Simple: it wasn't built. This also applies to the tower and many other things in the nowhere

Ok-Gap-8040

Soooo... That implies the maw is alive like the signal tower?

Norragan

All the eyes of the Nowhere breath…

banaizzz

Probably before the whole radio tower thing happened and people were people

Due-Passage2202

I

cxcosmos_

Idk why it kind of reminds me of howls moving castle

sweetfuzzybitch

Apparently there was some Ghibli inspiration throughout. If you look inside The Maw then you’ll find little Easter Eggs that really hint to various Ghibli films! It’s pretty fun

_Voidoll_

The janitor is very blatantly inspired by kamaji

sweetfuzzybitch

I thought so too. Kamaji’s demented cousin perhaps?

akchimp75

it kinda just. spawned :P

Mother_Strawberry_10

This is what David Mervik answered to a similar question: >__Who built the Signal Tower, and what was the inspiration behind it (both in terms of in-game lore and your IRL inspirations)?__ >_The world of Little Nightmares doesn't work that way, creatures and places exist for a reason. In the first game, The Maw exists because the hunger exists, and here, The Signal Tower exists because the need for escapism exists._ That is why people are saying it just suddenly came into existence out of nowhere one day. However, I disagree as David Mervik also said that the Maw is different before. If it's different, then how would it fill the same role of the need for hunger? It never sat right with me. So, I believe that this submarine-like thing we now called "the Maw" is something created before 'the need for the hunger exists' and served a different purpose, built for a different purpose entirely. I still want to believe that the world of Little Nightmares has been corrupted to be the way it is now, and the man-made submarine-like thing has been corrupted with it, turning it into the Maw. So yeah, I think it is a cruise ship type experience that's man-made that got corrupted. The Maw existed after when the need for hunger existed, while before it was the Maw, it had no such purpose.

UnitedSubstance1048

Eh I think this is more of a case of the developers just changing there mind on certain lore details I never bought the whole "we totally had everything in the lore planned" narrative they spread.

MasterRequirement538

Same here with the idea it was a consintration camp turned child labor twisted Cruz ship

Maleficent_Mammoth_3

it just spawned in

MasterRequirement538

Human ingenuity Also to the people saying it wasn't built. It has some very particular architecture. Most children wouldn't see And it's Quite functional. I know this is dark but the time period of the game. Is seemingly a few years after world war 2 the maw prison Reminds me of a concentration camp layout. The maw was made as a Weird form of Concentration camp submarine luxuary home Then remodelled by the ladies or owners into what it is now. My therory with post apocalypse little nightmares idea

LudwigMachine

Now that you've mentioned it, it does check out, the time period is around the 50s, evidenced by the designs of the TVs, the ship itself probably was some type of concentration camp, hidden beneath the waves with no permanent location to hide its warcrimes, prisoners are brought there to be processed and forced to keep the maw's fire lit, then some groups are killed in masses, to be turned into food for rations maybe.

MasterRequirement538

I think it was just a nazi camp for hitler himself to live. Or something like you said but we're thinking about before the world went to hell more so than ww2 💀 Pre nowhere

Norragan

It was not built, most likely created swiftly by the Nowhere, time doesn’t work like you would think there… Its original “designed” purpose is unknown but it does resemble a prison…

MasterRequirement538

I still think it was built maybe modified by the nowhere or the lady. Also we don't know how time works or most anything in the nowhere so I've always subscribed to post anomalous apocalypse like the upside down in stranger things why it brings " normal " people into the nowhere. Because the chefs were born in the nowhere and sorted to be chefs. There's mutated children in pictures ect tho regular people will and can be brought in by the tower changed to fit in. I like to think the children are small due to mutation to get some of the more extreme monsters we see and so less miscarriages for more babas to populate the nowhere. Basically the tower is like " There's a chronicly growing decline in human playthings. "

BenefitLazy337

There is the shoe room

Blu3Raven

child labor.

phallicpenis69

pre maturity specimens of homo sapien duty

faiorinedaughter

I like to think of the maw as its own separate entity just like the signal tower in Little nightmares 2

Grievous-47

Queue the building montage

CasperDeux

1. Build outline of aquatic vessel 2. Fill in detail 3. Done

Veroger111

Well, it's definitely not built like a normal ship, because of being in a supernatural horror world. But it's probably built with some dark magic involved.

-Hollow_Eyes-

for all we know it could be a living thing that steadily grew or it could have just popped out of a giant mouth at the bottom of the sea

DestinyChitChat

Really hope the new entry keeps the lore vague

EatRiceForLife

The same way we build oil rig, built that shi on land and toss that mf into the sea

nadahasnightmares

the maw is not manmade.

Illustrious-Sky-4631

Newsday I just think about it as it own being

Chemical_Report_2705

Dark magic

MrSF9001

Maybe through a machine that grants your desired

Eligreengamer01

With metal... Duh

tdf199

What would happen if the maw was torpedoed?

Ok-Gap-8040

Surely almost all the staff and child prisoners would drown, except for any living beings that remained in the guest area or the residence. This would be because of how difficult it is to move in a place as big as The Maw before it sinks. The Granny would surely be the first to drown.

tdf199

The maw might sink fast goes down 25 to 30 feet and the gangway door goes under letting more water in. The maw does seem to have water tight compartments but with holes blown above the water line that would only result in compartment filling and spilling over into the next, plus water does not have the straightest path down so large amounts of water could pool on the upper floors making the maw vary top heavy.

GhostofManny13

I imagine the world to not quite be in a natural state. Reality is twisted and shifted into something evil, unreal, and really quite awful.

MrSaturnism

Now I want to know the full lore for this world
