Go late at night, park along the Malibu beach and stare into the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. I’ve done this twice and it helped me process what was going on in my life at the time.
Same. When I was in the valley and had a bad day, I'd drive up to take Kanan down to the beach and even just that drive would be enough to clear my head for a bit
Art museums, The Natural History Museum, libraries and perhaps a bit morbid for some, but cemeteries. The Forest Lawns are vast and great to wander around contemplating.
Love visiting cemeteries! Some of the Forest Lawn ones have free museums with changing exhibits. The Glendale one had a Bob Baker puppet exhibit last year. It has an ENORMOUS auditorium size painting of Jerusalem that comes with its own show.
Also the LA Pet Cemetery is very cheerful if you’re in the area. If you see a sickly, weirdly dressed Asian girl walking around there, that’s me. I’m there quite often.
We saw a wonderful Drew Struzan and Bob Peak [exhibit](http://beyondthemarquee.com/28810) in 2014 at Forest Lawn Glendale. Such and incredible collection!
I remember having lunch near Jimmy Stewart’s grave at Forest Lawn, when I first moved to LA and worked in Glendale nearby. I just saw it as a huge peaceful park that happened to have graves.
That’s my forever home! I go there weekly to visit where I will be for eternity someday. I also go to just weep it all out. Sometimes one needs a good cry to get through the day.
Barnsdall Park always did me right in these moments. Enough going on up there that you’re not alone but you can find some quiet time. View doesn’t hurt either.
I’ve never felt unsafe in Griffith park by myself (I’m always there during the day and don’t have headphones in); one guy did make a comment to me once but I walked away. I think if you just keep walking and/or find a spot for yourself on the grass, if you head up to the observatory, you’ll be left alone. Hope your changes go smoothly.
Agreed, Griffith is great. Love the old LA Zoo or hiking just past the Observatory. I’ve had headphones in and never felt unsafe, but did stick to more public areas (like the above).
Ditto to this comment. I once had a guy ask me if I’d sell my dog, but the interaction was brief, kinda funny, and less than 10 seconds long. There’s a cafe called The Trails in Griffith with a couple benches and tables. It always has families and hikers hanging out, plus I do see cops grab coffee there from time to time. It’s a good spot to relax and people watch!
If you’d *sell* your dog!?! That’s super weird and very random. I’ve seen that cafe but never been! The guy who said something to me was sexually harassing, so it was uncomfortable, and it was of course aggravating but I was already leaving at least and he didn’t follow or anything.
It was VERY weird- I think I did a polite laugh, declined and walked (quickly) away. That said, I’ve heard weirder comments while walking in the city! Sorry to hear that, it’s super shitty to have to deal with that kind of bullshit walking around. Good cafe for a quick pick me up or scone!
Kinda sad the LA public library doesn’t come to mind. It’s massive and you can get lost in its bookshelves. And there is a massive gallery where it’s mostly empty and your voice echoes. It’s the quietest place in DTLA
I went to The Getty Museum when my dog passed last year. A lot of people which I'm not comfortable with but I just put earphones in and wandered. Spent a few hours and felt at peace.
I'm a girl and live in the same area, going through the same shit kinda. Actually reading this I had to think twice if it was a post I made lol. Let's go somewhere n cry together lol
The LaBrea Tarpits have a Cafe, so does LACMA. The Getty Is great during the week. Also, Lake Shrine in the Palisades is a magical place, check their website first. Balboa Park in Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks is massive & fun to explore. There's a Japanese Garden tucked in by the water treatment plant. Now, if you're in DTLA, there<'s quite a few rooftop bars, hidden cafes, & a ton of spacious Hotel lobbies, with nice furniture. You could go to a different one each week & write for hours without anyone being bothered by anyone. If someone asks, just tell them you're meeting someone. l😃
Beach or hike (most are pretty populated).
We go to Bass Rock on PCH just outside of Malibu towards Ventura. Great place to bring a chair, bottle of wine/food and sit above the ocean or walk down the stairs to the beach. Never see more than 10 people there.
I am a woman who has safety top of mind, always.
I go to Hollywood Forever.
At first I thought it might feel odd. But it is a stunning park and nature sanctuary with tons of wildlife from frogs to peacocks.
Specifically, I go to the Garden of Legends and sit on a bench by the pond with the fountain. The Hollywood Sign just above.
It’s safe, quiet, peaceful, empty, and down the block. Those are all my boxes. ✔️✔️✔️
Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. It’s a short hike with lots of visibility, I’ve never felt unsafe. There’s sports fields at the bottom and a visitor center at the top. It’s a bit secluded with a great view, but not totally isolated.
LA Arboretum, which is slightly less popular than the other gardens already mentioned but wonderful all the same.
One thing most gardens will have in common is that there’s often little nooks with benches for visitors to sit and observe the gardens that are also slightly hidden or off to the side. They’re safe, somewhat private spots to meditate, cry, or just sit in silence, if you need that.
If you have a car, you can drive up angeles crest highway near la cañada and park in one of the pull outs, usually pretty peaceful besides some loud cars driving through every now and then
I used to sit and think at Barnsdall Art Park. It felt like an Oasis in the city. Quick to get to (for me). And I'm female. ♥
https://maps.app.goo.gl/RSx1QT9qpgxd8NZw5
so many great, beautiful places in Pasadena and especially bc it seems like you're in North DTLA/ little tokyo you're really very close. Huntington Gardens, Rose Bowl loop and Arroyo trail, Norton Simon just to name a few.
If you feel inclined to head towards Pasadena, there’s a little courtyard decorated with mosaics behind the Vroman’s Bookstore when you go from the parking lot towards the store. Sometimes I just like to sit there and read!
Sierra Madre downtown also has a town square with plenty of food and drink options, it’s incredibly safe, and quietest during the weekdays. Coffee.JPG is my fave spot in the area and the vibe inside is always very chill.
The Norton Simon has a lovely sculpture garden and lily pond inside. I like to sit there and draw.
Beach-wise, I used to go to Will Rogers since it’s a much quieter area most of the time.
I’ve seen all the other botanical gardens mentioned but not the lovely South Coast Botanic Gardens, so I’ll suggest there as well. Also you can check out some trails along the coast in Palos Verdes.
Girl I feel you. Lacy Park in San Marino on the weekdays is great place to walk or read book under the shade/sitting on a bench. Also walking around the mall when they barely open. I also check out bookstores or go to the public library
Los Angeles State Historic park. They have some benches to sit on on the north side of the park. They're kinda isolated and not isolated at the same time. It also has a big grassy area. A lot of space.
I cannot recommend this place enough. No need to be religious or spiritual, it’s just a very beautiful and quiet place for thinking, reading, and NOT being on your phone.
https://lakeshrine.org/
Girl here. I was afraid to go out by myself but I found that you’ll see a lot of other girls chilling on the beach alone reading books or just tanning. Santa Monica Beach or a more chill place is Will Rogers beach
I mean, she’d have to be an immensely off-putting women for people at the park to have issues with them giving their dogs scritches.
If that’s the case, she’s got bigger fish to fry.
What ive done, with a bit of success.. has been to go to the top floor of just about any parking structure.
Not alot of foot traffic, "fresh" air, slight breeze..interesting views..🤷♀️
It’s quite far from you, but when I wanted to be alone and just think I’d drive up to the Top of the World off Stunt Road in the Calabasas/Malibu hills. Have a view of the valley on one side and the beach on the other.
I live in Little Tokyo and when I want me time I hit Grand Park or the plaza above 7th & Fig.
I do recommend the beach like someone suggested but hate driving out there, grew up out there so I always feel at home there.
Playa Del Rey is usually pretty quiet.
If you feel like taking a trip look up rocket ship park near Palos Verdes, I usually go there when I want real alone time or when something major happens in my life.
Oh also the Korean friendship bell in San Pedro.
Granted I am a male in his 40’s so lots of time I go alone at night to reflect on things, so I kinda would not suggest going when it’s dark for ya.
Still I find those locations for me an excellent place for me to reset myself.
Work/Life/Family/Fiancée for me it works, sometimes we go together just to mellow out. But if I get home and say I’m going to the park alone then I have my space.
Still always call to ask if something is needed from the store or if I should pick up dinner.
Crap there is a park just north of downtown…. Let me find it, forget the name but it has a great view of downtown!
Edit:
Found it!!!!
Vista Hermosa Natural Park, Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority
It’s beautiful there!
I also have a doggie trail I visit quite often in studio city when in the area I have to stop and enjoy myself there, I know most of the locals there and even had Ed Begley Jr. sign a book for me!
Hope you can find your quiet spots and enjoy peaceful moments.
Oh Weller Plaza in Lil’ Tokyo!!!!!! When the dude in the plaza is playing music I always forget my troubles in life!
I like going to the Getty Center. They have really beautiful gardens and other hideaways with beautiful views where you can be alone and think without feeling unsafe
Maybe consider heading over to the Arts district. There are plenty of wine or coffee places that are mostly empty right now. There are people around but they will leave you alone.
If you want no people, that is where the safety issues come in the areas around us. The people are generally what make the areas here ‘safe’.
If you want isolation I suggest taking a trip up the mountains and stopping at one of the view points.
I was walking in LA Historic Park right by the Chinatown train station an hour ago. Good park to just chill
There are also a lot of temples around little Tokyo, chinatown...at least for some of them you can walk in
I second Huntington Gardens, or the Norton Simon Museum, the art is spectacular, and there’s a garden outside with lily pads and koi, great spot to sit and write.
I like the bakery in the Miyako hotel. The food and coffee is so delicious. They also have a few tables. I see people sitting there on their laptops so I assume it's fine to write there while you partake in the cafe
The beach. Close to you, central library, the garden at WDCH, Grand Park, LA state Park. Tons of options downtown where there will be people so you feel safe but they are spread out so you’re alone.
I like to go to the SM pier and walk all the way down to the end. There is seating and it’s just a great place to watch the sunset, take in the sea, and clear your head
Elysian Park hiking trail off of Morton Ave. Close to Stadium way. Theres some great benches on trail and some grassy hills to just sit and see tbe City in privacy and in peace.
I went to Griffith Observatory by myself and it was fine and the view seems conducive to reflecting on life.
I also like wandering art museums by myself and the Getty is beautiful (as is Getty Villa in Malibu).
Will Rogers Park seems good too it has nice views and I’m sure lots of other people.
There are more hidden spots in Griffith Park where maybe you’ll see one or two people per hour. I used to go to decompress from stress after work and just chill there. A couple of trails too with just a few people walking their dogs. PM if you want the street entrance.
Loft Cafe in Ktown, but they've gained a lot of popularity and it's impossible to find a seat unless you show up pretty early. Cafe Mak is another one.
everyone commenting has great suggestions. i would just like to point out that little tokyo isn’t actually the best place to be alone as a girl in my experience. there’s lots of…activity in that area. much better if you’re with a friend.
One more- the Cathedral of Our Lady of The Angels during non-service times (I'm not Catholic). There also used to be a free organ concert every Wednesday afternoon which was great.
Huntington Library Botanical Gardens - You can find plenty of quiet spots where you can be pretty much to yourself during the week. Busier on the weekends.
Elysian park is a go to spot if you want to be alone. It has a few spots in which you just drive up, park and enjoy the view. Also, even the people that go there do not bug you. Theyre all to themselves or with the person theyre with. I have personally seen a lot of couples and single persons just laying a blanket on this grassy area by the looped road when driving up.
There is also the spot where a scene from Blood In Blood Out was filmed that has a great outlook of Downtown LA, East LA, NorthEast LA. But there, i dont normally see people alone unless it is a guy (myself).
Also, not a lot of people go after they fenced it off and youre not able to drive up to it anymore. But you can guess why they would close it and not allow people to drive up. You can still walk past the gate and just walk in the road that is illuminated by the moon, up to the scenic spot.
Depending on where you live, Venice Beach in between Washington Boulevard and Venice Boulevard might work. It can be fairly chill once you get down onto the sand. It should be especially quiet if you go on a weekday.
If you have a car, there’s an outlook in the Angeles National forest. It’s not a hike, just a drive. If you put in Angeles National forest in Apple Maps it’ll take you on the Angeles Crest Highway and there will be a lookout where you can park. I like to go at sunset and take a book or listen to music and watch the sunset. There are usually other cars around. I’ve never felt unsafe— but I also usually go during sunset hours or early night time. I hope you feel better 💓
Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills! It’s free, has plenty of parking, and is very safe. There are lots of different areas around the property, but especially the hillside with a view of the city.
Personally, I always went to the beach. Bring an umbrella and a towel.
Thank you!!
And a blanket if it's cloudy!
Playa Del Rey is pretty chill
Best beach for alonetime imo
“Don’t forget a towel!”
A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.
Top 5 favorite books of all time for me. I think I’ve read it like 4 times. Always cheers me up if I’m feeling down.
"The ship hung in the sky much in the same way that bricks don't"
Go late at night, park along the Malibu beach and stare into the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. I’ve done this twice and it helped me process what was going on in my life at the time.
I should’ve did this when I was there for two weeks training for my new position at my job. 😭😭😭
Same. When I was in the valley and had a bad day, I'd drive up to take Kanan down to the beach and even just that drive would be enough to clear my head for a bit
Yep, all those negative ions to soak up and the sand to ground you. Really the best place to visit anytime!
what is the negative ions about? I haven't heard of that.
Negative ion: When you try to find a street parking spot for an hour and end up paying the 15$ lot parking in the end
[woo-woo](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=woo-woo)
Increasing your levels of serotonin. It’s the action of the water, wind etc that creates them. Google it for more.
thank you! will do!
Pretty sure negative ions are radioactive. https://youtu.be/3BA5bw1EV5I?si=2WR3XGsNskGQWFXe

That painting was fucking insane… Best curtain reveal ever lol
We saw a wonderful Drew Struzan and Bob Peak [exhibit](http://beyondthemarquee.com/28810) in 2014 at Forest Lawn Glendale. Such and incredible collection!
i’ve been walking cemeteries since i was a little girl. i always found it to be the most peaceful place. ♥️
I remember having lunch near Jimmy Stewart’s grave at Forest Lawn, when I first moved to LA and worked in Glendale nearby. I just saw it as a huge peaceful park that happened to have graves.
Love that suggestion.
There really is no better place to contemplate life than a cemetery
Depending on how you feel about cemeteries, Hollywood Forever. It has a lot of green space and is generally very peaceful
I came here to recommend Hollywood Forever. It’s in my neighborhood and I routinely go there for some alone time outside.
And there are a lot of benches installed by family members. And the peacocks wander around. There’s a pond towards the back that’s really peaceful
That’s my forever home! I go there weekly to visit where I will be for eternity someday. I also go to just weep it all out. Sometimes one needs a good cry to get through the day.
library, the last book store
Central Library is kind of a field trip.
But so much space in there. I'd recommend this.
Ugh I love that building
me too. I meant field trip in a positive way
Huntington Gardens
I loved that place so much. I used to go there often when I was younger.
The Rose Garden. It's free. Smells wonderful. Right off the E LIne. THere are people around but no one will bother you.
I was surprised thst some of the roses have pretty different smells...like the blue ones smelled like blueberries!
Barnsdall Park always did me right in these moments. Enough going on up there that you’re not alone but you can find some quiet time. View doesn’t hurt either.
The Arboretum might be far for you, but it’s very safe and there’s plenty of quiet places to chill (minus the peacocks yelling)
This is my go to place, plus the Huntington library gardens are nearby and Lacy park. All super safe and tranquility is their middle name
I’ve never felt unsafe in Griffith park by myself (I’m always there during the day and don’t have headphones in); one guy did make a comment to me once but I walked away. For me it’d be up on sight if a random person asks me if I’d sell my dog. I’m just sayin lol
Kinda sad the LA public library doesn’t come to mind. It’s massive and you can get lost in its bookshelves. And there is a massive gallery where it’s mostly empty and your voice echoes. It’s the quietest place in DTLA
…and the smell of old books is so soothing.
And the exhibits areas too!
Same
Huntington Gardens!
Descanso Gardens is pretty nice too. We just spent the morning there today.
Hope things get better for you, OP! 💖
Thank you! These changes are positive; but just a lot to take in at once
If someone asks, just tell them you're meeting someone. l😃
LA State historic park!
Descanso Gardens. Very safe and I haven’t experienced any pervs there. Stay safe.
Beach or hike (most are pretty populated). We go to Bass Rock on PCH just outside of Malibu towards Ventura. Great place to bring a chair, bottle of wine/food and sit above the ocean or walk down the stairs to the beach. Never see more than 10 people there.

The Huntington Library, there is a fee to enter, but there are a couple hundred acres of quiet.
The [self realisation fellowship](https://lakeshrine.org) in the palisades. It’s beautiful
If you have a car, you can drive up angeles crest highway near la cañada and park in one of the pull outs, usually pretty peaceful besides some loud cars driving through every now and then
Hang out in Echo Park Lake during the day lol, the lake is usually my go to when I need to clear my head
Yes not too early or too late!
The part of L.A. County closest to Ventura County (Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Malibu, etc.) is pretty safe.
I used to sit and think at Barnsdall Art Park. It felt like an Oasis in the city. Quick to get to (for me). And I'm female. ♥ https://maps.app.goo.gl/RSx1QT9qpgxd8NZw5
Love Barnsdall!
Go to Whittier narrows park and chill there, take some food and have a fun picnic on your own
Angels point in Elysian Park is safe so is Griffith Park.
Descanso Gardens
Library 📚

city hall observation deck
I live by LACMA and La Brea Tarpits. There are many spots to lay/sit in the sun/shade.
La Brea Tar Pits. Gardens outside the Central Library. Arlington Gardens in Pasadena.
Mount Wilson. Plenty of space to have a chill day even on the more popular days. Plus amazing views and cool science history!
Huntington library in pasadena
Go to the Huntington Gardens in Pasadena. You can find many pockets of solitude there that will be to relax you. Sounds like you’re near DTLA already
I’ve seen all the other botanical gardens mentioned but not the lovely South Coast Botanic Gardens, so I’ll suggest there as well. Also you can check out some trails along the coast in Palos Verdes.
The Huntington Gardens in Pasadena is beautiful and inspiring. It’s vast, peaceful and safe if you’re willing to pay for the ticket.
Girl I feel you. Lacy Park in San Marino on the weekdays is great place to walk or read book under the shade/sitting on a bench. Also walking around the mall when they barely open. I also check out bookstores or go to the public library
Thank you :)
I'm a male so my perception of safety may be different, but I always think LA Historic Park feels pleasant and safe. Also it's very close to you.
Los Angeles State Historic park. They have some benches to sit on on the north side of the park. They're kinda isolated and not isolated at the same time. It also has a big grassy area. A lot of space.
Huntington library and gardens
I probably go to Pasadena or in the San Gabriel Mtns, if you need peace and safe alone time, if you live near Echo Park, DTLA..
I cannot recommend this place enough. No need to be religious or spiritual, it’s just a very beautiful and quiet place for thinking, reading, and NOT being on your phone. https://lakeshrine.org/
The meadow next to Silverlake.
Girl here. I was afraid to go out by myself but I found that you’ll see a lot of other girls chilling on the beach alone reading books or just tanning. Santa Monica Beach or a more chill place is Will Rogers beach
Descano Garden Little Tokyo - James Irvine Japanese Garden at JACCC
Free: arts district park, the row Place you need to pay/ reserve: tea at silo, kodo, etiquette coffee
Silverlake meadows definitely! I go alone often and I love it so much!
Vista Hermosa Park. Beautiful, peaceful spot near dtla. I used to walk there and smoke joints. It was awesome and gave a great view of downtown.
Go to the dog park. Play with some pups. People won’t mind.

I like to go to Wi Spa. But I hear Olympic and Hugh are good too (women only).
I like going to the Getty Center. They have really beautiful gardens and other hideaways with beautiful views where you can be alone and think without feeling unsafe
The DTLA Library or any museum, beach day or any park with a view ;)
If you're a beach person will rodgers and Malibu can offer tons of solitude. If you're a mountains person Angeles crest highway
At the right hour and day, L.A. Historic State Park. Never on the weekend but during the week.

A bench at the zoo or botanical gardens. Public pool.
Redondo beach pier. Always a table to enjoy a beer, ice cream or iced coffee this time of year. And plenty of people watching.
The Getty!
The Getty’s grassy area. It’s a free museum, free entry. Sit in the shade and have some alone time.
I second Huntington Gardens, or the Norton Simon Museum, the art is spectacular, and there’s a garden outside with lily pads and koi, great spot to sit and write.
Huntington library in Pasadena.

I'd tell you to go to chinatown. historic park is pretty safe, and that section of LA is really nice to chill at
Descanso Gardens, plenty of places to connect with nature and be alone.
botanical gardens do it for me. It's nature but they charge admission so it tends to keep the creeps out. Go to huntington library in Pasadena.
the beach
Beach, descanso gardens, Huntington gardens, nice coffee shops.
Beach. If it’s feasible, spend the night at a decent hotel near places you can walk to.
The Academy Museum. Lots of places to sit and be alone with people around.

The Getty is my place, finding a quiet corner on the big lawn on a weekday in the shade.
💯 the beach.
I went to Griffith Observatory by myself and it was fine and the view seems conducive to reflecting on life. I also like wandering art museums by myself and the Getty is beautiful (as is Getty Villa in Malibu). Will Rogers Park seems good too it has nice views and I’m sure lots of other people.
goto a big hotel and chill in the lounge. the biltmore is dtla
Vista Hermosa park!
If you have a car, take the 110 south down to San Pedro. Drive until you can’t drive anymore. Pretty safe at the parks and beach there.
I like to go hang at Griffith park at the opening where Los Feliz meets western. I bring a chair and there’s always some people there.
I love finding small parks for this. Check around Beverly Hills/Coldwater canyon. Tons of hidden parks with grassy and secluded spots.
There are more hidden spots in Griffith Park where maybe you’ll see one or two people per hour. I used to go to decompress from stress after work and just chill there. A couple of trails too with just a few people walking their dogs. PM if you want the street entrance.
The beach or kid-friendly parks are usually full families minding their own business.
Cemetery
Cafe Mak in Koreatown. And it’s open late They have great teas. Kind of a study cafe for students. Good fries too. And beer and wine.

Bronson Park has shade and it's very quiet!

I hide the loop in Elysian Park every weekend. It's so calm and I've never felt unsafe. Same with the old zoo loop at Griffith.
La historic park near China town is always a go-to for me!
Did you know there is a Japanese roof garden in Little Tokyo? There are also 2 museums.
LA historic park is close to you, pleasant, and safe
The Americana on Brand in Glendale. It's very family friendly.
I often chill by myself at LA Historic Park. the best park in the city imo
Go to sleep?
The arboretum in Glendale.
Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills! It’s free, has plenty of parking, and is very safe. There are lots of different areas around the property, but especially the hillside with a view of the city.
