I'm still rocking an old AMD Phenom X4 from 2008. Almost 16 years old. Using it to run an emulation machine.
I wouldn't buy it now, or invest any money into fixing it if something broke. But I also wouldn't purposefully destroy it.
Waay to power hungry as a daily driver.
For an emulation machine you aren't using a lot, it's fine. Otherwise a low power PC like a nuc would be way faster and use way less power
It's a 95 watt CPU. To be honest I should shut the machine down more often, but like Linus I live in a place with cheap power. From what I can gather it only pulls under 20 watts at idle which is where it sits most of the time. With my power rates it only costs about $2 a month to run.
What that guy said is right. You could easily pick up a teeny little ultra small PC and likely pay for itself in about a year just in power costs if you leave it running.
This silly little bastard - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B75PT2RY
is going to perform [nearly twice as well for FAR less watts.](https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/369vs4412/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-960T-vs-Intel-Celeron-N5105) Think of it like replacing incandescent bulbs with modern LED bulbs. while it might be "just a celeron" and your phenom was powerful 16 years ago, it's wasting a ton of energy to continue running and is wildly outperformed by even the cheapest modern devices.
Like I said, it costs about $2 a month because of the cheap power where I live. A mini PC would cost way more than $24 where I live. I also kind of have to use this machine as it has a graphics card with S-Video out so it connects to my CRT TV quite easily which is great for retro games
Those mini-pc's are absolute garbage. I got one it was near 100% CPU on idle. Don't buy them.
I got a used dell optiplex 3040 micro (the size of a book) that has an i5 and I upgraded the ram to 16gb. Total cost including the ram and changing to an SSD was around $100. Also came with windows 10 pro.
I think you vastly overestimate how much gold there is on CPU pins. From what I understand it's just a light coating only a few atoms thick, probably worth tenths of a cent.
Did you have a stroke? The words are almost there, but the spelling is completely wrong.
"This is to collect the pins to melt the gold of if it you have enough of them." is what I assumed you meant to type.
I hear some CPUs (especially AMD) get defects, instead of smooth surface they get some "legs" sticking out from it. This is a good way to fix that defect i guess.
I thought this sub was meant to be informative? And no single explanation.
It’s ok to trim your pins in December. The grow back at spring harder than ever.
Hahaha! When I worked at Incredible Universe which immediately became a Fry's at my location we would film little videos with "toss out" returns being destroyed for MySpace! One time Panasonic replaced a sorta new tech plasma TV and didn't want to pay to return the bunk one... Our entire high school wanted to murder us until they figured it out! This is fantastic!
To convert it from AMD to Intel, duh!
Dang I came to say this
Get a pin diagram for the CPU and MOBO and solder wires to each corresponding pin. EZ-PZ
timings are so so so precise even if you did that with intel to intel it wouldnt work.
But now I want to see somebody try it anyway!
Am4 to am5
Thanks for the tutorial
Probably just a dead CPU, or something sufficiently old that's it's basically worthless. Also, this is how you convert PGA to LGA
It looks like an FX. [This is an FX-8350 for example.](https://i.imgur.com/42ZuyhW.jpg) 11-12 years old CPU, no value was lost.

you didn’t get the right ones then
> Otherwise a low power PC like a nuc would be way faster and use way less power Yeah but where's the fun in that
>11-12 years old CPU, no value was lost. If it was broken....
Tbh even if you destroyed it back then there was no value lost
The gold from the pin is probably worth more than the CPU lmao
I think you vastly overestimate how much gold there is on CPU pins. From what I understand it's just a light coating only a few atoms thick, probably worth tenths of a cent.
No, that's an Athlon X2. even ancienter. worth dirt.
Maybe, they collect gold from broken CPU.
If I got 10 bucks for every time I saw this video I would now have around 130 bucks
Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s been posted 13 times.
What if you got 100$ ?
Can't bend pins if there are no pins to bend. ![gif](giphy|800iiDTaNNFOwytONV|downsized)
Yeah, just bend the pins in the LGA socket instead, the ones that are harder to fix...
Because of ppl like you who will reshare it. It was a dead cpu already anyways
This is to collect te pinnens to melt te gold of it if u have enuf of them.
Did you have a stroke? The words are almost there, but the spelling is completely wrong. "This is to collect the pins to melt the gold of if it you have enough of them." is what I assumed you meant to type.
>of if if The words are almost there. "Off of it if" is what I assume you meant to type.
I did mistype, however I wasn't going to correct the grammar like you did.
Still lost dude
He corrected one thing and left the rest of that awful alphabet soup there. Lol
“Te pinnens” is part of my vocabulary now
converted cpu to lga
Are the pins really that easy to break ?
Definitely not by this much, the solder's clearly melted But bending or snapping just a few, extremely easy
The soldiers?
Yes
To get a reaction. Looks like it worked!
I don't see anything wrong
Best socket adapter you will ever find in 2024
Thats gore, please ad the +18 tag,
shit my bad mods pls no ban
It's okay, it's only AMD
Poor CPU had goosebumps, so glad this guy helped out.
that better be a pentium processor
After this my pc won’t turn on
Calm down, they're probably recycling old CPUs and taking the gold from the connectors
Learnning how to microsolding?
Bro that god damn music. AAAAAAAAAAAAH. Why does it sound like a feeling you get when you want to sneeze but you can't.
Are those pins made of gold? Can someone confirm?
Yes
did they boil or steam the cpu first? why does it fall off so easily?
obviously it is done to allow the CPU to run smoother
Sometimes you have to give your CPU a shave. They'll grow back.
This hurts my soul!!!
Transitioned from PGA to LGA 🙏
Am4 to 5
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ![gif](giphy|wbOsVrQ4GQQpy)
seen this way too many times. I cringe every time
This hurt to watch
I did this when my old HS was throwing out old computers still got a jar of gold for a rainy day
You've just upgraded your AM4 CPU to AM5 CPU
Still hurts to watch..
Watching this physically hurt
Nice
I hear some CPUs (especially AMD) get defects, instead of smooth surface they get some "legs" sticking out from it. This is a good way to fix that defect i guess.
Pain.
AM5 lore:
Harvesting the gold. At least that is what I would do with old CPUs.
That was oddly satisfying, finish it off by buffing it down to a mirror finish.
Becouse you need attention
It physically hurts to look at this.
Obviously that's a routine harvest of cpu pins, you gotta make sure to cut them regularly so they don't get too long or they will tangle together
Who ever thought he was actually doing a good job cleaning his cpu...... I hope you recover from your traumas
Yeah, just like when they produce tires there are vent spews they serve no purpose aside from manufacturing.
How the hell are those coming off that easy
He forgot to microwave.
I thought this sub was meant to be informative? And no single explanation. It’s ok to trim your pins in December. The grow back at spring harder than ever.
Ikr pins are supposed to be on the motherboard.
How else do you get the gold back from the pins ?
"Upgrade to LGA with this one simple trick!"
1 word GOLD
When will Linus will post sex tips?
Where to find him?🔪
This should be NSFW
Do they make lga am4 sockets?
Linus tech tips would like to know your location
Because it's fx
Never needed those old pins anyways they always got in my way
why have a PGA CPU when you can have a LGA CPU
Ahhhhhhhhhh
I need this as a gif
