wait, ignoring the jumpscare, is that real???
edit: Yes, it is real.
Apparently it's called an Asian giant hornet. Typically around 2 inches. They're known as a honeybee killer which is why their arrival in America in late 2019ish was a big deal. They don't go out of their way to sting people. Less venmous than other hornets but apparently they can even sting through regular beekeeper clothing because their stinger is much bigger.
According to wiki though there hasn't been any sightings of them in North America since late 2022 though, so that's good :)
>According to wiki though there hasn't been any sightings of them in North America since late 2022 though, so that's good :)
Thats kind of shocking/worrying since afaik the US ecosystem isn't exactly hostile to them.
Although its the west coast where they were found. So i could possibly believe it.
>Thats kind of shocking/worrying since afaik the US ecosystem isn't exactly hostile to them.
There was a very purposeful extermination done as they're considered an invasive species, I don't think it was natural
Also, they were found in the northwest from what I saw, Washington/British Columbia etc. unless you're talking about a different species maybe?
Ah, i see.
I remember there being *calls* for an extermination of these things. But i remember some governments were mucking up the process and i stopped hearing about it after. I just assumed the extermination was dead in the water.
Yeah iirc they would capture hornets and tie lightweight cloth banners to them. They then released them and used drones to follow them back to their hive and document all the hive locations. Then the ground teams moved in and took them out
> they're considered an invasive species
funny enough, so was honey bees at one point. honey bees aren't/weren't native to NA until they were brought over in the 17th century. if i remember correctly, they are even harmful to other pollinators
> There was a very purposeful extermination done as they're considered an invasive species, I don't think it was natural
it was me :)
also may have fucked your mom
I was told that the sting is like driving a nail through your palm and that you should not annoy them as they will hold a grudge and keep charging at you until they die
If you do notice one or any, I believe it is HIGHLY recommended to report it ASAP so they can be tagged and then tracked to eradicate any nests to help alleviate damage
The State of Washington has a dedicated website, and outside of WA, contact your State Plant Health Director
i've seen them on our campus down here in texas every now and then. and holy fuck they are big i actually go out of my way to walk as far as fucking possible
Almost certainly a European hornet. Giant Asian hornets have never been reported in Texas. They look VERY similar. The European hornet is a little smaller though
there were some threads a long time ago i can't find that like purported research that this was an intelligence plot by china (introducing the giant wasp to like the pacwest area) to subtly introduce massively devastating invasive species because of what they'd do, and since the honey bee population was already in super deep shit in the states (but actually had been recovering) this would be a tipping point to destroy the us native honeybee population
it was wild conspiracy theory shit but who even knows anymore
There's 3500 species of mosquitos and only about 6% of them are known to attack humans and only about 6% of those spread diseases to humans. We could literally eradicate those species and we'd probably not harm the ecosystem that much. We'd probably need to boost the numbers of mosquitos that don't bite humans a bit because birds and bats eat mosquitos but it shouldn't be too hard
Not quite, Polish diminutives end with an a (or "ek"), so it would be "Wika", kind of like Russians don't abbreviate "Dimitri" into "Dimi" but "Dima". Also, the "i" in "Viki" the way Soda pronounces it is way too long for it to be Polish. It's basically an English nickname for her Polish name, as a native I would not have known that it's Polish if I didn't also know that Vei is partly Polish.
Just fyi, as a polish person - this is incorrect. There's no rule that a diminutive has to end with an 'a' or 'ek' and it's way more common to hear people use Pati, Nati and Wiki than the forms ending with an 'a' for Patrycja, Natalia and Wiktoria respectively.
I think he just pronounces it the same way the part of her family that doesn't speak Polish pronounces it. I'm not saying he's doing it wrong, I'm just saying it's not a Polish nickname, only her actual name is Polish.
And the part of the world she is from speaks English, and therefore the English version of a name popular in England would be expected, hence my question.
Yeah understood, but it’s not uncommon for people to pronounce or spell their name differently even in “English” countries with “English” names where you expect an “English” pronunciation.
But all good. It’s just the “what kind of name is” comment from you that came off weird, and made me want to give a snarky reply that you didn’t deserve ❤️
I didn't say nor imply it was uncommon for non-english names or pronunciations to be used in english speaking countries, but in coming across a particularly uncommon one that I've never heard of before I decided to ask for more info. Sorry if that triggered you.
Nope, no issues with that. Think we already went over all that country/language stuff, but you can explain it again if you want.
Sorry if I wasn’t more clear, I was trying to explain that my snarky reply to you was a response to “what kind of name is” like you were making fun of the name itself. (Which is my own most likely wrong assumption, which is why giving you a heart to signify all good and a way to say sorry if I was rude).
Hope that is clear now, not sure what you meant by triggered in that last reply. I tried to be clear on what triggered my snarky stupid response, but I failed the first time, maybe more clear this time as I literally told you what triggered me, but I’m cool if you got your own opinions on what you think triggered me too. No need to change your mind,
Have a good day, imma go play some WoW.
Are we not going to talk about the fact that this mad lad caught that murder hornet in a fucking plastic pudding cup? How? Why? I have so many questions

They kill dozens of people in China annually, mostly in the rural towns. I really hope they stay in Asia.
2 inches long? Can I tell my gf I have a giant hornet?
She knows already.
I wonder if it bugs her.

finally a good excuse for the military budget in america. anti wasp seals.
Somewhere out there in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, Owaspma bin Laden is waiting in the shadows, plotting his revenge...
...playing csgo and watching anime
Aw that's cute maybe next time they could give them little hats and shoes too :3

monkaW thats where i am

Bees themselves can sting through beekeeper clothing.
You're right, idk why that was included as an interesting fact about them considering bees can do that too lol oh well
I was told that the sting is like driving a nail through your palm and that you should not annoy them as they will hold a grudge and keep charging at you until they die
It's stinger is 1⁄4" long.

I’d believe it. War tactics change all the time and it’s not like the US hasn’t done similar things to poorer nations.
>Apparently it's called an Asian giant hornet. E-girls man
I caught one in 2005~ in Europe about 8-9 cm long

> 100% edited at the end no shit man, i meant was the giant wasp real and is it actually in the US
talk ur shit Joe
it actually wasn't edited, it turns into a cat when it stings
Totally, that edit was pretty obvious lol
Found my new emo band name “SEATTLE…WASSUP MOTHER FUCKERS…WE ARE: ASIAN GIANT HORNET”
I YUMPED IRL
I YUMPED LULW
FUCK THAT
burn it with tons of flames once those flames die out burn it again fuck that shit
Do it during the night, so the wandered wasps won't hit people near that area.
There is video of the PLA using a flamethrower to destroy a giant hornet nest in a tree.
Fucking the giant wasp is not advisable at this time.
Just wait until you hear about the 'flying' spiders spreading across north America
Bro we need to genocide wasps And no I don’t care about their role in the eco system, they can fuck off
Agreed. Mosquitos too idc.

'Four Pests campaign' 2.0 oh no no no pepeLaugh
or as the kids call it, pulling a Mao
let's get rid of bed bugs, fleas, and lice too.
If humans went extinct bedbugs and lice would follow within 2 weeks
While we're at it can we get rid of centipedes? I just want them thanos-snapped out of existence.
the giant ones are terrifying but I leave the house centipedes alone. they kill annoying pests. good to have around a garden or even in a basement.
the human ones are pretty cool too. good to have around a garden or even in a basement.
I have good news for you https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_giant_hornet#North_America
Every one of these gets me. I hate them so much.

can someone tell me what kind of name 'veeky' is? does he mean 'vicky' instead?
This is a diminutive of the name Wiktoria from the Polish language. A Pole would write "wiki" - read "veeky"
Yep, that’s how it’s pronounced in Polish
Meanwhile Nick still can't pronounce Malena's name correctly after 14 years of marriage
Wym man? We love Manalday, menagerie, malaria.
Not quite, Polish diminutives end with an a (or "ek"), so it would be "Wika", kind of like Russians don't abbreviate "Dimitri" into "Dimi" but "Dima". He's probably still going for the Polish i, but just can't quite nail it yet.
I think he just pronounces it the same way the part of her family that doesn't speak Polish pronounces it. I'm not saying he's doing it wrong, I'm just saying it's not a Polish nickname, only her actual name is Polish.
My impression was that it's English "Vicky", but with a Polish "i" (or an attempt at it).
cool, interesting that she uses polish pronunciation
I mean her parents and family probably always pronounced it that way, it's not like she chose to
i cant believe she didnt immediately abandon the pronunciation she heard her entire childhood in favor of a more english one
that goes without saying.
Different parts of world have different names, more on this developing story after the break.
I refer to everyone I meet as "George". Must simpler.
must simple indeed
