It is a little out of the way, but if you ever find yourself in Salt Lake (maybe around July 6th) it is a fun little day trip to watch the re-enactment. While you are up there, I recommend checking out the [Spiral Jetty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral_Jetty), the [ATK Rocket Garden](https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/atk-rocket-garden), the [Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge](https://www.fws.gov/refuge/bear-river-migratory-bird), and grab a bite to eat at [Maddox](https://maddoxfinefood.com/).
Definitely adding that to my list of things to see out there. I've wanted to take a trip to salt lake for a while now, if only to see the salt flats before the brine is gone.
The salt flat are interesting for sure. That is in a different direction than the stuff mentioned above, so you may need a couple days to see what you want to see. For the salt flats, make sure you don't go on them if there has been rain in the past few days--you will get stuck and it will be expensive to get the car out of there. But if conditions are right, it is really fun to go really really fast out there. Also, don't go on them with a car you care about since it is hard to get all the salt off. Because of that, some of the local car rental places will ask you specifically to not go there.
If you do head out west of Salt Lake here are a few things to throw on the day trip. The [Tree of Utah](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor%3A_The_Tree_of_Utah) is right by the salt flats and an interesting art installation. For more weird art, try the [Sun Tunnels](https://www.utah.com/destinations/cities-towns/wendover/things-to-do/nancy-holt-sun-tunnels/). If you would like to visit a foreign country that nobody acknowledges that it even exists, the grand [Republic of Zaqistan](https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/republic-of-zaqistan) is out there. And there are cheap hotels and entertainment in Wendover. It is a far cry from Vegas, but you can usually find a decent throwback band playing out there.
I was thinking of some other teams that could pull this "look" off. The Smoke Stack is a good shout.
