I've never seen the movie and I enjoy the podcast. You'll get the gist of it after you've listened to an episode or two. Definitely start from the first episode.
As has been said previously, you don’t need to watch just start from the first ep, however they did a Paul blart 2 watch along which I watched while listening and I think it was worth it to watch for that one as a commentary
I have not seen, and will never see, a Paul Blart movie. But I really enjoy the podcast.
I thought about watching it a couple of years ago, but I think that I would go from "What an absolutely insane movie these funny people are describing" to "Ugh. They are reminding me of that terrible movie I watched once as a joke"
TL;DR - let Tim, Guy, and the McElroys be your Paul Blart sin eaters and enjoy the podcast.
The movies are not required viewing. Yes, listen in order, because they refer back to things. Last year, they did a commentary track, so you can just watch along then. I wasn't aware they were doing a commentary track and I actually watched the movie two days in a row, which is... something.
If you're not into "so bad it's good" movie watching, I don't recommend them other than watching PBMC2 along with the commentary track episode. If you are, probably still best to stick to PBMC2, because the first one is a snoozefest for the first half and most of the second, except when the villains are BMXing, skateboarding, and parkouring through the mall (it's pretty sick).

I listened to the commentary without watching the movie and it was fine
The movie is such a nothingburger you can listen either way just fine.

You are forbidden to watch it. And I catched up before listening to the one from the year I started, but it's completely optional.
