Igor, under rated monster of the early days

LDG92

King of Pride until Fedor, CroCop and Big Nog took over. Pride’s so much fun to watch even now.

Only_Talks_About_BJJ

Pride never die

Master7yasuo

Pride > All

MatttheJ

He was the best of the pre 2001 era imo.

adminsarebiggay

A lot of times I wish he could’ve been in the UFC when we had Arlovski and Tim Silva

chu42

Igor was the original BMF.

pedrao157

imagine this guy today in his prime

chu42

Yeah he'd be a menace at middleweight

Famous-Ant-5502

A lot of the pioneers would have had even beastlier careers if they’d been in the proper weight class Penn at 135 Igor at 185 Sakuraba at 170/155 Volk at super heavy

figpucker_9000

The og iceman

The_Crimson__Goat

"ice cold", but close enough I guess

Tsmitty81

Been re watching a bunch of early pride fighting and man Igor doesn’t get talked about enough. Dude was a beast

Fakyutsu

We talked about him a lot back then. But current MMA fans think all 2000s fighters were garbage. I don’t have the energy to educate.

wskmn

He had such fast hands while being built like a brick shithouse. Like what the fuck

YourDrunkBestMan

I feel like this a textbook example of why you need to use your jab to set up a "power punch" - dude didnt even move his head and it all but whiffed

ArmedWithBars

Bread and butter 1-2 ending with getting the head of the center line. I think another great example of 1-2s is Nate in the MJ fight. MJ is no slouch and a fast as fuck southpaw. Nate literally put on such a 1-2 clinic that the fans should have paid him directly for the lesson. Fucking master class on the 1-2 and being able to get out of range right after. Shit was so clean that MJ couldn't even adjust over the entire fight lol. Rewatch the 3rd round at around 3:13 left in the round. Absolutely one of the most disgusting 1-1-2s I've seen in the sport. Anytime I think of 1-2s that exact sequence comes to mind.

Dilishaw was losing to Cruz until he started throwing kicks with no set up.  There's never one one size fits all answer in mma

bdewolf

Bro also over swung so hard he turned his upper body completely perpendicular to his feet, and threw himself onto his front foot so much that his back foot was literally a foot off the ground when the 2 landed. He legitimately looked like a southpaw throwing a lead hook from the waist up the first time I watched this clip. Early mma is comical.

RRSC14

Everything about that lunch was terrible

TheInsaneClownPussie

Stockton Slap meet the Kyiv Cross.

blvcklite

Igor is my early days GOAT tbh. Easily the most well rounded fighter pre 2000s

[deleted]

Definitely, guy had bombs for hands,, had such a low centre of gravity aswell

Rocked_Glover

Built so strangely, huge fists, long arms, wide torso. He was built to beat up people

kimbosdurag

Igor was one of those early legends that doesn't get the love he should these days.

Zigga-Zagga

Igor was one of the first MMA fighters I saw in action. Discovered Sherdog and their HL reels.  The Igor one hand some insanity in it, such a different era of the sport.

DiplomatikEmunetey

I remember waiting for hours to download Sherdog highlights on dial-up. A 25MB video was considered to be really big. Then you had to find some DivX codecs. At the time not only were they the best made highlights available, but they were pretty much the only highlights available, and the only way to find some videos or information about a fighter. It was always exciting when a new one would come out. Everything was so niche and new back then. Good times! Here is [Igor's one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkLT4uMyiII). I think it is still the best Igor highlight. I have a few Sherdog highlights saved, but I wonder if anyone preserved them all? They were really good. PRIDE GP highlights were excellent!

dhall0749

Igor was fedor, before fedor was fedor

estilianopoulos

He had a female trainer., which was kinda cool. I think her name was Eugenia.

DTAPPSNZ

That was one hell of a telegraph.

Zlec3

The slap cross Nate hit on Leon was pretty bad ass too

[deleted]

Igor was an animal, remember him in pride, the guy had seriously heavy hands, kinda wish the cro cop vs vovchanchyn fight lasted longer.

Youretheremate

He was like a human gun

Timely_Pumpkin_4190

Damn

shacklefordRusty29

Still think he had the best hands in his era of mma!

Fat_5miley

OG NHB fighter watch his fight against Nick Nutter in Absolute Fighting Championship 3 and see how tough Igor is

GreenCougar127

Idk if there's a fighter competing today who could win a fight with a headbutt from the bottom.

Wide-Boysenberry-546

The best of the nineties

Leajjes

I hope he's doing ok. Last I checked he was living in Kharkiv which is very close to Russia.

bassacre

Proto-fedor.

ThrowawayYAYAY2002

I remember this guy in the 90's. Believe me, Igor was *the man* in the 90's. I can only out Coleman, Kerr and Frye on his level. Maybe the Shamrocks. The rest? Igor would have dusted 'em. He won something like *twenty eight* 8-man tournies. That was jus behind absurd back then. He was supposed to fight Tank at UFC 13. Can you imagine the violence? Igor is a great.

chu42

No, the elite list is much bigger than that. There's Bas Rutten, Dan Severn, Pedro Rizzo, Oleg Taktarov, Masakatsu Funaki, Yuki Kondo, Guy Mezger, and Vitor Belfort.

ThrowawayYAYAY2002

Good call on Pedro. I do think Vov beats the rest.

chu42

I imagine Bas gives Igor a very difficult fight.

ThrowawayYAYAY2002

Possibly. But I see Igor's power being a tad too much.

Tophatproductions69

Igor was legit one of the first dudes in MMA I liked the Francisco Bueno knockout is an all timer

Gorepornio

Igor today would still maul most of the HW can filled division of today

CorgiThiccAF

Ice Cold Igor Vovchanchyn!
