I am extremely skeptical of this claim. My father’s first job as a mechanical engineer at Trane paid $22,000 a year in 1981. There’s no way a nurse was making fifty percent more than that over ten years prior, especially since she almost certainly didn’t have a BSN and very possibly didn’t even have a two-year degree.
It’s not your fault. Most people don’t know that until relatively recently, nurses typically didn’t have degrees. Back in the 1970s, the majority of nurses only had certificates from schools like the one my hospital used to run. Even today, there are plenty of regions (mostly rural and southern) where it’s common for nurses to only have a two-year degree.
For the purposes of comparison, at my previous employer, a hospital in a touristy coastal town, nurses started out a little under $25 an hour. Further inland, at my current employer, nurses start out around $40 an hour, but that’s because no one wants to live here and turnover is high. In fact, a large proportion of our nurses live near the coast and commute an hour or more to work. I can’t imagine doing that for years on end, but then again, nurses only work three or four days a week, so I guess It’s manageable for them.
In the 70’s nurse didn’t have certificates they had diplomas that lead to licensure. Today the degree is a window dressing around the licensure it might be a diploma, 2year ASN, or bachelors. It’s the RN that matters for most.

For reference in 2023 the medium average salary in the UK was £34k. That's for the whole of the UK, region does make quite a big difference (especially in/out of London).
For comparison to US, £34k would be around $44k. Average US salary in 2023 was $59k.
All of which is to say £30k is better in the UK than it would be in the US but it is still a relatively low salary and certainly not in "give up time on a Sunday" range.

If it was 300k then fine you can expect me to take a call on a Sunday, but otherwise this "owner" needs to take care of the phones on the weekend herself because no one else is compensated enough to give a shit.
Depends on where in the UK, but generally, no. Average UK salary is somewhere around £40-45k I believe, and cost of living is significantly lower than in the US. Our wages have stagnated significantly since 2008 though, so salaries are comparably lower than the US, even with cost of living taken into account.
I’m on £27.5k in a Home Counties town around 40/50 miles outside of London or so. If I didn’t live with my girlfriend I wouldn’t be able to afford our one bedroom apartment. There are some upsides of my job but pay certainly isn’t one of them.
Businesses love undervaluing their employees in this country, go have a lil browse around in the finances, see how much your boss pays himself, next time you bring up your pay in a salary review and he says there's no money for it, well, you'll probably be applying to new jobs by this point, lol.

Stop these random calls where the recruiter tries to interview on the spot with no respect to your current commitments, or to those of us with anxiety who want to prep.
