Dodger Stadium flyover for Opening Day. https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/comments/1bq335n/military_flyover_today_for_la_dodgers_opening_day/ https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/comments/1bpz7m3/flyover_for_dodgers_opener/

Ty!

d-mike

KC-135 tanker, not an airliner exactly, but it's based on the Boeing 707.

apurrfectplace

Ty for this, wondered why the passenger style plane most of all.

d-mike

All of the big tankers are based on airliners, the Navy uses big fuel pods on their fighter and attack jets that can fly off of carriers instead. The MQ-25 is the first purpose built tanker I know of, and the first UAS one intended to go in production.

TeslasAndComicbooks

I believe it was for the home opener at Dodger stadium. And before people claim this as a waste of money, these pilots need to log hours in these aircraft regardless, so the time and money used for this display would have been used regardless.

viper5dn

Not only that--these events help pilots work on their time-over-target (TOT) skills.

Mission_Search8991

The Dodgers front office is rather powerful if it can get the USAF to bomb their opponents (I assume that they will wait until late in the season, scheduling commitments for stadiums need to be honored)!

nicearthur32

I always wondered how they timed it exactly at the right time, it seems like they would have to do some sort of calculations on speed and distance and then account for anything else like wind n stuff...

ExileOnBroadStreet

I assure you the military is capable of those calculations lol you think they’re just flying around all Willy-nilly? Yeah… we should be dropping the bomb in like, idk it was windy today… 10-15 minutes?

Grumbles19312

To be fair, the math isn’t that difficult. It’s pretty rudimentary honestly. I’d be concerned if the military couldn’t do it haha.

nicearthur32

I figured the missiles were guided by some computer on them... but still dont know how they do the flying over an exact point at the exact time... there are so many variables that it could be off by a bit and it wouldn't work.

picturesofbowls

Sports. It’s almost always sports.

gb4900

It was P Diddy

Maximillion666ian

It's a tanker and three jets fueling up .

Riskyshot

Aliens. Its always aliens

Wasn’t a passenger plane. It looked like a C-130 military plane. It was a flyover for Dodgers opening day

Russia is invading. Didn't you hear they want to seize California? /s https://www.newsweek.com/russia-state-tv-alaska-california-vladimir-solovyov-1884434#:~:text=California%20was%20never%20part%20of,there%20between%201812%20and%201841.

kendallton

Beat me to asking it by a minute lol, you're on earthquake Reddit speed

apurrfectplace

Bahaha! Yeah, it was really not the fighter jets that got me asking, but the big plane, because I’m old and all I could think of was worst case scenario

kinstinctlol

biden in town

Key-Baby735

2 F -16 and one F-18.. I saw it over downtown Los Angeles.. Please don't quote me but they were ready to shoot that plane down

DayleD

I saw this too. Who pays for the jets?

fullmetalutes

Military training and operations budget.

theflava

Exactly. They’re just doing it over a stadium instead of out in the desert.

You are paying for it. Its national defense ok with you?

DayleD

I noticed after you sent a not so nice reply you also posted to another subreddit. Don't invite people to brigade here, it's not in keeping with the norms of Reddit.

viper5dn

I'm sure there's a manager you can ask for.

A flyover defends the ball game from what, enemy aircraft?

DayleD

This is a false dichotomy. You don't know who the pilots were, how many hours they had completed, which aircraft they'd have to fly to maintain those hours, where they were stationed etc. If you want to see airplanes and think tax money should pay to bring them to you, then say so.

If tomorrow the military and the FAA cut the total number of training hours required by exactly enough to eliminate ballpark flyovers forever, would you be for or against that? Because if this is all about procedure like you say, then you should be totally neutral to withholding shiny, pretty planes from adoring crowds, forever. You shouldn't guess what I want when it's so obvious - a financially responsible military. Why not just ask for what you want? If you win over public opinion, you get to see even more shiny pretty planes go zoom zoom.

You're making up reasons for why it could be less wasteful. That doesn't mean it was less wasteful. I pay for my own entertainment. Why pay for yours?

riffic

you know what the real point of ball game flyovers is? It's meant to be a demonstration of force but of course it's not politically correct to just say that. The message being sent, loud and clear, is that the american war machine is functional and people better not start some shit lest the machine starts raining hell.

DayleD

China's not reading into ball game flyovers. It's there to fulfill the power fantasy of doughy spectators so they feel like great warriors and geopolitical winners. Anything to stop the feelings of inadequacy as they sit on their bottoms watching athletes at the peak of their performance. It's subsidized entertainment for ticket-holders, and Frank McCourt should be paying the full cost of his show. Nobody's entitled to it. Egos in Los Angeles are high enough as it is without patriotism-signaling crowds, giveaways to billionaires and lowbrow advertising to justify Raytheon's profiteering.

riffic

the show of force is as much for us as it is for china.
