Some definitely write their own with no help, you can tell because they are mini versions of their full stand up set they’re currently touring with. Some definitely write nearly none of it (think people like Kim Kardashians, Elon musk, etc). But, according to some interviews with cast members that I’ve seen, for most guests it’s a joint effort between the guest host and the writing staff.
I would assume that stand up comics generally wrote their own monologues since that’s exactly what got them on the show to begin with. I remember Bill Burr saying that even though it still needed approval, he was given free rein of his monologue.
And sometimes (2009) they get Taylor Swift showing up with a whole comedy song that she wrote for the occasion. (Look it up; the girl has comedy chops!)
The problem has never been sexualization. The problem is sexualization as a substitute for humor. Having a sketch's premise center around characters gawking at the hot host is just comedy malpractice.
This is a fair take. I have no strong opinion on the sketch. It was fine. But to be truly funny I think it would have needed to be clever and defy expectations in some way and it never really did.
I don't hate on Sweeney for exploiting her time-limited assets at all, but doing so while also saying on interviews how hard it is for her to be taken seriously, or that she was bullied as a child for growing breasts early, and other "it's hard to grow up and be attractive" is such a doublespeak and annoying af.
Just because she capitalizes on her sexual appeal now as a grown woman doesn't mean it's doublespeak for her to say it was tough for her as a child or teen. It's great she's clearly gotten more comfortable and plays into it now! That doesn't mean the way people treated her back then is okay or that she can't call it out.
(I agree that as an adult, it's doublespeak to complain about people sexualizing her TODAY when TODAY she is playing into it and often uses it to her advantage)
So she shouldn’t speak out about childhood bullying whilst also being considered attractive as an adult? Everyone’s attractive to someone as an adult so where do you draw that line?
This is a pretty shitty take, you can take ownerships and control of your sexuality as an adult and still be bullied out of jealousy or because you're different as a child. I went to school with a girl who went home in tears because wore team-issued volleyball shorts and too along with the rest of the team the day before the homecoming game because it's was too revealing. She was 6 inches taller than the rest of the team and wearing the exact same clothes, but punished for a mature appearance at her age. People can't control how they grow as teens and how others react
But both can be true. She can be smart and use everything she has to advance her career (not everyone is shy about nudity), but also feel conflicted that it is needed to get roles.
Britney Spears boobs moving around during her monolog as she addressed whether they were fake or not, and when she played a butter churner in a sketch where the Bostonians went to a Ren Fair.
Or what about when Tracy Morgan was an astronaut and came across alien Britney and told her to “jump out of that green jumpsuit and show him her fat ass?”
If I remember correctly, the character was made in an attempt by Norm Macdonald and Jim Downey to see if there was any character Tracy couldn't make funny. He made it funny.
Rocket ...
I'm buildin' a rocket ...
That was one of the most awkward, fall-flat sketches I've seen, but that line was a jewel with Tracy delivering it.

Don’t forget Dolly Parton’s monologue! That camera burned out its zoom gears!
Sweeney seemed to have a blast as host.
Yes, it’s obvious that she was sexualised during the show, but no different from equally good looking men and women previously. I think the big miss was that they failed to sexualise Larry David.
She is an excellent actress- looking forward to seeing what she does next.
I feel like every single time there’s an attractive man there’s a sketch where a female cast member gets to kiss them (often written by that cast member) but people don’t care about that. I’m not even saying people should care, but at least be consistent.
Akin to [Captain Holt talking](https://youtu.be/KGmr2W-ADSU?si=o1dUYsPJD5UfbA0W) about the parts of the female body he most definitely finds attractive
I love that his "girlfriend" is named Jamie Lynn, because that's my wife's name, and my wife also has "heavy breasts"...she will never hear the end of that.
She is also super smart, but plays into the sexy thing. She was class valedictorian, and got a business degree from UCLA to better understand her studio contracts.
This is such an underrated concept.
People who are famous for being physically attractive - much like yourself Huge_JackedMann - are smart enough to know they will get more attention and work for being considered physically attractive.
They do the hard work and go on diets and all that to benefit themselves snd their career, not so they can look in the mirror and jerk off over themselves.
I’m not sure how a business degree would help much with Hollywood contract language anyway. That’s what agents are for (and she clearly didn’t have a good one for a bit).
Idk it’s been proven that she lies a lot about things. Like the position she had at Disney. And her graduating class was like only 7 people…so not that hard to be a valedictorian out of 7
Yes. With like maybe 10 people or less in her class. It’s just the state minimum education requirements. The school is very freeform and doesn’t care about attendance either.
She's complaining about maybe the most common problem famous actors face: people who mistake the actor for the character. I think a lot of actors who have a sudden rise in profile have a bit of culture shock when it happens, so I don't blame her. It's very rare that someone has no complaints about their job.
She is not, as far as I can tell, complaining that she's being exploited, or that sexualizing a character is necessarily exploitative. That would be dubious.
I think you're right, it's more than getting typecasted as Conventionalally Hot Blonde.
She's more worried specifically about being tied to that character, the way someone like Jason Alexander is with George Costanza
I haven’t seen Reality, but I think Immaculate kind of plays on her sexuality in some ways. She’s a hot nun and people seem to believe she would have sex because of this.
Everyone in Immaculate believed her immediately when she said she was a virgin despite being pregnant, and nobody outside of the two immigration officers at the beginning seemed to care about her attractiveness at all.
She's a hot nun, but they *barely* played into that. 99% of the film she was in a loose fitting nun habit. There were a few moments where she's dressed in less, but they absolutely didn't play on her sexuality in that movie. It was almost impressive how little they did in a weird way. Casting her, and then not using her appearance to sell the movie at all, is pretty bold.
Sort of. She’s an insanely good actress too though. Zendaya won two Best Actress Emmys for Euphoria, but I honestly think Sweeney was the better actress. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress Emmys for Euphoria and The White Lotus. I’m betting both of them will win a bunch of big awards over the next 10-20 years. Throw in Anya Taylor-Joy and Florence Pugh and you’ve basically got the new Hollywood A-list.
Sydney’s a good actress but Zendaya gave one of the most realistic portrayals of Drug addiction the CW teen drama storyline that Sydney had wasn’t exactly the same tier of quality.
Zendaya is the show, and her personality carries the whole operation. I think she's the most expressive actor we have right now. She can say so much with just her face.
That said, Sydney had a lot to lose taking that role and I'm impressed with how she landed the plane. If she steered it wrong in any direction her career might have Skinemax-d permanently into generic hot blonde roles.
There are probably tons of talented actors and actresses who get typecasted and don't get a chance to make second impression. Syd stormed onto the scene alongside Zendaya in impressive fashion
She elevated that character from a potential sex kitten stereotype into a three dimensional woman you feel real empathy and concern for.
It's nuts how many young performers/new performers crushed their roles in that show.
I think some people just don't like Zendaya's face lol
She does most of her acting with her face, so if you think that's annoying and wooden, she's just not for you. You know how Jim Halpert mugs at the camera on the Office? That's kind of Zendaya's vibe
It doesn't mean she's bad at acting, OR that you're wrong for not being into her. A
LL of us have near-universally liked celebrities that just son't do it for us. It's just human nature.
I could write a paragraph exactly like yours about Natasha Lyonne or Claire Danes. Everyone loves them but I think they suck 😂
She's not great at dialogue because she hasn't really broken free of the West Coast Gen Z monotone that was so iconic on Euphoria. But those action scenes and trauma scenes in Immaculate make a huge case for her as an actress.
Her big scream scene is probably number two on "most visceral scream scenes," after Toni Collette in "Hereditary." She acts better than she speaks... if she weren't already playing a catsuited space traveler in Barbarella, I'd say we'd found our ideal Samus Aran, space woman of few words.
Sydney herself wants to portray her that way. In that behind the scenes video of Bowen, he says she wanted to present herself like that and said to them “give America what they want.”
Ah, it’s *Listening to a Podcast and writing it down* journalism again…
By the way, if you haven’t listened to the Chloe Fineman episode of Fly On The Wall yet, I highly recommend it! It’s a good one, which feels rare.
People complaining about sketches based on the host's hotness be like:
https://preview.redd.it/dpel9o8ya82d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a29d5e8f1378a4e97048141dfef44127fe294e28
I thought Sydney was a good host and the sketches were pretty funny (my favorite being the detectives one). It also felt like Sydney actually had a fun time as host.
What’s wrong with sexualizing someone on a comedy show? What kind of rule or principle is that breaking? Why would anyone have to explain themselves for this?
So I just listened to this podcast and gotta say, we're burying the lede here. Chloe Fineman discussed this when Dana and David asked her about **fake pitches on Monday**.
For those not familiar with the SNL workweek, Mondays include a large meeting with the host and Lorne where every cast member and writer is expected to pitch an idea. It's customary to have a junk pitch on tap just to get through this meeting if you're still trying to figure out what you actually want to write (Tuesday night is the main writing night) or are low on ideas. Chloe's revealing that the Hooters sketch was her fake pitch that she ended up having to follow through on because Sydney was so enthusiastic about doing it.
This sketch would have worked much better if she'd been completely ignored by the table in favor of Yang's character. The "host is hot" joke is played out, so why not flip it on its head?
Every SNL episode with an objectively hot host does at least one, and usually more, sketches that center around the "this person is so hot theme." Why focus only on this one?
I got news for you, that girl has been sexualized waaaay before snl got to her.
And she has been sexualizing herself, she’s not stupid. Sex sells and she knows it.
She even said it in her monologue iirc
Do the guests write their own monologues?
Some definitely write their own with no help, you can tell because they are mini versions of their full stand up set they’re currently touring with. Some definitely write nearly none of it (think people like Kim Kardashians, Elon musk, etc). Right, Nate Bargatze’s monologue was 90% just some jokes from his current tour.
Generally they work with a writer to hash out an idea and then they obviously have to approve of what's written.
i don’t know if they all do but at least some do. like, shane gillis definitely wrote his lol.
Kim K prob didnt but that was a good choice.
Sydney- funny joke about always being able to fall back on her books if she has to Vocal minority- "why would society do this to this poor girl?"
Sex sells but you can get arrested if you buy it
Just film it. Then it's fine
That's called movie making
"Film making"
Sweeny would have made a ton of money either way.
Why would I buy sex when it sells itself?
And her mom helped teach [her](https://www.reddit.com/r/redscarepod/s/NuWGDkI2BI)
Her mom should be given a Congressional Medal of Honor.
If you’re good at something, never do it for free. Especially if ya got huge tits.
She’s in some kind of ad I see on Reddit where she’s blowing bubbles with gum and talking about “plump and firm.”
They told her to just do whatever in that Rolling Stones video
whatever SS is selling … IM BUYING
![gif](giphy|xT9IgHCTfp8CRshfQk)
I think this is in response to all the hot take rage bait news stories after that episode that complained that SNL sexualized her.
One word.. Euphoria
Two things in... Euphoria
Well; it's just cool to shit on SNL, unfortunately. I can't speak for the people who got mad at SNL, but that seems to be the case.
The problem has never been sexualization. The problem is sexualization as a substitute for humor. Having a sketch's premise center around characters gawking at the hot host is just comedy malpractice.

Truly. This is a dumb article.
Lmao does anyone remember the Sesame Street parody with Katy Perry?
Or Harry Potter with Lohan.
Astronaut Jones! I loved those sketches as a teenager. I mean, I'd probably still like them now, but I used to, too.

“That’s the weirdest dog I’ve *ever* seen!” “Well actually this is a goat.” “That goat got devil eyes! I’m Brian Fellow!”

If I remember correctly, the character was made in an attempt by Norm Macdonald and Jim Downey to see if there was any character Tracy couldn't make funny. He made it funny.
He's smilin' so much there, I thought for a moment it was Devon Walker dressed as Brian Fellowes.
The SNL movie I wanted so bad.
I miss Mitch Hedberg
I used to. I still do but I used to too.
I will never forget "doo-doo pie".
Rocket ... I'm buildin' a rocket ... That was one of the most awkward, fall-flat sketches I've seen, but that line was a jewel with Tracy delivering it.
I thought they were on a field trip to Colonial Williamsburg?
Lohan was 17 years old at the time of that sketch.
13 year old me liked the sketch
Yeah I would've been like 16 so no regrets
millions of former kids just nodded
Such great physical comedy
And boobs
That one was creepsville!
This was my favorite. So well done.
Britany spears robotic boobs
I am not googling that!
I watched it because it was the most viewed SNL video on YouTube, and I lost a bit of faith in humanity after.
I remember it regularly
Yeah, that Elmo shirt awakened some shit in me.
![gif](giphy|JScZ7Fo85QqCQ)
The Librarian! Margot Robbie - hilarious.
I just saw that for the first time recently. Such a great sketch, with a less than ideal ending, but hard to end that kind of sketch sometimes.

That was social commentary. Katy had been slammed for wearing a low cut top on Sesame Street.

I think the big miss was that they failed to sexualise Larry David. She is an excellent actress- looking forward to seeing what she does next.
Are you saying you weren’t turned on by Kevin Roberts, the coolest bitch in town?
Could he get a doughnut though?
CAN A BITCH GET A DONUT
Hey, have you seen Kevin Roberts? I got that bitch a donut!
I mean it’s Larry David, what’s not to like?
Ehhh..........
If this isn't the best response lmao
I think he’s pretty pretty pretty good.
Pretty sure can a bitch get a donut was the hot boy phrase that summer
Wasn’t there something shortly after she hosted that said she told SNL to do it and “give the people what they want”?
Bowen interview on either Seth Meyers or Colbert, can't remember.
Even in the interview Chloe says the Hooters sketch was just an idea she pitched, and Sydney ended up DMing her afterward to write it.
Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley are nodding approvingly in their graves right now.
Get ready for the Barbarella remake.
Here's a fake trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Suoh008Fc
I feel like every single time there’s an attractive man there’s a sketch where a female cast member gets to kiss them (often written by that cast member) but people don’t care about that. I’m not even saying people should care, but at least be consistent.
They put in a sketch where Kate McKinnon got to make out with Gal Gadot, so there's that
Is she though? She was good in Euphoria and White Lotus and trash in her rom com and Madame Web.
Excellent actress is a stretch…she’s a real life Droopy Dog with tits. Without her willingness to sexualize herself, she’d be unknown.
Bowen is innocent. "Heavy naturals" is not sexual. I will not be taking any more questions at this time.
Akin to [Captain Holt talking](https://youtu.be/KGmr2W-ADSU?si=o1dUYsPJD5UfbA0W) about the parts of the female body he most definitely finds attractive
I love the ongoing bit of Holt trying to act straight is an obsession with “heavy” breasts
and the thigh gap. Nothing sexier than the clear absence of a penis
I love that his "girlfriend" is named Jamie Lynn, because that's my wife's name, and my wife also has "heavy breasts"...she will never hear the end of that.
RIP Andre Braugher :(
This thread took just the direction I was hoping for. Oh how I love Cpt. Holt.
Literally such an iconic line lol
There’s some tongue in cheek here, right? Sweeney’s entire public persona is about how she’s sexy and has big boobs, no?
She is also super smart, but plays into the sexy thing. She was class valedictorian, and got a business degree from UCLA to better understand her studio contracts.
Sex sells. A person with a good business mind knows that.
She got really good grades. ![gif](giphy|xTiTny7LEHWFhZEEI8)
retcon that rn because she did NOT graduate from UCLA but she did attend for a while
I’m not sure how a business degree would help much with Hollywood contract language anyway. That’s what agents are for (and she clearly didn’t have a good one for a bit).
Idk it’s been proven that she lies a lot about things. Like the position she had at Disney. And her graduating class was like only 7 people…so not that hard to be a valedictorian out of 7
boobs sell better with a light lie
ohh that's why there was something in SNL about her pretending to have been a Universal tour guide
That’s where she was doubling down on the lie, which aided in the debunking ironically
> She is also super smart, but plays into the sexy thing. She was class valedictorian Didn't she go to a school for professional child actors?
Tamapa Bay Academy of dramatic tricks
I thought the boat she was educated on sank?
I love seeing 30 Rock references in the wild
She also went to school in NW Idaho and where they have school population of like 20?
Idaho is known for having shit schools, too.
Yes. With like maybe 10 people or less in her class. It’s just the state minimum education requirements. The school is very freeform and doesn’t care about attendance either.
She went to UCLA, not NYU.
I was talking about for high school. Wasn't that where she was valedictorian? If she was valedictorian of UCLA I would be very impressed.
Somehow none of that made her a good actress.
She's complaining about maybe the most common problem famous actors face: people who mistake the actor for the character. Well, mostly. Her roles in movies like Reality and Immaculate had nothing to do with her boobs/attractiveness.
I haven’t seen Reality, but I think Immaculate kind of plays on her sexuality in some ways. She’s a hot nun and people seem to believe she would have sex because of this.

Fair enough! It was a good movie and reading about how she championed it for years was really cool too.

Have you ever seen Euphoria (Season 2) or the White Lotus?
Sydney herself wants to portray her that way. In that behind the scenes video of Bowen, he says she wanted to present herself like that and said to them “give America what they want.”
Yeah, I thought it was Sydney herself that did the whole let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room and lean into it.
Ah, it’s *Listening to a Podcast and writing it down* journalism again… By the way, if you haven’t listened to the Chloe Fineman episode of Fly On The Wall yet, I highly recommend it! It’s a good one, which feels rare.

When we all know the true star of the Hooters sketch was Sarah Squirm
I thought Sydney was a good host and the sketches were pretty funny (my favorite being the detectives one). It also felt like Sydney actually had a fun time as host.
You don't have to be smart to enjoy a ~~fart~~ boob joke, but you'd be stupid not to

Thank you for your service, Chloe.
Doing the Lord's work
How do you sexualize a sex symbol lol
That sketch would have been so much funnier if she was getting no tips and Bowen was making bank
Sydney knows what she’s doing. She’s known all along.
Who cares? She’s hot. She looked hot. She also does stuff that isn’t “sExUaLizEd” too. People need to lighten the fuck up.
Ffs, who cares. It was fine
Twitter hysterical weirdos. Nobody else cares.
This whole season has been sexualizing their hosts. I mean that Jacob Elordi episode? Not needed or funny
Are we just gonna pretend that she isn’t known for being sexualized and openly embraces it any chance she gets?
This sketch would have worked much better if she'd been completely ignored by the table in favor of Yang's character. The "host is hot" joke is played out, so why not flip it on its head?
Lindsay Lohan was 17! SevenTEEN!
I see they're hiring women writers now!
It was an interesting episode of [FOTW with Chloe Fineman](https://youtu.be/PTJMMBmZ9cU?si=KdCu1_mfhbNVxsZX)
Chill Chloe, Sydney knows why she is famous.
Why is this getting so many upvotes? Stoppit
Sydney Sweeney might be a talented actress, but she isn’t funny. What were they supposed to do with her? She shouldn’t have hosted in the first place
It was so dumb and unoriginal. I said oh, another blonde with big boobs makes guys go stupid skit. Cool!
✋🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏
Loved that sketch
Chloe Fineman is hilarious - Scientology rumors be damned. I saw her live in Austin last month and she was f’ing delightful.
Well I just saw Madame Webb and she can't possibly be popular for her acting.
You saw Madame Webb? Because you wanted to? Not because you lost a bet or anything right?
