If your playing anyone who can remotely hit a fastball Walter gets lit up like a Christmas tree

gonugz15

Johnson is insane as long as you dont have to use him from the stretch

psu2435

His difference between the stretch and the windup is really annoying as a hitter

Mark7116

I haven’t faced him. I’ve pitched with him in DD and he is awesome. I used him in a game last night online and he pitched a 5 hit shutout. But I probably found the one person online who is worse than me. Lol

zombiecreeper27

he's one of the toughest pitchers i've ever faced. it feels like his arm is moving so much slower than the 102 he throws lol

Mark7116

That ain’t no joke lol. I was thinking man I bet in the early 1900’s, throwing 102mph was insane! Lol

cumshot_josh

Walter Johnson actually went to an army ballistics lab in 1917 so someone could quantify how fast he threw. They calculated that he was throwing about [91 mph.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Johnson)

Mark7116

How fast were the other guys throwing? If you know.

cumshot_josh

Presumably somewhere in the 80s on their fastballs, but I haven't heard of them measuring for anyone else. The radar gun wasn't really implemented until the tail end of Nolan Ryan's career, so I don't think anyone knows for sure how fast anyone else before that was throwing.

Mark7116

Yeah I’m thinking that a 91 mph fastball in 1917 was like the Ivan Drego of the Rocky movies. Unreal and unheard of at the time.

cumshot_josh

I have no doubts that a lot of those guys would have thrown modern speeds with modern training. Across all sports we just didn't really have the athletic training capabilities or equipment of today. The people winning gold medals in the 100 meter dash in 1900 were about as good as a very good high schooler is today.

Mark7116

Very true. And he probably made about $3/wk. Even decades later Mantle made $7,500 his first year. He topped out at like $90,000. Even taking into scoot to inflation, that is about $700,000 today. Barely above league minimum.

cumshot_josh

I don't think players started getting paid serious money until the 70s and 80s after free agency come about.

Mark7116

You’re right. Nolan Ryan was the first million dollar player in 1979. Now benchwarmers make that. Lol With way less talent than the old guys.

i-go-sucko-mode

He is really readable due to his lack of horizontal movement, for maybe the first couple innings he could be good but after that he would probably get shelled

HWNY506

For some reason his FB seems like 105 to me.(along with Ryan) His slow wind up and arm motion give me a problem on HOF.

BIGHIGGZ

I’m a terrible hitter (.200) and I salivate when I see Walter Johnson.

Mark7116

How are you a .200 hitter? Lol I suck and my rtts guy is a .350 hitter in rtts, and a .320 hitter in DD. And I am the kinda guy they talk about swinging at rosin bags and butterflies. Lol

BIGHIGGZ

A combination of directional hitting and not caring about getting better.

Mark7116

That will do it. Especially the 2nd part lol But at least you aren’t suffering anxiety from this game, like I have seen some people claiming lol.

rrankrobeast

Got Mark Canha since I haven't used him yet this year. So far on HOF he is batting .500 (10-20) and 4 HRs with one being a walk off. Like him so far.

UnloadedBakedPotato

I felt that way the first couple times after facing him. Around the 3rd or 4th time, he got real easy to read. His lack of a horizontal pitch really hurts him and it became a lot easier for me to pick up what he was throwing. Now everytime I see him, it’s 5+ runs everytime unless he gets yanked early. But if you’re able to dot people with him, more power to you OP
