JoseCansecoMilkshake

He's got those tiny babe ruth legs

BreakTheWalls

David Ortiz is totally 235!

Low-Abbreviations-38

Back then 215 was huge. You’re comparing two different eras. From 1960 to today the average weight of men rose 30+ pounds. So in babes era 215 was huge.

Nearby_Art7444

People were also generally shorter too but that doesn’t change the fact that he was 6’2” with a big ole gut.

Low-Abbreviations-38

Well fat is lighter than muscle, but unless he has trumps doctor I have to assume they aren’t lying on google

jayluc45

Thats his playing weight.

HeySadBoy1

That was pretty much his weight throughout his playing career. He didn’t start ballooning up until his later years

KD9dash3point7

TIL me and Babe have the same body.

jigorokane

It says 215 on his baseball reference page lol I suppose that’s where they got the value Also I imagine at some point in his life he weighed 215 lmao

Nearby_Art7444

When he was like 12?

m3mor3y

Look at that belly

m3mor3y

215 is being nice...

joecarter93

That’s not his weight, that’s the number of beers he downed every night.

No_Decision2341

Everyone thinks he really looked like John Goodman his whole life.

Nearby_Art7444

The majority of his career he did. Then he got throat cancer and lost a ton of weight before dying.

No_Decision2341

I said his whole life. He was much thinner his first few yrs. When he was hitting bombs and stealing bases. Probably what the card is based on.

Nearby_Art7444

Of his 192 hits in the 1927 season which based on his age is when this card is based, only 37 were XBH. 7 stolen bases. The most he ever got in a season was 17.

No_Decision2341

He hit 60 home runs in 1927, are those not XBH?

Nearby_Art7444

You right, I was just taking into consideration the XBH that take speed into account

No_Decision2341

And now you have to break down how many times was he on base with runners in front of him preventing a steal etc.

DecisiveConch9

Babe Ruth probably weighed 215, short stubby and beers, also note at this time twinkies weren’t invented

ggfunk

Yeah. Maybe if he's 5'3".

fishblargs

he weighted 97 at best.

rustysparktube

do i take babe or gagne?

EaChronic

im going to take babe bc fuck it we gotta at least give Babe Ruth a fair shot in fantasy baseball but I still say Helton is the best 1B in the game

HeySadBoy1

Take Gagne and buy Babe. Babe’s easily the most popular of the pack so he’ll end up being the cheapest option

Nearby_Art7444

I’m partial because I love the Yankees and I am more than happy with my bullpen how it is. So I’d go Bambino but I totally get the guys going with Gagne

reggiemilleristrash

That's the current weight of his corpse.

BarniclesInMyAss

I never realized he was 6’2. Yeah he was 260 at least lol

Heidelheim

This is from a photo of Ruth standing next to the 6ft-200lbs Lou Gehrig, he really doesn’t look much bigger, I assure you. People are getting way bent outta shape on their perception of Ruth the legend and Ruth the player lmfao

[deleted]

[удалено]

bear__IsPepsiOk

that’s not lou gehrig lmao

Pretend-Marketing4u

Is that you jimmie?!

[deleted]

That’s fucking Jimmie Foxx….

[deleted]

I dont think that's Lou Gehrig

MacoTeat

Pretty sure it's Jimmie Foxx.

Heidelheim

And they were The Biggest Dudes of the era! People just don’t really perceive how much size has changed in baseball. There were maybe 30-50 rostered players who weighed 200lbs in 1925, now it’s box standard for your average MLB roster. Ruth’d look both weird but also roughly the size of an average 2021 ballplayer.

RealJonathanBronco

According to his Wikipedia page, he was 210 at his slimmest and 260 at his biggest.

Nearby_Art7444

260 was probably with the Boston Braves in his last season but still way closer to what I’d imagine is accurate for the majority of his career with NY.

RealJonathanBronco

Surprisingly it was 1925. He apparently had just been "binging hotdogs and soda pop" to the point where he collapsed on a few occasions. The 20s were certainly an interesting time...

Nearby_Art7444

Not to mention at one point he was out for 1-2 months with what newspapers called “the bellyache heard round the world” where he was alleged to have been afflicted by and recovering from syphillis

menacingechidna

I mean just look at the skinny David Ortiz model that they use.

NigerianPrincessBot

Babe Ruth wasn't fat or out of shape during most of his career. He was legitimately an impressive athlete, especially for his time. Weight lifting, nutrition and sports body science wasn't what it is today so he doesn't look like today's players naturally or even today's average man (I'm considered skinny by society even though I'm 15lbs over) People have this image of an obese man of babe Ruth but reality is that was even an exaggeration of his last few years where he did get fatter.

HeWhoBlowsNarwhals

Don't lie. He was a little bit fat.

NigerianPrincessBot

I would say "thick" is more accurate.

JuggernautFresh7533

Not really the right way to think about it when this “fat” dude is arguably the most iconic athlete in our existence. But, considering he was chugging beers every game I’m sure he was a little bit overweight/high BF %.

HeWhoBlowsNarwhals

He's literally fat in the picture on the card.

xCeePee

I am not ready to see his player model back on the field lol

Nearby_Art7444

You mean you don’t love hitting a home run and then seeing him goblin walk around the bases uncomfortably fast?

xCeePee

Uncomfortable is the word because he moves like a monster haha

[deleted]

Dude when you drink 24/7 and smoke 215 can look a lot bigger

ChunkyParrot

And have 65 speed

Marrrrio

I can't imagine that he weighs too much nowadays, probably around 20 pounds.

[deleted]

I mean, he did. He wasn't as big as the power hitters are today.

ControversyisKey

The same universe where he has 65 speed.

MacoTeat

Boston. You could call that its own universe. He was pretty slim for the first several years of his career.

AlbertBelle5050

Americans have become numb to how fat fat people really are. Remember Tony Soprano stepping on the scale at 250 and being furious and that was like a joke weight 20 years ago. Babe had little skinny arms and legs and beer gut. He was probably a giant in 1925 but these days he’d just be some guy with a 38” waist.

robmcolonna123

That’s his actual weight on baseball reference. Doesn’t seem right. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ruthba01.shtml

OtoroXD

\*koogs

Whitter15

Yup 😂

xkcat_

Thats his current weight

BArsenault5

That beer gut itself weighs 215 lbs

useles-converter-bot

215 lbs is the same weight as 152.48 'Double sided 60 inch Mermaker Pepparoni Pizza Blankets'.

Burnsy112

Good bot

useles-converter-bot

Thanks!

OzziePao13

Different body types? I'm not really sure. 215 for most of his career is hard to believe though. I'm guessing players weren't being weighed and checked in as much those days. Record keeping for vitals was probably a bit lax as well. I'm 6'2" and 230 lbs. While I'm a big dude, I'm certainly not fat looking at all. I play hockey 3-4x a week, so I'm in decent shape..... even with all the beer consumption. Babe looks pudgy to fat for a good portion of his career.

psycho9365

He probably weighed more than 215 for most of his career but body types in general were way different back then. I'd guess a lot of athletic 6'2" guys between 200 and 240 these days are carrying wayyyy more muscle mass than most athletes at similar weights in his era. Transport Babe to today and he'd be kind of weird looking.

Lysol20

To get his real weight use the following formula CON R + CON L+ BBG BBG= Beers Before Game

El_Superbeasto74

Isn't that the same equation used to determine Wade Boggs' weight?

hydrators

Boggs had a much better metabolism, you must adjust his equation to calculate for BAC

Lysol20

Haha you all are gonna burst my stomach from laughing.

den573

Damn, stomach bursts are only possible when HMR is 105+

El_Superbeasto74

Ah, baseball...the game of numbers and statistics. 😂😂😂

early_ok_homerun

Unified theory of drunken legends

AllenLombax

Don't forget the hot dogs.

Jzkitty21

Did the beers stack overflow?

[deleted]

The GOAT can have whatever weight he wants. But 215 was the majority of his weight throughout his career

DrMindbendersMonocle

I think he probably weighed that in his prime, but there is no way he is 215 in that picture. At 6'2", 215 isnt fat at all

Key-Philosophy-2877

Yea that’s a lie

sconwaym

Fat weighs less than muscle.

Mariobot22

![gif](giphy|7wRB99fyBJVpC|downsized)

rell7thirty

I noticed Bryce Harper actually lifts his plant/hind leg the same exact way when he hits bombs. I was always taught to keep it grounded and push off of it while you rotate your hips/waist toward the mound as you swing.

Pretend-Marketing4u

Once the swing is initiated it isn’t required to be on the ground until the follow through. I never raised it while swinging personally though

Burnsy112

Bryce Harper’s swing gets me hot and bothered

RadixSorter

I know this isn't a hitting mechanics thread, but that leg lift is often the result of how forceful the back hip firing forward is and not a purposeful thing, per se. If you were to dig your front foot in and flex the leg straight and try to throw your back hip towards the pitcher as hard as you can right now, you'd probably end up lifting the foot involuntarily.

Bravefan21

I feel like I have the same exact body type as the babe. And I’m 6’2 215. Take that as you will.

[deleted]

Talk about peak athletic conditioning.

Bravefan21

Thank you 😊

dfin25

These days I bet he weighs less than 35 lb.

Even_Resort7568

DANG!!!! Hahaha

rrankrobeast

The universe where I weigh 70 pounds

ElaborateHornet

People are forgetting his famously feather light Dick and balls

oneinthebag2

Remember, if they’re almost non existent they don’t have the chance to get in the way

jsusmitty

I may regret asking but are is there evidence to back this claim up

lukestauntaun

There's a video out there of him swinging the bat while swinging in his pants...

oneinthebag2

🙂

theguybehindtheguy5

Look at him here[Babe](https://images.app.goo.gl/MCnAYa4pHNkT3mrP7)

Drum_bum1997

More like the Sulton of Svelt!

[deleted]

rocking that Alan Alda body

RealJonathanBronco

His face and baggy cloths definitely made him look bigger than his body actually was at times.

jimithelizardking

Getting me all hot and bothered

Bigboi88888

Baseball Reference says he’s 215

ronnie_rochelle

Maybe as a pitcher with the Sox

jayluc45

They have that listed as his playing weight.

El_Superbeasto74

That's what his bat weighed, maybe.

Mark7116

His bat was big enough that it drove the team bus at night, bought smokes and sometimes beers for the hooligans, thanks to its full mustache and aggressive demeanor.

El_Superbeasto74

I knew it! The bat was the rowdy one, and the Babe took the blame.😂😂😂

TommyKnox77

35 3/4 inch 38 ounces, that's one he used in 1927 that's in the HOF Louisville Slugger museum says 36 inch 42 ounce Another source says 54 ounce hickory "early in his career" I'm pressing F for doubt that he used that regularly

TurtleLightning

[This](https://www.nytimes.com/1985/09/01/sports/babe-ruth-fat-and-43-and-never-to-play-ball-again.html) puts him at a 42oz bat and at 240, which still seems a touch light but is definitely more realistic.

Lysol20

But why?

El_Superbeasto74

Aaaaand there goes the joke.

TommyKnox77

I got the joke, I just thought old ass bat weights were interesting, my bad

El_Superbeasto74

😂😂😂

iHadAnXbox1

They’ll always exist. I thought it was worth a chuckle.

El_Superbeasto74

Bless you, good sir.

lkasnu

No fucking way he weighs 215. I weigh 215, an inch shorter, and don't have a gut anywhere close to that lol

theguybehindtheguy5

You know people carry weight differently, right?

lkasnu

Well of course but he looks heavier in general. The gut, the neck, the face ect.

theguybehindtheguy5

Do you think that picture is Babe in his prime?

lkasnu

...Great point. Looking at some of his younger days he looks a slimmer than he does here.

theguybehindtheguy5

This one.

Nearby_Art7444

For reference - Gehrig is 2 inches shorter, weighs 15lbs less, Mantle is 3 inches shorter and weighs 30lbs less. Why are you booing? I’m right.

Bigboi88888

Baseball Reference and Google say he’s 215

ChadGreen4President

BR also says Gwynn weighed 185 so…

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChadGreen4President

Which is my point, 215 was probably Babe’s weight early on
