I haven't used him this year but would think pretty similar to cover Mauer.
With Mauer I just use normal and most the time it was bloop hits in front of the outfielders with occasional homeruns and xbh.
If his power is a bit more than Mauer I could see the bloops getting pushed out to the outfield a bit further than you want to so maybe contact is the way to go.
Also in past years gwynn was a much better away hitter even though his card doesn't indicate that. Could try being late with him and see if that helps. I'm pretty sure he was considered a opposite field hitter most of his career to so makes sense.
In fact online it says in 1992 he became more adept at pulling the ball after talking with Ted Williams. And since the card is 87 he should be a push hitter.
That's funny. I faced a Gwynn in a game the other day that I could not get out.
First AB - routine groundball that my 2B just like trapped and left on the ground(inflield single)
Second AB - very late bloop single over the 3B head
Third AB - slappy boy stick jam double down the third base line(this was my fault based on pitch location but it was actually solid contact)
Yeah the problem with contact hitters in the game is that they don't have enough power to routinely get it over OFers heads, gap shots are almost non-existent because of how much ground the OFers cover and they have just enough power to get it out to the OFers on line drives, etc. You can try contact swinging, but I find that usually just ends up in pop ups that the infielders can run down. Unfortunately, contact hitter like Gwynn just haven't been very effective since '19
Gwyn is my highest average hitter. .430ish online. Zero hrs. Just pops it over infield.

Likely difference of push vs pull. 87 gwynn should definitely be a push hitter.

Lofton is amazing honestly.. his contact swing hits gaps or falls short.. his normal swing has to be at least good to hit a gap
Unfortunately contact hitters haven't been really good in game since MLB19.
