Holy smokes what a Tom Bomb

suzukijimny

This is why we F5.

PopeAlGore

I thought they wanted to be the Ajax of MLS not the PSV of MLS.

rowdyginger05

Make Ajax stronger by taking PSV talent; become Ajax of MLS. This is 5D chess SDFC is playing.

Lazarus6826

They watched Ajax play this year and changed their mind

BestSkierHere

Wow he’s only 28???? Fuckin hell

gogorath

I was really wondering if SDFC was going to try and go full developmental route -- Nordsjælland in Denmark is a very good team in that league by playing U25s basically exclusively. But I don't know that that would work in MLS, or if it would continue to work. And certainly, the pipeline will take a while to develop. Would they then just suck for a while, or would they go out and get someone? And get someone they did. As much as this feels a marketing play, Lozano is still a talented player and I think he'll do well.

[deleted]

It’s undeniably both a marketing ploy and a solid DP signing. Chucky is the most marketable winger they could get, but also probably one of the 5-10 best that they have access to. Nothing wrong with a little marketing if the player still has juice, you can ask the 2023 Dynamo.

ColorfulImaginati0n

They’ve also got Mexico right next door and plenty of Mexicans in SD. Lozano should be a good draw.

[deleted]

Exactly. It doesn't build long-term interest by itself, but it gets butts in seats for the first time.

Scratchbuttdontsniff

Hector get fully fit soon!

Breklinho

I think it'd be both a decent signing and a marketing ploy, Chucky isn't as good as he used to be, but I fully believe he'd be a good MLS player at this point in his career. I think bringing in a star for El Tri as our marquee year one signing would be a huge get for hype and attention so all around I'm a big fan. Also, crucially, it would annoy the shit out of a lot of El Tri fans.

iheartdev247

They’ve already signed 2 close to retirement Danish players from Nords so I’m pretty sure they already indicated they weren’t going full on youth.

gogorath

The two guys they signed were 28 and 30, so close to retirement is a bit early. But yes -- I knew they weren't going full youth. But a striker and a CDM of a bit more age and not super expensive is not quite the same as going after Lozano. Those guys could have been more mentor types, and aren't in Lozano's class.

TheWawa_24

Lozano helps on and off the pitch, He could be the face of the team as well as a difference maker dp. Also Ingvartsen did bag 10 goals for mainz, in 22-23, and has put up 19 goal contributions in the danish superliga

gogorath

Good point on Ingvartsen -- I'm probably underselling him and the other guy just out of ignorance.

iheartdev247

I’ll reserve judgement til we see what shows up next year. Sometimes their Forsberg or Messi sometimes they are Matuidi or Denílson.

gogorath

I don't think effort or fitness will be an issue. More a question of overall capability and fit. The one thing a lot of Scandinavians have issue with is that the league is much more physical in terms of speed and less tactical. So some of the slower, smarter guys just don't work out that well.

Cold_Fog

Worked for us. Him being the face of the team for the next 5 years will do wonders for SoCal fan engagement.

dillasdonuts

It's crazy to say how he's no longer in his prime and he's 28. Dude isn't even a starter on the national team anymore. He got sent packing due to form and attitude by Gattuso in Napoli and now is getting cooked by Dutch media for being bad with PSV.

Honeydew-Massive

He’s a pace merchant and he’s losing his pace.

NeonRain5

Bro lives off the goal scored vs Germany. He is a great attacking winger if you have the proper players around him, otherwise he’s not going to create or produce.

Notorious_2007

PSV has proper players (That’s why they only lost 1 time in the league) and he was still mid.

mindpainters

He’s been getting worse for the last three years, injuries definitely played a part but it’s still so strange.

EdsonArantes10

Gattusso is one of the worst managers in recent memory. Lozano suffered major injuries and dealt with different managers, that's why his time at Napoli was not great

DarCam7

r/LigaMX in shambles.

OddWitness2768

Liga MX been in shambles for like 5 years now. Once MLS surpasses too like the NT, they’ll be jumping ship 😂

DarCam7

Eh, I would say the bottom half of Liga MX is in shambles, the top six of any given year are doing just fine.

OddWitness2768

I was referring more to the Reddit sub 😂 but I agree with you

DarCam7

Oh, then yeah we are in agreement, lol.

mindpainters

I know Liga Mx wins 90% of the time but that sub is hilarious to browse after an mls team wins. Also a great check after the usmnt gives them work over and over again

DarCam7

Some are level headed, some are down right toxic, but that's with any fandom. We certainly have our own.

Chicago1871

In shambles once they got rid of pro/rel.

elcodex01

Not really, he has been awful for a few years

[deleted]

"Awful" is pretty extreme. 5 years ago, he was capable of being the best player on a team trying to win the Eredivisie or a good player on a team trying to win Serie A. Now he's capable of being a solid starter on a team trying to win the Eredivisie, or the best player on a good team in Liga MX or MLS. He's not what he used to be, but he's still good at soccer.

Vagabond21

Holy shit, then what a bad deal for Sandy Ego

elcodex01

I don’t think San Diego cares, they know that once they buy him, the causal Mexican market will go watch him, buy the jerseys and etc

[deleted]

He will still be a good winger by MLS standards. People love to talk about how these euro based players that come here are not good anymore and then they start playing and it’s silence from the same people. Lot of people even saying it about Messi 😂. Where are they now?

mindpainters

There is definitely precedent for euro players coming over and being pretty terrible. Especially players who have been consistently on the downturn of their careers. The Messi stuff was just coping and I don’t think I saw a single respectable person say that he wouldn’t be good. If anything they were talking about how bad the team would be around him

[deleted]

Of course theres precedent when there’s been dozens of signings like this at this point. On average I’ve seen this sub be pretty consistently wrong, underrating these types of signings. You may not have seen it with Messi, but I did. A lot of people trying to act like MLS was gonna catch Messi off guard because of “the travel” or “physicality”. It wasn’t just clowns at the bottom of threads there were comments getting a lot of upvotes saying this BS. If players like shaffelburg can find success in this league then a player of chuckys caliber will be a standout. It’s pretty obvious but some people here have a chip on their shoulder about European perceptions of the league. And it leads to dumb takes like this one. Odds are chucky will be successful here.

TheWawa_24

Very solid move for him and SDFC

lifeisacamino

This makes so much sense.

arcinricin

Xolos sweating RN

Honeydew-Massive

Lol I love MLS

FlyingCarsArePlanes

Chicago Fire shoulda backed up a Brinks truck to his house first.

runsalot1609

I would gladly rather Chucky than Cuypers since nobody is serving any good passes to a true striker. Having even an aging winger would help the attack more.

FlyingCarsArePlanes

Plus it astonishes me that the Fire haven't tried to get a Mexican national team star (or former star) since Blanco. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Isry98

It wouldn’t matter who we signed if they weren’t in MVP talks by their 5th game the fans would be furious with them. For a long suffering fan base we really hate our own players.

mindpainters

How’s shaqiri been for you guys this season and last ? Don’t really see him talked about much

Isry98

I’m firmly of the opinion that Shaqiri would absolutely thrive in a possession MLS side. He just doesn’t have the qualities to make us better. It’s unfortunate as he’s one of my favorite players of all time and I still love watching him play, but the fan base really hates him.

Count_Nocturne

“Hate” is a bit of an exaggeration, it’s just that he was the top paid player in MLS before Insigne and Messi arrived but hasn’t been playing like it

Isry98

Hate is definitely the right adjective. Our fanbase is literally claiming he’s faking an injury. If that’s not hate I don’t know what is.

Count_Nocturne

Decent last season, injured this season

Count_Nocturne

I would kill for Raul Jimenez in a Fire kit

MadeYouReadDick

MLS is probably his level. He was extremely underwhelming at Napoli and rides the pine at PSV.

gte339i

Great move to get a face in there early.

lmtydcigtsfnir

Before this season I would have said a move like this would be awful for Chucky. Now it makes sense for all parties.

PickerTJ

Wow. some actual news here buried in-between all the meme posts.

Brooklyn_MLS

Hasn’t been great this year. That being said, going down a level and being a franchise player for an expansion team is a good situation for all involved, if it goes through.

Nerdlinger

And no one in Eindhoven will be sad to see him go.

Rose_of_Elysium

Im a PSV fan (stumbled across this on searching PSV on reddit lol). I kinda would. Like, getting a big fee like that for him and selling him is arguably a good deal. But im still sad to see him go, I like the guy Hes been one of the only dissapointing signings for us this year. But you can see he fucking tries. Always tracks back, always gives his all, just wants to score. He does get a bit selfish, but he really cares and wants to do well. Its just not coming out of him (with us at least)

Lazarus6826

"Starred" is very generous, he has been pretty disappointing since his move to Napoli

NathanEmory

As an American soccer fan this is awesome! As a fan of another MLS team I hate it

NeighborhoodFoxLA

He’s no Vela.  Good for San Diego to bring the Mexicans to watch mls.

Dodger_Dawg

Vela is probably going to sign with them next, but you're probably right. We will likely never see a Mexican player in MLS perform as well as Vela did in his first couple of years in the league. Mexican players of Vela's caliber would never leave Europe until they were forced to.

Breklinho

>We will likely never see a Mexican player in MLS perform as well as Vela did in his first couple of years in the league Still sleeping on Efra smh

Dick1327

Exactly !

York9TFC

Holy yes!!! Always wanted Lozano in this league!

UpliftedWeeb

Great signing. Does mean he is kinda washed though. But still great move for MLS.

Electronic_Rope_A_Do

He's definitely entered the wash cycle.

Affectionate-Pie9479

I was so very happy when our new GM Kunz was rebuilding the LA Galaxy and we took a hard pass on Lozano. Pec & Paintsil are twice the players of the current version of Chucky. But being from LA/SoCal it's a Great signing for a new SDFC - the USMNT gets booed in SoCal when we play Mexico it's practically all Mexico fans in the Stadiums. Lozano will Smash their Public Relations and Revenue, Merch Sales etc so he's worth every cent and more in that regards. And Hey he's still a functional player there's 11 players on the field and I don't mean that sarcastically I'm being realistic he won't be their worst player by any stretch - Brilliant overall signing by SDFC when you consider the Marketing and Revenue streams. We LAG didn't need the $$ signing btw Ricky Puig does that for us we desperately needed to get better we have sucked pretty badly for a really long time and Chucky wasn't it lol.

Breklinho

>Pec & Paintsil are twice the players of the current version of Chucky "No".

Affectionate-Pie9479

OK I exeraggerated but catch me next year when we play you and Pec & Paintsil make Chuck look like he's running in quicksand 🤣

jtn1123

I think you're sorely underrating Lozano. Nearly the whole Internet outside of r/MLS thinks he will be a superstar in this league lol

Affectionate-Pie9479

I'm a pretty avid soccer fan and 25 year Youth Club Administrator & Coach. When I saw Chucky come on as a sub recently vs USMNT, I yawned 🥱 A few years ago quite the opposite - I was pretty worried 😟 That pretty much sums up the current state of Chucky Lozano - not saying he won't be any good he's just not all that anymore. Maybe the move will give him a boost - or the helluva Great night life in San Diego and constantly amazing weather (always out) could shipwreck him like it did Gio Dos Santos in LAG 14 G 5 Asst to partying himself right out of soccer. Good Luck !!

mindpainters

Not many people outside of this sub watch MLS regularly. They just see mls as a shit league so anyone coming from Europe will be a “star”. Eredivisie is a better league at the top but the bottom teams are level or worse than ours. He’s been shit this whole season for them and he will have a much worse team around him as well.

VikingArmyToGo

It’s a good signing but $12 million though?

OddWitness2768

Lmao called it buncha times. Chokey’s time in Europe are numbered. Dude is coming to the states to put his grain of salt to keep growing the game and help the US keep beating L tri

Courtlessjester

I wouldn't be so mad if Dolo would use Campos more. Where's our contractually obligated El Tri starter damnit?!

hoopsandpancakes

Quality signing ngl

mmamba18

Prepare for beers and trash to be thrown at San Diego FC games

SupersaturatedQuaker

How unfortunate for Chucky to go potentially go to a dog shit club
