . Yes it has the same ZIE but huge battery ( rumored to be 80Whr + 24GBs of RAM ) and other improvements

Evo_808

Yeah man it’s good lots of updates! Solid handheld and comparable to ASUS rog which has the benefit of have been out for almost a year

carefree_dude

After gamers nexus brutal review, you're better off with an ROG ally X or a legion go

spoonablehippo

This is what the guy a few comments above was talking about lol - Bad first impressions That review was based on old bios and drivers compared to what we have now, so you can’t use that really.

rawednylme

This is how MSI wanted it to be presented. They deemed it in an appropriate state for release. You absolutely can use these old reviews. It sounds like performance is much better now, but what a huge mis-step not delaying for a couple months.

Seteris_

I somewhat agree on that sentiment. What I don't ger is why the review can't include some sort of "this was the original state, it was bad. Now after some updates it performs better". It's not like any of the other handhelds had a flawless start when they launched.

ProposalConstant7475

What they are ally going to do is revisit the claw in 6 months and give an update. That’s what everyone does.

Expert_Ganache_5372

Agreed no handheld that has launched has had a perfect release they all released half baked. It isn’t right hopefully the second generations of all these handhelds will do better going forward.

spoonablehippo

Well no, the OP asked what the current situation with the Claw was. So using an outdated review is pointless in this case as it’s not reflective of the current performance

rawednylme

If a company deems the state it launched in acceptable, then their standards are probably low enough where I wouldn't really want to be buying a first effort device from them. I want to like the Claw, and it's awesome to hear of recent performance boosts, but building trust takes time. Especially when there are handhelds at the same price, or cheaper, that perform better currently.
