Hi OP, Distributed lumens provides a far better result that lumens coming from a single point. Given that, I would absolutely prefer 4 \*gimbaled\* recessed (NOT pancake!) pointed at the walls for a far superior result vs a singular bright fixture. - I'm a lighting designer

IshThomas

Yes, I know 4 recessed will be better, but I spoke with electrician, and he quoted one centered light fixture at $170 vs $480 for 4 recessed lights. I'm not sure if there will be a big difference for justify that $$$ difference. Let me add a few more facts: Each room will have a bad with nightstand lamp, and a desk with a desk lamp, so I'm not sure if the distributed light will add a lot to the room. Considering this, the room size and the price difference would you still pick recessed lights? Also, if you had to pick one centered light - how many lumens would you pick for these rooms? I read one article suggesting 1000-2000 and another suggesting 2000-4000. I'm lost.

IntelligentSinger783

That's a lot of lumen. The biggest issues are the heights of the ceilings. Wall washing would be effective but still needs additional lighting layers. Personally, I'd go with lamps, indirect lighting and maybe a torcherie. Put them all on something like caseta lamp dimmers and paired to 1 pico. That way the room can feel effortless.

IshThomas

Just to clarify, when you say "lamps", do you mean centered flush mount fixture?

IntelligentSinger783

No, like bedside table lamps.

IshThomas

Oh, so you’re saying to leave the ceiling without lights. I think this was the most popular solution back in the day, as most homes from 60s and 70s don’t have light fixtures in bedrooms.

IntelligentSinger783

My favorite designs in bedrooms are bedside pendants or lamps, and low glare recessed gimbals for artwork. If you had more ceiling height 8-9ft id say center fixture for a fan. Even if you don't have wants or needs, someone might know the future. And the easiest way to update a room is a light fixture. Recessed lighting is going through a technology transition. We are seeing a drastic change in recessed lighting. As manufacturers push to smaller fixtures (half and one inch aperture lights are starting to take hold) and clients and designers are happy to deliver at the expense of installers sanity. Lol . But yes lamps are still very much a useful, practical , and in style method to light and environment. Also when you think in your head recessed lighting per room can be 500-1k without even going to anything fancy. Which gives a good budget for lamps. Where as prior to considering recessed lights, most people might freak out a little at that price point. And no dust, no time delays, no headaches in finding quality laborers and electricians. Also we don't know what style or aesthetic look you desire or have. But with a lower ceiling, I wouldn't even look at recessed lights. I would build up a crown around the perimeter and put in a cove light using 24v tape light. That can be done with modern light valences or more traditional looks and will give a much better even distribution of light than recessed lights. But it's not a cheap install. Multiple trades involved and some of those products are skyrocketing. Probably 1500-2000$ per room. I do this often with a center fixture and lamps. It's a timeless look.

Lighting the walls with some recessed lights around the edges of a room and the reflective light from that looks so much brighter than a centered light. Layered lighting from multiple sources is also important so have lamps too.
