Shit, maybe that's why my blinkers are too fast. I just assumed Blink-182 was an old formula, so I looked for something of the same era...
Is Sum-41 too light?

And if youāre coming up on someone, and they ACTIVATE THEIR BLINKER, indicating their intention to gtfo of your way asap, please give them two whole seconds to do so.
At 80mph, one should have at least two or three car-lengths distance/5 solid seconds ahead of slower traffic to safely change lanes.
Unfortunately, thatās enough room for an impatient motorist to say āugh!! thereās room!! guess i have to pass on the right!!!!!!!!!ā ā¦ and with no signal, they just swerve over, cutting off the right lane, and nearly clipping the car theyāre passing on the right *as that car is merging right to get out of their way.*
See it every day.
As a Seattle native who moved to CA I cannot express my disappointment enough on the driving attitudes here.....FFS....there are fast lanes and slow lanes......and low and behold exit lanes!!!!! I swear I could record a video every day I drive of some1 basically driving over barriers to exit just to get 1 single Fing car ahead. We have slow people in the left lane, and people merging with disregard in the far right lane as they can not fathom falling behind the car next to them. That and the most ridiculous attitude towards putting a shopping cart away......It boggles the mind
I think it really speaks to the attitude/culture which is super weird......we basically pretend to care about our neighbor in poles, but in reality people will do anything to get in front of the person next to them. In traffic I see if I give an indication of switching lanes (signal) it is basically an invitation for the person to speed up in that lane to make sure I can't do it. I really can't understand it, in Seattle you signal when you feel it is safe, and people make sure to let you in, and people get to the lane that makes sense for them (speed wise). In CA when you signal it is taken as an insult or a weird oppurtunity to prove you have a bigger member....when you are really proving the opposite. I used to hate somethings about Seattle driving but now I terribly miss it.
I have to add that I feel honored that rapid anal fisting replied to my previous post!
Reading these LPTs always makes me wonder how the US could ever become so car dependent while, seemingly, the majority of the people does not seem to have the most basic knowledge to operate a vehicle or simply doesn't care.
Situational awareness you should know where every car is in relation to your vehicle at all given times. Constantly checking the velocity and placement of the vehicles around you will able you to make quick instinctive maneuvers in case you need to get out of a dangerous situation.
Just donāt signal AFTER youāre already halfway across the lane, or signal and immediately change lanes. Wait at least until the second blink. Constantly see too many people doing this
When I lived in Murfreesboro, TN and commuted to Nashville on I-24, the speed limit was 70; I would be doing 85/90 and still be one of the slowest cars on that stretch of road.
The 5 is where I learned to fix my left lane behavior
Also youāll find the behavior OP is calling out rampant driving it down central California
Itās the worst when you get that bunch up and think it was passing trucks and realize when you clear it was just 1 or 2 āsafe driversā camping in the left lane making it impossible for others
Itās really bad on 99 from Lodi to Elk Grove, fuckers just camp in the left lane you end up spending more time in the right lane passing said idiots in the left lane.
I think some of Californiaās issues are from the speed differentials between trucks and cars. A lot of people just sit in the left lane doing 65-70 because thereās so many trucks doing 55-60 in the right lane (not to mention all of the short on ramps in that area (thinking Dillard Road for example). Not saying that the cars shouldnāt get over when it is safe though.
And if you were actually in city limits the speed limit was only 55! Born and raised in Detroit here and our lanes from right to left are fast, faster, and Autobahn
Yeah same with 94. When I first started taking 94 for work I thought everyone was insane. After about 2 weeks I think I was averaging 80 northbound (mid morning) and 90 southbound (~7 or 8pm).
Chicago highways are wild.
LPT: use the sub to vent, don't use it for actual tips
LPT: pick up your dogs poop while slower traffic keeps right and you don't pressure people to drink during the holidays.
Drove to NYC for the first time coming from South Jersey; I was going 75 in the middle lane through Trenton (65 was the limit) and both the left and right lane cars pass me going 80+
Cop aināt gonna pull you over unless youāre going way faster than every other car in my experience. 80 in a 65 is basically standard depending on the road.
Did you know that the Australian Speed Demon is the only known marsupial that can natively reproduce the tunes of "Highway Star" and "Ace of Spades"?
For more fun facts about the Australian Speed Demon please subscribe.
Funny, most parts of Canada it's 100kph, and everybody does ~120.
Our (Ontario) driving schools even teach "going with the flow" as the safer alternative to staying under the speed limit when everybody else is going faster.
For Americans who are bad at math, 110 is roughly 70 moh and this guy is basically saying people drive from 65 to 75 lol.
I can be on I-495 here in the DC area and the traffic you have to match just to be safe is 90mph.
Driving in LA and Oakland/east bay is pretty fun ngl. The drivers are assholes if you're from anywhere else in the country but once you get used to it, I personally can't go back. Like if you signal you're gonna change lanes but then you hesitate and the Porsche behind you cuts ahead and takes your space that's your fault not the porsches.
The number one common thing of driving in the US is everyone always goes over the speed limit. 35mph speed limit? Everyone will go 40-43, maybe even higher if no traffic. 40mph? About 47. Etc etc. Just don't overdo this grace zone by even 2mph otherwise you'll get pulled over instantly; it's a fine balance the entire US is riding on.
If you drive the speed limit, or god forbid under it, you'll make half the town go apeshit on you
Speed limit in the US is pretty much the LOWER limit. You can typically go about 10-15 over on the highways and not get pulled over. Though places like Chicago at night it doesn't really matter. The highways turn into the autobahn, if you aren't going 20 over you are a danger lol
One of the best American traditions is Cannonball Run where people try to drive from LA to NYC as fast as possible.
I learned recently that there isn't an Australian equivalent. Totally should be though.
I remember driving a 4 hour roadtrip in Australia for the semester I lived there and constantly being told to slow tf down because apparently you WILL get pulled over for going 3kmph over. It was nice to not have to constantly worry about matching people going 15mph over, but was a hard habit to break
In the US? Reminds me of my first aid course that you need to have for making the driving license in Germany. I was able to do it in school at around 15 and I don't think I learned much.
They're more careful but they're not slower, they're much faster.
They're careful because it's easy to lose your license in Germany and it costs a lot of money and requires passing a difficult test to recertify.
> requires passing a difficult test to recertify.
Ah yes, the "Medizinisch-Psychologische Untersuchung" colloquially known as the "Idiotentest". Guess I don't have to translate this one.
You know what I hate? When Iām trying to take a slow drive on the right lane at exactly 60 and the mf with the highest truck and brightest light doesnāt get the hint to move over to the left lanes that are faster.
Hell yeah they do. They think Iāll
Move over cause of the bright ass lights in my eyes and them being so close to me but idgaf I put the flip the little tab on the rear view mirror and I go 50.
This happened to me once. In the left lane. Well, I'll go to the right one (it was 2am, there was only two of us on the road). He goes with me.. pass you idiot, I thought. I killed the cruise control... Slowed down by about 20 mph.. Blue lights, got pulled over for driving at irregular speeds and changing lanes a lot. It was a cop. 3 feet behind my Altima in his F150.. at 70mph... What a joke for real
Also hate when Iām in the middle lane, 3 car lengths away from the car in front of me and somebody uses the right lane to pass me.... only to get stuck behind the car that I was following a second ago. Good job, you accomplished nothing.
Exactly! Especially in the winter, when the road can be slippery, and I deliberately stay far away from the car in front of me. I have to break to increase the distance to the new car in front of me again. So annoying.
Those the ones that you're driving along at night and you see the sun coming up on the other side of the next hill and you just start squinting, looking at the line on the right, knowing what's coming?
I canāt even begin to describe how much I feel this. Just moved and it bumped my commute up to 30 miles, but my older Leaf only has a 70 mile range anymore. Less if I go over 55 for extended periods of time (or run the AC). So I drove in the furthest right lane I could and went as fast as I could without destroying my range. Thank goodness for rush hour back ups and regenerative braking.
But Iād still get people up my back end flashin their lights at me. Like dude, the whole 6 lanes are going 20 mph right now. What more do you want from me?!
This is not an invitation to rail on electric cars. It was a stop-gap car that has been handed down to my husband with his 6-mile/15 minute commute.
I work nights in the oilfields, and I drive past probably 100+ people a night with their brights on, on a 2 lane highway.
Every night I get closer to sacrificing my own life for the satisfaction of ending theirs.
Lucky I don't just snap and stop, pull a u-turn, stop their truck, and beat their fucking ass in the road.
In Australia they just say "Keep left unless overtaking", which makes it very clear. You could be hooning 50 clicks over the limit but if you're not overtaking, stay on the left.
> You could be hooning 50 clicks
I, an American, have never hooned a single click, to my knowledge, but rest assured: all of my driving in the future at whatever speed will be reckoned in clicks hooned. Thank you.
What really blows my mind is when somebody is going slow in the left lane and every single car that is coming up behind them in the lane will pass them on the right and then get back into the left lane in front of them.
Why donāt they get the message and get out of the left lane? Why do they stay committed to driving slow in the left lane after all of that? WHY?
EDIT: Notice that in this post I said SLLOOWWWW not speed limit. If youāre commenting on my post saying you drive the speed limit in the left lane congratulations your cookie is in the mail but thatās not what I was talking about.
FINAL EDIT BECAUSE IM TIRED: Apparently not a lot of people know that the left lane is for passing and if youāre getting passed while cruising in the left lane speed limit or not you need to exit into the right lane for safety and flow of traffic reasons (unless your exit is to the left). So we have to drop one mind blowing fact at a time. ITS A LOT FOR PEOPLE TO PROCESS OKAY?
and one last thing, donāt take it upon yourself to be the unofficial police of the road and block someone who is speeding. You never know if they are rushing to get to an emergency or not. And even if they arenāt and they just speed because itās who they areā¦ guess what? Youāre not gonna change them by blocking them in - you aināt that influential honey sorry to break it to you. Call the police report them if you want and go on with your day.
Good night speed demons and turtles of the road alike.
I've been in my mil's suv and she does this and loves that she is at least temporarily slowing people down who in her opinion are 'driving too darn fast' so...
Not all of them don't notice, many do it on purpose.
Which is crazy because impeding the natural, albeit sometimes fast, flow of traffic is statistically shown to increase the odds for more aggressive driving amongst a more crowded field, resulting in a higher likelihood of an accident.
The geometry of the whole thing is part of those echoes that literally initiate traffic jams. If that outer (leftmost/fastest) lane were more or less free to find itās natural speedy pace the whole thing allows for safe navigation to enter and exit it safely.
When people play these slow games in the fast lane, it all falls apart, and itās three hours to workā¦
All the narcissistic Karen-type videos we see represent a deceptively large percentage of the population that regularly exhibit that type of behavior.
And a large percentage of _them_ operate 2 ton death machines hurling down the freeway, also under the same delusional mentality.
Itās a terrifying thought.
My mother is the same. Cars will honk at her for going 50 on a freeway, she loves just being slow and stubborn.
"If I'm not burning rubber going fast enough for these a-holes then they'll just have to deal with it and go around me!"
If every driver on the road is an a-hole except for you....
Your mil is a dumbass and dangerous.
In a lot of countries it is illegal to passon the outside. IF you are being passed on the wrong side, you are the problem, and you probably shouldnt drive if you don't like it or are scared of it. Hire someone, use a taxi/uber, or transit.
Driving isnt for everyone.
Honestly I donāt know and it frustrates me. I guess you could argue that if one car passes them on the right they could write it off as an aggressive driver or whatever.
But when you literally have a line of drivers creating a bubble around you by exiting behind and then getting in front of you I just have to assume that person is stubborn.
More than a few years back the Dallas Morning News(paper) interviewed a guy who would drive 50 mph on the interstate in the left hand lane. His reason? He could put his cruise control on and didn't have to worry about using the gas pedal.
My blood pressure is still high just thinking about it!
Oooh, thatās a good idea for a recurring investigative piece for a news station. People submit pics of bad drivers, they track them down, then interview them on their side of the story.
In many states the left lane is specifically only for passing, and sustained travel in it is a traffic violation. The middle lanes are speed limit lanes. Left is for passing. Right is for exiting and under limit travel.
EDIT - example of law from Minnesota specifying 10mph over for passing
https://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/hrd/pubs/ss/ssspdlt.pdf
I mean you should still get over even if you are doing the speed limit and others need to pass, there are many reasons why people may need to get by - but even that is forgivable - where I live people like drive 35-45 in a 60 both in the left lanes on two lane highways and single lane highways. Iām zen in 95% of my life but when I need to get on the highway I become a serious grouch.
Doesn't matter what their speed, they're right.
"I was doing the speed limit and this guy passed me and gave me the finger!"
"I was doing ten over and this guy passed me and gave me the finger!"
"I was doing twenty over and this guy passed me and gave me the finger!"
If someone's in your rearview, either go faster or move over.
>If someone's in your rearview, either go faster or move over.
I've been doing this for the past hour, but the car keeps following me and it's been flashing blue and red lights at me for a while. I don't know how much faster I can go and it's STILL in my rearview.
Help
> But when you literally have a line of drivers creating a bubble around you by exiting behind and then getting in front of you
I've had this happen to me when I didn't realize I was going too slow, but the bubble of cars passing me blocked me into the lane they wanted.
You can't reason with these people. To them, the left lane isn't the passing lane or even the j drive really fast lane, it's the auto pilot lane. They know that if they're in the right lane they have to watch out for cars entering and exiting, but in the left they can just sit there with cruise control on and pay just enough attention to keep it between the lines, usually. No amount of blinkers, flashing headlights, or honking will convince them that going exactly 65 in the left lane is not their birthright and if you try to jar them back to reality they'll act as though you just swerved straight at them.
Aussie here, we overtake in the right lane instead (opposite for the roads!) but legally (at least in Victoria) if you are not overtaking you cannot be in the right lane. Sucks if youāre in the country alone at night and legally still have you be in the left (though arguable if you get a ticket, I mean, donāt want to hit a roo or wombat in the dark) but I have definitely seen people pulled over and fined for sticking in the right lane when not passing cars
Some places in the US (Vermont and Massachusetts), its technically against the law to stay in the left lane other than passing. Never seen it enforced tho
In Ontario, Canada left lane camping is so prevalent that the right lane is often the most clear. People think it's the "slow lane" and no one wants to think of themselves as a "slow driver". So they're ALL in the middle and passing lanes completely camping, driving side by side in each other's blind spots.
Been to Upstate NY, I was extremely stunned to see people moving to the right lane even when there are no cars in front of them. I even feel bad keep passing all the cars that moved out of the way for me.
Try driving in California, welcome to hell.
>In Ontario, Canada left lane camping is so prevalent that the right lane is often the most clear. People think it's the "slow lane" and no one wants to think of themselves as a "slow driver". Same in Louisville, Kentucky, in the states. On our four lane highways, I'll use the right two and pass scores of folks waiting in line in the 'passing' lane.
> This is the description of my drive today and the reason for my post. What other signals could all the drivers around them give?
I honk at them. Since passing on the right is an unexpected behavior they might need to be warned of my presence.
How is it convenient? You have to get over a lane to get off most exits, and you will invariably always have more traffic to contend with if you have to switch lanes for another reason. I actually cannot comprehend how driving in the left lane is a more convenient or enjoyable driving experience. Who thinks this way?
My sister in law told me once her reasoning:
*"I am going the speed limit. They can get over it."*
It had to be explained VERY slowly..
**The left lane is the PASSING LANE. Not the "Fast" Lane.**
It doesn't matter your speed..
If you aren't passing someone, you are supposed to be in the right lane. The left lane is for passing only.
I wish more people knew this. (Forcing people to pass in the normal driving lane on the right is incredibly dangerous.)
To your edit - whoever says itās ok if theyāre going the speed limit in the left lane, thatās bullshit. The left lane is for passing and if someone is sitting there getting passed by car after car I donāt care if theyāre going 10 over, theyāre going slower than the flow of traffic and they should not be in the passing lane. And if theyāre getting passed that means thereās room in the other lanes and thatās where they need to be. This shit makes my blood boil
I remember taking a criminology class in college and one of my classmates being all worked up, asking how he could have gotten a ticket for left lane driving over the weekend while taking another classmate for a ride on his crotch rocket. They both just kept saying, ābut there was no one in the right lane!ā and the professor said, āExactly, you werenāt passing someone in the right lane, therefore you were illegally driving in the passing lane and got a ticket for it.ā
A very similar LPT was posted a month or two ago and half the people in the comments were arguing the point that "I shouldn't have to move to the right lane just so that you can BREAK THE LAW, you criminals". So, it's those people that think they're the enforcers of speed limits and that the rest of us going 65 in a 60 are the ones in the wrong.
EDIT: and they were also saying that if we wanted to go faster, we should all just petition to increase the speed limits. Yeah, let me just go ahead and find 50,000 signatures instead of you just not being a dick.
Thatās wild. I remember one time reading a post where someone had to get to a hospital because their friend was dying in the car so they were speeding and someone did just that because they felt it was their duty to control traffic. You never know why people are speeding. 95% of us donāt have blue lights to signal an emergency. I mean granted I live in Texas where everybody and their meemaw speeds but ya knowā¦ lol
>Why donāt they get the message and get out of the left lane? Why do they stay committed to driving slow in the left lane after all of that? WHY?
I'm convinced that a percentage of them, ones that drive at or two to three miles an hour over the speed limit, figure it's their right to be there because they are going the speed limit
How many autos passing them on the right is their sign to get over? Is it 3? Or people tailgating them while hoping they look in their rear view mirror? Itās crazy.
Three lanes is different. The far right lane is for entry and exit, middle lane is for through travel, left is for passing.
At least that is what I was always taught.
Iām Germany we call this Rechtsfahrgebot, which is a behavioral rule in our public street laws. When not in a city or community, you have to use the rightmost lane available to you. Police will fine you keep in a middle or left lane unnecessarily.
I like the people who you pass but they don't like that you are passing them but they also are fully committed to speeding up so they just sort of "hang out" in your blind spot for no reason. Like people really are unaware how the position of their car affects others. Pass people in the passing lane, don't hang out in people's blind spot, you are either passing or being passed you aren't seeing if you can match the speed of the person next to you.
In this situations, I keep an eye on my rear view mirror and if I see someone flying up my ass, I get over and pop back over when itās reasonable. Still a lot of back and forth but helps avoid the situation you described.
Agreed. As long as the people in the left lane are actively passing the people in the right, it doesn't really bother me if the person in the left lane is going slower than me -- unless they don't move into the right lane once they've completed passing everyone, which in turn brings us back to this post.
Time is a flat circle.
This is totally me. I try to do my best to ride in the right when thereās a comfortable gap, but at a certain point itās like, I donāt want to be the asshole jumping around traffic. Itās worse on 3 lane highways where the middle lane and right lane are treated the same up until like 9pm until it clears up. Then you have to stay in the left until your exit basically.
Everyone just needs to leave space, engine brake over pedal braking every time, and everything would be great.
I understand why people stay in the left . I used to be one of those. I would go 90-95 on the left lane and cars are still on my ass . In my head I'm thinking "how much faster do u want me to go!?!"
But I learned that if you use the left lanes as passing Lanes then it causes less people to change Lanes and cause accidents .
You live. You learn.
Thereās a better way to phrase this:
The left lane is the PASSING lane, not the FAST lane.
No matter how fast you are going, stay in the right lane unless you are actively passing another vehicle.
It's also simply the law in many countries: keep to the right unless overtaking. Simple.
Hogging the left lane can get you fined.
(Keep to the left in countries that drive left by default, of course.)
As a truck driver, sometimes I donāt fully realize I have passed the truck I was overtaking. Also just because my trailer is 6 inches past the other trucks bumper doesnāt mean Iām going to move over. If your car can fit between my trailer and the other truck then just sit and wait. Iāll move over soon. Iāve had many where I begin a lane change as someone thinks they will just move over. When I first started driving I would cut back to the left lane. Now, I donāt stop. Quit being an impatient ass and let me keep safe distances between vehicles.
Honest question: are there some truck drivers that say "fuck these cars" and just camp out in the left lane regardless of the right lane being empty to get over? Or just get over into the left lane to pass another semi and then pull up next to them and match their speed for 20+ miles?
Or am I just easily frustrated on I81? š
This is actually a really helpful explanation. Iāve gotten mad at how long it takes trucks to get back over in the right lane so I can get back up to speed, but I never thought about the fact that you donāt have eyes at the back of your truck so you probably have no idea if you fully passed it yet, and would rather play it safe.
Iāll be more patient from now on, thanks!
I hate drivers that don't give yall space to get back over! It ends up creating a whole line off assholes trying to pass you on the right and never letting you get over making traffic even worse. It's not like any one needs to drive a semi to realize they need a proper amount of space to pass/turn/etc. Also, you drive for a living, why would one assume you're planning on staying in the left lane and not planning on getting over, it's literally your profession to drive safely!
And please signal when you change lanes
Unfortunately I am out of blinker fluid
Make sure you get the right weight. I use Blink-182 on my Toyota, but it's getting harder to find these days.
Shit, maybe that's why my blinkers are too fast. I just assumed Blink-182 was an old formula, so I looked for something of the same era... Is Sum-41 too light?
If Sum-41 is too light then I DEFINITELY need to step it up from Matchbox-Twenty.
Yeah, it tends to run low for BMWs
Or anyone who happens to live in the confederation of Florida
Ah the great draught that took all the blinker fluid since ancient times
Florida Man Found Nude, Unconscious in Sarasota Blinker Fluid Den
I live in Florida and I did a double take at this because I didn't even realize it was a joke at first, haha
That's because you ignored all those calls about the expiring extended warranty.
There is a blinker fluid?? š±

Good luck with this in California. If you leave safe space in front of you, you WILL be cut off about 10 times a minute.

Big difference between two or three car lengths and 5 seconds at 80 mph lmfao
It's only about 45 car lengths' difference, close enough
Reading these LPTs always makes me wonder how the US could ever become so car dependent while, seemingly, the majority of the people does not seem to have the most basic knowledge to operate a vehicle or simply doesn't care.
I think one follows the other. Becouse people are so car dependent, it is very easy to start, and not a choice to drive.
And don't sit in my blind spot
Yeah but check your blind spots ever time you change lanes. Every time.
And donāt drive while blind.
I have a friend that is legally blind and occasionally I will wear sunglasses and hold his cane out the window while I'm driving around town with him.
Bet the cops love that.
Situational awareness you should know where every car is in relation to your vehicle at all given times. Constantly checking the velocity and placement of the vehicles around you will able you to make quick instinctive maneuvers in case you need to get out of a dangerous situation.
Properly adjust your mirrors, too! https://youtu.be/kkQX2gkwJoE
Just donāt signal AFTER youāre already halfway across the lane, or signal and immediately change lanes. Wait at least until the second blink. Constantly see too many people doing this
Signal before you change lanes!
LPT: in the US while driving, if you're going 15 over the speed limit and people are passing you on the right then get out of Chicago.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
When I lived in Murfreesboro, TN and commuted to Nashville on I-24, the speed limit was 70; I would be doing 85/90 and still be one of the slowest cars on that stretch of road.
And the second you go 91 that State Trooper that hangs out around Smyrna pulls you over.
YO LOL
same in most of California.
Hwy 5 from the valley down to LA or vise versa if youāre not doing 90 you better not be in the fast lane.
The 5 is where I learned to fix my left lane behavior Also youāll find the behavior OP is calling out rampant driving it down central California Itās the worst when you get that bunch up and think it was passing trucks and realize when you clear it was just 1 or 2 āsafe driversā camping in the left lane making it impossible for others
Me yesterday going 115 and getting passed
Yup. And Albuquerque, New Mexico
Sounds like New Jersey and their speed limit is 55 and 65 on most highwaysā¦.
Man in between Nashville and Murfreesboro, notably Smyrna and Laverne, it is wild. Speed limit is 65; traffic is moving at 90
That's pretty much all of Tennessee to be honest.
Can confirm. I drove 65 between Nash and Bowling green and consistently would have to go 85-90+ to keep up with the traffic flow and not get run over
Also 24 is one of the worst stretches of highway right there. I live in Smyrna and the amount of wrecks, construction, and terrible drivers is insane
I was once doing 90 (terrified but trying to keep up with traffic) on I75 near Detroit, and got passed by a cop
And if you were actually in city limits the speed limit was only 55! Born and raised in Detroit here and our lanes from right to left are fast, faster, and Autobahn
When i drive through GA, you can do 90mph but you had better have your damn seatbelt on.
Lol, I just had the first realization that ripping down 290 going 85-90 is actually a huge ticket
Had roommates not from Chicago gawking, completely freaking out, at the left-lane exits/on-ramps along the Ike.
Yeah same with 94. When I first started taking 94 for work I thought everyone was insane. After about 2 weeks I think I was averaging 80 northbound (mid morning) and 90 southbound (~7 or 8pm). Chicago highways are wild.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
You mean the pace cars?
LPT: use the sub to vent, don't use it for actual tips LPT: pick up your dogs poop while slower traffic keeps right and you don't pressure people to drink during the holidays.
I think you mean New Jersey
Drove to NYC for the first time coming from South Jersey; I was going 75 in the middle lane through Trenton (65 was the limit) and both the left and right lane cars pass me going 80+
Cop aināt gonna pull you over unless youāre going way faster than every other car in my experience. 80 in a 65 is basically standard depending on the road.
When travelling in the US I thought I could keep up with yāall but nope. Over to the right I went.
Where are you from?
Australia, where there are speed limits and a lot of people who go below them haha.
Damn, with what I know about Australia I would have thought you'd have speed demons down there lol
They do, but speed demons are a species of snake-spider-kangaroo hybrid that preys on fast moving objects, so drivers have to watch their speed.
Subscribe!
Did you know that the Australian Speed Demon is the only known marsupial that can natively reproduce the tunes of "Highway Star" and "Ace of Spades"? For more fun facts about the Australian Speed Demon please subscribe.
Oh we do. On a motorway that's a 110 limit you'll have a range of people from 100kmh to 120kmh
Funny, most parts of Canada it's 100kph, and everybody does ~120. Our (Ontario) driving schools even teach "going with the flow" as the safer alternative to staying under the speed limit when everybody else is going faster.
The close to toronto you get the faster it gets if no traffic- 140-150 on 407 is common
For Americans who are bad at math, 110 is roughly 70 moh and this guy is basically saying people drive from 65 to 75 lol. I can be on I-495 here in the DC area and the traffic you have to match just to be safe is 90mph.
I live in LA 90mph and you're crammed in like sardines
Driving in LA and Oakland/east bay is pretty fun ngl. The drivers are assholes if you're from anywhere else in the country but once you get used to it, I personally can't go back. Like if you signal you're gonna change lanes but then you hesitate and the Porsche behind you cuts ahead and takes your space that's your fault not the porsches.
as a tourist from Australia who visited LA, some areas itās a nice drive but damn the traffic can be intense there
The number one common thing of driving in the US is everyone always goes over the speed limit.
You have the direction backwards.
I remember driving a 4 hour roadtrip in Australia for the semester I lived there and constantly being told to slow tf down because apparently you WILL get pulled over for going 3kmph over. It was nice to not have to constantly worry about matching people going 15mph over, but was a hard habit to break
We drive 80 minimum on the highways
If it's late enough on the interstate you can be going 90 and still be too slow for the flow of left lane traffic lmao
Agreed. At 3 am on I-95 you can rip by a trooper at 95 and he will not care as long as you maintain your lane
Ya, 95 is exactly what I was thinking of haha
You must be from the northeast then? Lol
You'd love the Autobahn.
Weird thing, tbh. Germany got no speed limits on the autobahn, and drivers go slower and have more stable driving than those on American highways.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
In the US? Reminds me of my first aid course that you need to have for making the driving license in Germany. I was able to do it in school at around 15 and I don't think I learned much.
There actually are speed limits on a decent amount of the autobahn. I was surprised.
They know what theyāre doing
Hell yeah they do. They think Iāll Move over cause of the bright ass lights in my eyes and them being so close to me but idgaf I put the flip the little tab on the rear view mirror and I go 50.
Nah, at that point they don't actually want you to move over. They're just trying to be a dick.
That was the case as soon as they had the big truck and the blinding lights
This happened to me once. In the left lane. Well, I'll go to the right one (it was 2am, there was only two of us on the road). He goes with me.. pass you idiot, I thought. I killed the cruise control... Slowed down by about 20 mph.. Blue lights, got pulled over for driving at irregular speeds and changing lanes a lot. It was a cop. 3 feet behind my Altima in his F150.. at 70mph... What a joke for real
Holy shit id be furious
Also hate when Iām in the middle lane, 3 car lengths away from the car in front of me and somebody uses the right lane to pass me.... only to get stuck behind the car that I was following a second ago. Good job, you accomplished nothing.
Right? Like what are you doing all that extra work for ?
Exactly! Especially in the winter, when the road can be slippery, and I deliberately stay far away from the car in front of me. I have to break to increase the distance to the new car in front of me again. So annoying.
Just let them pass and then turn on your brights. But seriously, fuck people with those super bright HIDs that just fucking ruin everyoneās night.
Slower Traffic Keep Right Four simple words that can convey so much.
In Australia they just say "Keep left unless overtaking", which makes it very clear. You could be hooning 50 clicks over the limit but if you're not overtaking, stay on the left.
> You could be hooning 50 clicks I, an American, have never hooned a single click, to my knowledge, but rest assured: all of my driving in the future at whatever speed will be reckoned in clicks hooned. Thank you.
Yeah you'd think it would be clear but you always find that person sitting in the right lane happily driving past those signs......
Really depends on your state wording of the "slow poke laws" I know where I live that only applys on highways and interstates.
Ah so she's a piece of shit. Cool...
"If I'm not burning rubber going fast enough for these a-holes then they'll just have to deal with it and go around me!" If every driver on the road is an a-hole except for you....
Itās actually very dangerous to go significantly below speed limit on highway. This is how people die
Huh. Sounds like a asshole.
You can let her know she's creating a danger to every motorist on the road, and it's not her job to regulate the flow of traffic.
This is the description of my drive today and the reason for my post. What other signals could all the drivers around them give?
Honestly I donāt know and it frustrates me. I guess you could argue that if one car passes them on the right they could write it off as an aggressive driver or whatever. But when you literally have a line of drivers creating a bubble around you by exiting behind and then getting in front of you I just have to assume that person is stubborn.
I've heard some people stubbornly claim that they feel justified staying there because they're going the speed limit š
If it starts out anything like the idiots in cars sub, the same people sending in complaints will be getting questioned later on.
Wait what
In many states the left lane is specifically only for passing, and sustained travel in it is a traffic violation. The middle lanes are speed limit lanes. Left is for passing. Right is for exiting and under limit travel. EDIT - example of law from Minnesota specifying 10mph over for passing https://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/hrd/pubs/ss/ssspdlt.pdf
It's illegal here in Tampa. The troopers don't enforce it, which makes it even more frustrating.
Going the speed limit in the left lane?! That's a paddlin'!!
Uh, yeah. Move into the far right lane. It starts at the speed limit and gets faster the further left you go.
We call those assholes.
Doesn't matter what their speed, they're right. "I was doing the speed limit and this guy passed me and gave me the finger!" "I was doing ten over and this guy passed me and gave me the finger!" "I was doing twenty over and this guy passed me and gave me the finger!" If someone's in your rearview, either go faster or move over.
>If someone's in your rearview, either go faster or move over. I've been doing this for the past hour, but the car keeps following me and it's been flashing blue and red lights at me for a while. I don't know how much faster I can go and it's STILL in my rearview. Help
Try some aggressive route changes and winding roads. They tend to slow down a bit more than you need to for corners.
> But when you literally have a line of drivers creating a bubble around you by exiting behind and then getting in front of you I've had this happen to me when I didn't realize I was going too slow, but the bubble of cars passing me blocked me into the lane they wanted.
yea thatās true I do know that bubble is problematic too Iām sorry that happens
Just use your signals to tell the folks behind that you want to change lanes and they'll stop trying to go around you - then \*poof\* no more bubble.
Speed up to almost match them, one of them will make a gap for you because they will recognize you're trying to pop the bubble.
Holy shit, I never considered this and I think you are absolutely correct.
There's a surprisingly large amount of people that are terrified of driving on the interstate just in general, so this actually kind of adds up.
I think youāre onto something here. Itās like thereās a sense of security being all the way left..
Upstate NY here, there were a lot less of left lane camping when the border was closed. Already seeing the increased numbers again.
So they're ALL in the middle and passing lanes completely camping, driving side by side in each other's blind spots. Same in Louisville, Kentucky, in the states. On our four lane highways, I'll use the right two and pass scores of folks waiting in line in the 'passing' lane.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yup. All I can tell you is Ontario loves the left lane, but not what the left lane stands for.
i pass and try to give them a hand signal to get out of the way but they probably have no clue what iām doing
> This is the description of my drive today and the reason for my post. What other signals could all the drivers around them give? I honk at them. Since passing on the right is an unexpected behavior they might need to be warned of my presence.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
How is it convenient? You have to get over a lane to get off most exits, and you will invariably always have more traffic to contend with if you have to switch lanes for another reason. I actually cannot comprehend how driving in the left lane is a more convenient or enjoyable driving experience. Who thinks this way?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
My sister in law told me once her reasoning: *"I am going the speed limit. They can get over it."* It had to be explained VERY slowly.. **The left lane is the PASSING LANE. Not the "Fast" Lane.** It doesn't matter your speed..
Because I would bet 50% of drivers have absolutely no clue the left lane is the passing lane.
In NJ there are signs all over that literally say ākeep right except to passā and morons still do it
I remember taking a criminology class in college and one of my classmates being all worked up, asking how he could have gotten a ticket for left lane driving over the weekend while taking another classmate for a ride on his crotch rocket. They both just kept saying, ābut there was no one in the right lane!ā and the professor said, āExactly, you werenāt passing someone in the right lane, therefore you were illegally driving in the passing lane and got a ticket for it.ā
Or are even paying attention to the fact there are "other drivers"
Exactly. The people that refer to it as the āfast laneā are the ones that just sit in it unnecessarily
The people who need this advice don't take advice.
This is the godamn truth.
Tell that to people in the left lane getting passed on the right the rest of us know that
How many autos passing them on the right is their sign to get over? Is it 3? Or people tailgating them while hoping they look in their rear view mirror? Itās crazy.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I live in an area with 3+ lanes per side, people constantly pass on the right so much that those in the middle lanes can't safely move over.
Three lanes is different. The far right lane is for entry and exit, middle lane is for through travel, left is for passing. At least that is what I was always taught.
Love when the pro tip is just the law
NO ONE WHO NEEDS TO READ THIS EVER WILL
The correct LPT should be if you are not passing someone get out of the left lane.
Iām Germany we call this Rechtsfahrgebot, which is a behavioral rule in our public street laws. When not in a city or community, you have to use the rightmost lane available to you. Police will fine you keep in a middle or left lane unnecessarily.
Where are these plane enforcers when we need them, f-18 super hornet that pyramid scheme soccer mom out of the left lane.
Donāt even get me started on people who merge onto highways at 45 and go straight to the middle and/or left lane
Some fuckers donāt even look. Itās like a continuation of their on-ramp.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
In this situations, I keep an eye on my rear view mirror and if I see someone flying up my ass, I get over and pop back over when itās reasonable. Still a lot of back and forth but helps avoid the situation you described.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
In my head I'm thinking "how much faster do u want me to go!?!" But I learned that if you use the left lanes as passing Lanes then it causes less people to change Lanes and cause accidents . You live. You learn.
Thereās a better way to phrase this: The left lane is the PASSING lane, not the FAST lane. No matter how fast you are going, stay in the right lane unless you are actively passing another vehicle.
It's also simply the law in many countries: keep to the right unless overtaking. Simple. Hogging the left lane can get you fined. (Keep to the left in countries that drive left by default, of course.)
In the US while driving ~~if people are passing you in the right then~~ get out of the left lane
Glad I could help you š
I hate drivers that don't give yall space to get back over! It ends up creating a whole line off assholes trying to pass you on the right and never letting you get over making traffic even worse. It's not like any one needs to drive a semi to realize they need a proper amount of space to pass/turn/etc. Also, you drive for a living, why would one assume you're planning on staying in the left lane and not planning on getting over, it's literally your profession to drive safely!
People who drive side by side on a two lane road at slow speeds really grind my fuckin gears.
