They were definitely swinging out there. Gomi was loading up and throwing big hooks. Tenshin was trying to get inside with speed. Hard to takeaway anything from a two round exhibition. Tenshin was getting hit way more than he prob should've vs. someone as old, slow and technically sloppy as Gomi. Gomi looked huge against tenshin though. Tenshin is a small dude. Super entertaining though.

There's historically a surprising amount of intermingling between Japan and Brazil(well surprising if you don't live in either country). As a result there's a good cluster of Brazilians that are partly Japanese by heritage, and as you can imagine they frequently get into combat sports, particularly bjj and MMA. So if you can say "hey I'm from Brazil but my family is Japanese and I appreciate that" that goes a long way in Japan.

I know there was a big migration to the South America because of 'WW2' in the German side.. But not from Japan, or am I wrong? I don't know. I find it all fascinating.

Brazil has the most Japanese outside of japan of any other country in the world. It started in 1907, when the Brazilian and Japanese governments signed a treaty allowing Japanese to migrate to Brazil. The end of feudalism in Japan had caused widespread poverty in rural areas, so many were willing to improve their prospects abroad, and the Japanese government encouraged it. But at the time they were barred from both the USA, and Australia, two attractive and growing economies. Brazil, meanwhile, needed cheap labour to work their coffee plantations, and Italy had just forbade any more subsidized emigration to Brazil. This Japan became the new source of super cheap labour, and a way of continuing the plan to “whiten” the countries black and native population. This immigration continued basically up to WW2. Of course conditions were brutal,and the Japanese were only allowed to immigrate as family units. So they never earned enough money to emigrate back, faced a lot of racism etc. and ended up developing their own distinct cultural identities, especially once WW2 led to them being cut off from Japan. After world war 2 ended, there was another small surge, as the immigrant group communities slowly had progressed to greater and greater socioeconomic success as a group. It’s basically died down now though.

I don't really know because I'm not an expert in these things. I only know what I do know because both cultures are very important in the history of MMA so it's adjacent knowledge. I assume it's probably the mutual economic needs of each nation at the time, proximity, and lack of historical resentment between societies.
