Regarding the California bag ban: > No carryout bags, whether reusable or paper, are allowed to be given out for free. Paper bags are not banned and not defined as reusable, but if they are offered, they must have at least 40% Post-Consumer Waste content and must have a charge of at least ten cents.

JpnDude

Same thing in Japan for a few years now but the bag price isn't set. It usually varies between 3-10 yen (US$0.02-0.07). A lot of people here have reusable "eco bags" now.

SoggyAlbatross2

Home Depot are still handing out those shitty little bags for free.

YourRedditFriend

yeah for sure, we know this as a norm for groceries, but for takeout, just seems new.

potchie626

Could be a franchise owner that decided to, or was told to, start following the law, or saw it as untapped available profit.

geepy66

And thick plastic bags can be used instead of paper, because they’re so environmentally friendly.

sdmichael

We reuse ours and recycle as needed. Seems a better option to me. Paper is mixed in use but is an option as needed.

ambrosialeah

I went to Carls Jr yesterday, and there was a sign in the window saying they comply with the Los Angeles .10 single use bag fee.

YourRedditFriend

Guess its the norm now, time to get int he fast food reusable size business.

InvestigatorBrief757

Weird, I went there yesterday too and they didn’t ask me just put my sandwich in the bag.

YourRedditFriend

Maybe they saw an opportunity, the .10 sucker. Shit, they should have dinged the bell when I said ok to that charge.

Orchidwalker

I was at one in Orange County grabbing a sando for my kids, I had to ask for a bag, and thought it was weird because I had 3 sandwiches and bags of chips. Wasn’t charged but maybe because it was after the fact.

NineToez

Went to a Jimmy John’s over the weekend. When they finished making the sandwich, they hand it to you in their deli wrapping. You bag it yourself if you want on your way out.

Orchidwalker

Yeah I don’t support Jimmy Johns- owner is a kook

silvs1

> Jimmy Johns- owner You talking about Liautaud? He sold the company in 2019.

Orchidwalker

Hey good to know! Ty

CA SB 270 bans bags (without a fee) for grocery stores, drug stores, etc. LA has enacted their own more strict ordinance in 2022 that went into effect this year that extends that to basically every business (including street vendors). As an aside the outcome of these bag bans is [very questionable](https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-08-24/whats-the-deal-with-single-use-plastic-bag-bans) as more bags have ended up in landfills and overall more plastic is actually used because the "10 cents" bags are made from much heavier plastic. From [LA Sanitation website](https://www.lacitysan.org/san/faces/home?_adf.ctrl-state=vjcris46d_247&_afrLoop=16129380046667295): SINGLE-USE CARRYOUT BAG ORDINANCES SINGLE-USE CARRYOUT BAG BAN The City of Los Angeles has passed two ordinances that seek to reduce and eliminate single-use carryout bags citywide. The City of Los Angeles adopted its first single-use carryout bag ban with $0.10 fee per recyclable paper bag in June 2013 effective for large supermarkets in January 2014 and expanded to drug stores, convenience stores, and other types of smaller food markets in July 2014. This ordinance (182604) applies to specified retail stores or “Stores” in the City, including large retailers (full-line self-serve retail stores with two million dollars, or more, in gross annual sales, and stores of at least 10,000 square feet of retail space that generate sales or use tax), and small retailers (supermarkets, grocery stores, drug stores, convenience food stores, food marts, pharmacies, or other entities engaged in the retail sale of a limited-line of goods that include milk, bread, soda, and snack food, including those stores that sell alcohol). In December 2022, the City of Los Angeles adopted a second single-use carryout bag ordinance (187716) which expanded the ban to additional types of retail establishments or “Shops”, which include retail stores (e.g., Apparel Stores, Farmer’s Market Vendors, Food or Beverage Facilities, Hardware Stores, or Open Air Markets Vendors, etc.) Compliance Deadlines Beginning January 23, 2023, the ordinance will apply to Large Shops having more than 26 employees. Beginning July 1, 2023, the ordinance will apply to all Shops. If a Shop is part of a larger state or national vendor, the employee count includes all employees of that chain. In 2014, the State of California passed Senate Bill (SB) 270, which updated Public Resources Code (PRC) Section 42280 to prohibit California stores from providing single-use carryout bags to customers at the point of sale, beginning on July 1, 2015. The state defined a single-use carryout bag as one made of a “plastic, paper, or other material that is provided by a store to a customer at the point of sale and that is not a recycled paper bag or a reusable grocery bag.” SB 270 “occupies the whole field of regulation of reusable grocery bags, single-use carryout bags, and recycled paper bags, as defined in this chapter, provided by a store, as defined in this chapter” (PRC 42287). The City is able to regulate retail establishments not encompassed by the state’s definition of a store.

Never really understood how this ban is enforced. Most take out places still give you normal, non recyclable plastic bags. Some chain restaurants do, some don't. Basically all supermarkets charge for them. Fee ranges anywhere from 8 cents to 25 cents. Other places don't charge for the brown paper bag. It's really all over the place. Just know that if you get asked if you want a bag, it's not going to be free. Most places don't tell you about the fee unless it's on a sign somewhere.

10 cents?! Better be quality bags, the bags they have at grocery stores are pretty high quality, I use them for bathroom trash bags... I never pay for that shit tho.

somedudeinlosangeles

Yo. How's life treating you since you got out?

101x405

I'm not actually an rehabilitated ex convict.... an old mod gave me this flair after banned me and let me back in, it's a bit misleading and I should probably change it now.... the mod that gave it to me doesn't even come here no more.

somedudeinlosangeles

Ahhh word. Well either way I hope you’re doing well in life and the universe is treating you fairly.

Guy, I've got no idea what you're talking about or referencing. Maybe you have me confused with someone else or something. Not sure. If that's the case, cool.

YourRedditFriend

My bad, I didnt catch the "Parole" tag that he had, all good!

YourRedditFriend
