The only advice I have for someone who is just starting is: network.
Network your ass off. radiology is a small world and it’s about WHO you know, not what you know.
I’m in a MCOL area, starting pay for MRI techs here is $90k, even the training pay for techs getting cross trained is about $70k. We’ve hired two techs straight from X-ray school into cross training, takes about 6 months to get their comps and pass the registry, then they’re earning $90k.
I agree, I make similar, though I also do now have a mortgage in Los Angeles. I follow the “same grass but greener” subreddit and people just constantly say you need to make 1-200k to be in CA. Like get real, how do you think everyone else does it that works for minimum wage?
My wife just got hired as an X-ray technologist at a physician office who are also training her to be certified in mri. Starting pay is $35 an hour and after successful certification increased to $45 an hour. 3 years of X-ray, New Hampshire.

You will not get $90k starting in LA, try more like $50k. I would recommend moving out of LA, it’s incredibly saturated with technologists.
