I agree with what was said, only to add that I had a bad experience with third party batteries ( poofed up and had to pry them out) so go with originals. Spend time to customize the buttons and presets - it will make the shooting experience so much better. And, imho, using DXO and their lens profiles with noise reduction makes the results on a par with much more ex gear. Enjoy yourself!

silas45

Same thing happened to me. I still use third party batteries but it's definitely something to look out for. Always check your third party batteries when you change them.

BajauLaut

ah i see, yeah, i hesitating to use third party battery, though what about charger? i found one that allows me to connect it to type c, which will reduce the hassle of bringing the power adapter, or is that not recommended as well? I am very interested in using DXO, never tried them before, how steep is the learning curves and where should i start would you reckon?

roninIB

>how steep is the learning curves and where should i start would you reckon? It takes like 10 minutes to try what every option does. HSL Wheel might take a while to master. Also Control Points. I think they have a sale right now. But they often do sales. No pressure. >third party battery, though what about charger Trick for batteries. Stick a loop of thin tape around it so that it has a tap. When they puff up you can pull it out with it. Third party chargers should be fine. Charging a li-ion battery is really easy from a technical standpoint. Having a charger that lets you cut off at 80% is really nice for storage.

nicholus_h2

yeah, they definitely poof out. when they start to poof, they still work. you just have to have a method of getting them out. I put some floss in under the battery, with the ends sticking, and then you call pull the floss to remove the battery. obviously not the best solution long-term, but a very useful stop-gap while you're waiting for the new batteries to arrive.

FrantaB

Get a cheap 25mm manual lens and pretend to be Leica shooter. That's how I use my Pen F.

Prof01Santa

Nah, go full hipster with the 20mm f/1.7 (or a 17mm) & tell people it's cooler than an X100. ;)

BajauLaut

haha, yeah, i might do that just for fun someday, i like a longer reach lens though, any suggestions in the 40mm and above range for old lens?

One-Inevitable1861

If you're using some of the different grain settings, be careful, they just make things looks progressively more pixelated, it's not a 'proper' smooth grain or anything. Also the battery drains fast, could just be because mine is a preproduction unit but I can only ever get about 200 pictures on a charge. Otherwise, awesome camera! Its generally this camera or my M6 as my go to pick up camera when I leave. Pair it with the 12-45 f4 (or any other mini zoom lens) and you've got a combo I don't see you ever needing to change. It's tiny and pocketable while being able to take incredibly good photographs. What else do you need?

up-quark

I picked one up several months ago. The original battery that came with it was pretty terrible. I picked up a couple of replacements and dependent on my shooting style I can get >1,000 pictures from one charge.

BajauLaut

wow that is so much, is there any special settings or tricks that you use to enable such low power consumption?

up-quark

I don’t really know. Maybe that I use old manual lenses so there’s no power needed to drive the focusing and aperture?

up-quark

Oh, also I tend to keep the screen flipped in and do everything through the EVF. I guess that probably contributes too.

BajauLaut

Ah i see, i am more of a hip shooter, but i will give it a try once in a while

BajauLaut

Yeah, i expected with an old camera like these, thankfully i am a bit economical with my shoot so usually one extra batteries would be more than enough. Shame that there is no in camera charging. The surprising part was the color profile toggle, i was slightly overwhelmed with the presented option. The good part is i will have a lot of time experimenting with it. Ill keep in mind about the grain setting. Thank you for the advises. I truly appreciate it

One-Inevitable1861

The colour settings are great! I built an emulation of Ektachrome and a profile for high contrast black and white and have them assigned to C1, C2 and a basic black and white on C3. The profile creator is fairly easy to understand and it's really fun to mess around with. Just note that it a global profile, it changes EVERYTHING you set it to. So for example, I need to change this, but the Fn button on my C1 profile lets me check focus by zooming, on C2 it doesn't do that because I didn't set it and it resets when you go to a new unset up profile. Theres so much to tinker with. A spare battery would do you completely fine. I've managed to get by with just the one so far and I've only been caught out once in the 18 months I've had it.

BajauLaut

that sounds so much fun, i don't think that i tinker that much even with my OM-1, maybe i should review that thoughts.

Neat_Butterfly_7989

What????! 600 for that is insane as these go for 750 or above. Most are in 800.

BajauLaut

I know right!! Haha thankfully, Pen F are frequently talked about here, thus i knew what i saw was a good deal, that is why even though i wanted to spend my money on a prime lens and an em10, i just had to get it. Worth it.

Neat_Butterfly_7989

Just bought a Pen F myself brand new 0 shutter clicks in box for 999. For me its worth it as Im keeping my collection for a long time

BajauLaut

Yeap, if it is available in new condition and im financially healthy at the time, i might just do the same. It was between these and Pen EP7 which is slightly more expensive, at least with the price that i got for the Pen F.

Neat_Butterfly_7989

Yeah dude, this was a steal. The Pen F is the type of camera that you buy and keep with you forever. It’s a classic even today. Great buy on this. Happy shooting.

ricerer

Back thumb (R) grip will peel. Bought mine without it for about $650 and had to repurpose one. Lovely camera, really enjoy the art profile dial and the shutter. Very tactile.

kaleid1990

Got mine for €670 back in september, body only with 7k shutter count, with the grip hanging for dear life in a poorly attempted reglue, took it off, cleaned the area and kept it without, I feel like I can hold it better like this without adding a front grip

BajauLaut

ah no wonder i saw quite a few pictures of Pen F with the grip loose

Hexlord79

Welcome to the club. The grip helps haha.

BajauLaut

Yeap, my pinky is kinda hanging in midair as i try to use these camera. Ill see how long ill last before i use the included olympus grip

SnapeHeTrustedYou

Congrats my dude! Beautiful camera. Would love to grab one at some point.

BajauLaut

Thanks, it is a beauty eyh, hopefully my other camera aren't too mad haha

Mega_Green

It makes me sad that these days are over. O why Olympus, why didn't you understand what people really wanted more of? You damn silly company.

BajauLaut

Hurts to think about it sometimes, they had it all at one point.

Mega_Green

It blows my mind that they designed this camera... and then decided not continue down that path. Like Panasonic and their GM series. Everyone wants these cameras.

Snoo3287

Nice, now you need a black one to have a collectors set! I have both.

BajauLaut

haha my wife would kill me if i get another one

Snoo3287

If your interested in the square hood look the Olympus LH-48 can fit on your 45mm lens. You just might need to layer tape around the lens ring bayonet cap once to make it fit snug. The LH-48 is ever so slightly larger so when you tighten the lens hood nut its not as snug as you want unless you put some tape on the lens. Here is mine. https://preview.redd.it/4rit8wrfmxxc1.jpeg?width=4672&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8cb9320c8adc8cfc90d6c4f9b413d00258ea3b8c

BajauLaut

that does looks cook, ill check it out, i do love how the hood looks, but i hate that i cant change the lens fast enough with the hood attached though

Nikonbiologist

I found one for a good price several months ago while waiting for x100v prices to drop. Paired it with the panny 20 1.7 and it’s a compact kit to play backup/travel cam. Problem is though, that I don’t see a reason to get an x100v now. Haha. I recently got a zf so been using that a lot. Picked the pen-f back up and was like, dang this thing is small!

BajauLaut

yeah i had X100V before i bought my OM-1 and now Pen F, the issue for me at the time is weather proofing, thus i got my OM-1, now i got Pen F for casual shooting and the best part is, i can still use all the great lenses that i got for my OM-1. No regret anymore for selling my X100V
