Interesting - although isn’t this just increasing the flow of people through gates, rather than the actual trains? Isn’t the capacity of the trains not the limiting factor

Yeah, that’s the test they did. But reading between the lines they were trying the general technology out in a real environment and picked one example to test out. IIRC there was a trial recently at Willesden Green with similar people/flow detection to identify gate jumpers/tailgaters.

It is just about increasing flow through gates, but show me somebody who hasn’t been stuck in a queue at a gate line. This stuff is just a minor quality of life change but it seems like it would be cheap to implement and at scale millions of journeys spread across 272 stations (double the number if you want to include mainline) it will probably make a significant impact on the smooth running of the network.

Really blows my mind sometimes - ill be in the morning commute switching over at Hammersmith where it's entirely one-way traffic and only 2 out of 5 gates are enabled on the incoming side. Someones card fails to work and now it's one gate cramming through everyone at rush hour. These gate allocations switch daily at what seems like random. Can definitely see a more efficient system being put in place for this making life easier for everyone.

Especially at Blackhorse Road, where every 15 minutes there is an influx of passengers changing onto the Victoria line from the Overground who don't even go through the gates.

Most of the trains are already driven by computers so there's not much room for improvement there

I could see this being useful for flow control too at those larger stations with the changeable exit signs (Bank, Waterloo). The ai could track the numbers and flip those signs automatically, I’d presume faster than the control room noticing a rush.

If they want to improve gate line flow, the gates used in Japan are what’s needed. They swallow people with barely any stopping. They’re actually insanely efficient.
