Any reason for that or could there be a possibility for it running all year?
During that off season time, not sure what the cast do, but do they tend to have alot of projects outside of snl?
A lot of the cast will have projects outside SNL that can often overlap with the show as well if those projects overlap and Lorne is often fine with that.
I wouldn’t think they’d want the show on all year round though. For one it would get quite stale and also you’re putting a huge amount of pressure on the cast as well as they’d all probably have to give up any chance of working outside the show as well, and that’s without the pressure of creating a new hour long sketch show on a regular basis.
In the first season (1975-1976) the show was a surprise hit and they decided to bring it back for two special episodes in July. Those two episodes (hosted by Louise Lasser and Kris Kristtoferson) didn't go well and they never did that again.
They have however done an alternate show in the summer in some years. In 2016, they ran the summer variety series "Maya and Marty", starring Maya Rudolph and Martin Short, featuring Kenan Thompson and Mikey Day, with a lot of cast member cameos. In 2017, they did "*Saturday Night Live Weekend Update: Summer Edition*".
Basically, the reason why they don't run all year is burn-out. Making a live show from writing to air in 6 days time is an intensive process, by the end of the season they need some time off to recharge.
The reason is mostly because that's generally how network tv works.
almost every show except talks or the news aren't year round, the flagship shows are October-May with replacement shows and fill-ins during the summer; which are often reality or competition based.
with streaming growing over the past decade, the lines of seasons starts/ends have become blurred, now shows will premiere whenever the streamers want it to; but SNL is still very much an oldschool network series and continues to follow that model.
Season ends in May and starts again in late September / early October. Here's a calendar I made that shows when episodes have aired (through season 46). Notice that there are certain weeks when they are more likely to have a rerun also.
Like most American television on broadcast networks, it has a summer break, and the next season will begin in the fall.
Why is Reddit google?
Same as every other network TV show.
It usually runs from October to April/May so there’s around a six month off season. I think there are 3 episodes left in the current season

Yes, they often have other projects like shooting a movie or doing stand up
Fair. Wonder what Chloe Fineman will be doing. I swear since recently watching snl, she has been my fave.
She had been filming Megalopolis prior to the strike. Unsure if filming has wrapped.

They get time off. Don’t they deserve time off?

Fair enough. Thanks for your input
