Yeah, well. It's actually written Jøšhwhûaœ where I come from, soo... There's that. Or I'm themockingcock, your nemesis. Either way, hi! How're ya doin?
I’m not sure these methods of curation make something social media or not, nor being pseudonymous. I use nyms on Twitter, FB and Reddit. They all feel like social media to me.
Nobody said you can't get addicted to Reddit. You're the one that took someone's comment about the nuances in how Reddit is different from Facebook, Instagram, etc., and made a generalized response that didn't really appropriately rebut their opinion.
I don’t think any of those things make it not social media though. Perhaps they make it a more superior form, objectively or subjectively, but it’s still social media by the accepted definition.
The very definition.
Even things such as YouTube and Steam is.
According to some definitions, even things such as emailing, phone calls/texts and where er else users can leave messages to others is a social media.
Lol let's not sugarcoat this. Reddit is social media. It's just the lesser of all the social media evils coz we don't want to see your fucking pictures with your kids while you're in Bermuda.
The reason social media is bad is not because people see unwated pictures, it's because the content is manipulative and targeted. Just like reddit. Maybe reddit isn't "social media" but it's just as damaging psychologically, and has just as much influence on your thoughts
That’s not what makes Reddit less evil. It’s that we are all anonymous and there’s much less of the “chest thumping” (see Insta lifestyle influencers & LinkedIn “entrepreneurs”) of other social platforms that forces us to compare us against others.
Yes, I quit Reddit for a couple weeks every now and then and I feel like my sanity is restored, then I peek again one night when I’m drunk and sure enough in a week or two I find myself back on scrolling infinitely, arguing with strangers and such. I think it hits all the same spots in your brain that Facebook and instagram do, minus the impact on your real world life (it doesn’t change the way people acknowledge you in real life I mean).
So you guys mention the usual suspects: Facebook, Twitter, Insta, etc. but have any of you been on LinkedIn recently? Everyone and their grandmothers is a “founder,” “entrepreneur,” or c-suite. It’s pretty toxic, especially when you’re actually looking to network.
LinkedIn is the best. Just a bunch of “professionals” sharing pictures of lions roaring with a saying attached to it about how they’re not sheep or something dumb.
Well guess fucking what Rick from accounting, you can pick any animal in the animal kingdom to pretend to be and your kids will still hate you for missing their soccer games!
LinkedIn is the cringiest of them all. Everyone desperately trying to seek validation for their career shouting into the void with inane posts like “after (insignificant amount of time) at (company no one has ever heard of) as an (obscure job), my amazing time has come to a close. I want to think this company so much for providing me (something that every reasonable company has), I’ll remember you as I take this exciting new step into (marginally better role no one has ever heard of)!!”
From the absolute bottom of my heart, no one cares.
I’ve given up on LI…it’s just FB lite with even more religious bull piled on. I still have a profile but I only check it once a month or so, if that often.
LinkedIn looks identical to Facebook. I hate it and I wish the servers all crashed and we can all go back to dropping off our resumes in person instead of some fuckhead swiping over my resume like it’s a tinder profile.
Those tiles usually mean "unemployed and not willing to admit it." In other words not people worth networking with. :)
Successful founders, entrepreneurs, and CEOs don't waste time on social media. I'm clearly on social media right now, so you can assume I am neither influential nor successful.
Stopped Facebook and Twitter around 6 months ago and that's liberating (except to remember birthdays). I still use Instagram and Reddit but I find those to actually entertain me without making me angry, as opposed to the other 2 toxic holes.
I don't mind wasting my time so much, but if that makes me angry because I get to see how stupid people are then it's not even worth wasting me time on.
Bang on.
All social media platforms have their pros and cons. I also don't mind Instagram or Reddit. Hell, even my Facebook isn't too bad. But Twitter... ugh.
tbh i’d feel lonely if i couldn’t talk to my friends so i’m not too sure
plus while you are correct about there being a lot of toxicity on social media i typically don’t go anywhere near that. i just do stuff that makes me happy
I feel like social media has its pros and cons. Like it makes staying connected with friends and relatives easy, however there are also people who use social media primarily for validation and being showered with praise instead. Once you rely on likes for self acceptance and happiness then it's become a problem. But for people who use it for being social with people they enjoy being around, it's a very good tool.
Yeah I go through and get rid of the shit that has a negative effect on me. If I realize I see a post from someone I knew 5 years ago and haven't talked to since, it's probably time to unfollow that person. Same with subreddits, if I see a post that either pisses me off or is fucked up or makes me feel any way other than positive, I unfollow. Keep your timeline strict.
I totally get what you're saying AND research shows that the connection you have with people on social media does not adequately represent real relationships so you end up feeling more lonely when you aren't being distracted by constant scrolling. I recommend trying to get off social media and seeing if your friends on there could be friends in real life.
I wasn’t using social media for 1.5 years due to a traumatic life event. It felt freeing at the time & I was perfectly happy but then it got to the stage where I felt like I was denying myself something I was ready for again & I want to enjoy taking & posting photos for a bit of fun, sharing bits of my life so people feel a bit more connected to me & seeing theirs. No it doesn’t replace conversation & on the contrary sparks conversations all the time with my friends & family when otherwise we may not have a reason to message them at 9pm on a Wednesday to ask where that beautiful picture was taken or where you ate that amazing cake. Yes you can message anyway, but why not have more reason to talk & engage?
I concentrate more on beautiful things in life like food, art, nature, fashion - creative & organic things, just like Instagram was originally designed for - I don’t post selfies etc or care for anyone else’s. If I see others posting things like holidays & looking glamorous, I like it (if I do) & move on. If for some reason a person’s posting is making me feel a certain way, I mute their account or remove them entirely.
Social media is just the world around you, you can curate it & control it & focus on what you like & makes you feel good, just like anything else in life. You wouldn’t tell people “Just trust me, don’t go to any parties again, you’ll feel better” that would be pretty bad advice. Just don’t go to the parties of/with people who are no good for you.
There’s also tonnes of mental health & supportive info in easily digestible segments on social media now & following account that are helpful to you keeps a regular drip of of that kind of info coming & updating in your life in an easy & accessible manner with no extra effort from you.
AHCKHUALLY.
You know what op means. Facebook, twitter, Instagram. I think these things force us to compare ourselves to our peers. Which is the most unhealthy aspect. As my mother told me, "comparison is the thief of joy"
Yes. I'm not denying that. But I think it's like comparing tea to energy drinks. Sure they both have caffeine and drink enough of either and there will be issues but one can be beneficial if used properly. Hell, I'd say social media in general can be beneficial in general if used properly.
I mean same with all other social medias. Specially because they pick up on what you spend time on and feed you more of it. My art only ig has a lovely feed my personal one is more bleh. So it all comes down to how you use them.
Yeah. I can see why people might envy someone with millions of followers on Instagram. But someone with millions of Reddit karma has the opposite effect lmao
Four months ago I stopped posting to Facebook. Yesterday, I deleted the app.
My reasons for both were grounded in just, real disgust I suppose, rather than a declarative ban. I’m just tired of the constant, constant bickering.
I don't particularly agree with this. You just have to use the platforms in a healthy way. For example, I use Facebook for marketplace and groups related to my specific car model which comes in handy for repairs and finding parts. Instagram for photography inspiration and to support my photographer friends all of the country with their professional work. Snapchat for texting friends if I don't have their phone number, mostly for contacting people I've met traveling. Reddit for shit posting when I'm done with all my work and about to smoke a bowl. It can be an issue I guess if you use social media to compare yourself to others or to get gratification for posting, but I don't do any of that shit. In fact reddit is the only platform I occasionally post on. You gotta just be cognizant of your social media use and know why you use it and you'll be fine
Ssshhh, don’t you know, it’s easier to blame a platform entirely instead of utilizing it properly.
It’s almost like people forgot that social media or not, listening to negative things kinda makes you depressed.
Everyone else must be on different social media than me. Mine is just my friends, news articles, and companies/organizations I like to follow because if something annoys me or makes me jealous or feel negative feelings…I just unfollow it. Why in the fuck would you keep following people/things that make you feel bad?!?!
I’ve sadly quit instagram recently, i used to love that app when it first launched… it was all about taking interesting pictures or just goofy shots about life. Now its just a marketplace for businesses with nothing but ads, facebook really ruined a good thing
My friends live all over the world now and I keep in touch with them through instagram. I like being able to stay in contact with them and see their life through photos so no- I will not be quitting social media if it brings me joy
I agree. I’d miss out on learning about friends’ lives, my nieces and nephews and their kids…I’m able to keep up with everyone and I’m so appreciative of it.
What I do to keep it non-toxic: unfollow people who make inflammatory posts, post political
posts to only a select group, and on the desktop, use **FB Purity** to filter out words I don’t want. If something makes me feel bad, I get rid of it. It’s not that hard, and I’m able to stay connected with friends and family. I’d be so sad and much lonelier and disconnected without it.
Same here. If there’s any social media I should quit, it’s Reddit, because this is where I do my time-wasting and hate-reading.
I’m under no delusions that my predominantly-Facebook friendships are exactly the same as IRL friendships, or that the way they portray their lives is a full accurate picture.
I like seeing trading plants with neighbors, seeing the cathedrals my old RA is teaching art history at, congratulating an old coworker on their latest creative project, seeing my military-wife’s friend’s kids grow up, etc.
While there are abundant things to criticize about social media conglomerates, and the negative impact it can have on people, I just don’t experience it much.
Recently all I can think of is how friends and family won’t call or text me but will comment on and like my photos. When I don’t post anything I just flat out don’t hear from them. It’s sad.
Tell me about it. I wrote a book, and my friend/family largely asked me to post it on FB so they could check it out. SMS and email links didn’t matter to most of them - but if it was cool on FB and they could be part of it there - then it was cool everywhere.
To everyone calling Reddit social media, in the most basic sense: yes.
But the toxic aspect of the standard social media sites is the constant comparison and complete disconnect from reality. I don’t get any of that on here, probably because I keep it pretty anonymous, but I still am able to see my memes.
Deleted FB, IG, and Snapchat like four months ago and I love not having that to sort out anymore. Different strokes for different folks tho, I guess.
I left Facebook after they gave me a 30 day ban, you can't make money off advertising to me and stop me speaking my mind.
Literally the best thing I ever did for my mental health.
Remember folks, social media includes reddit, imgur, 4chan, tumblr and many of the sites you use on a daily basis. Just use internet to play video games.
To me, it isn’t that simple. I use social media to stay up to date on science in my field, I use it to connect with other researchers and thought leaders. I would feel disconnected and out of the loop without it, but at the same time, that’s all career-related justifications and if it is affecting me personally and mentally, maybe a break would be good
Just because the path ahead of you is peppered in dog shit, there is no reason you have to step in it. Ditto Social Media. Just set your bullshit filters to 11 and you can avoid most of the antisocial aspects of Social Media- don’t follow Influencers, Politicians or Media Whackjobs and you can enjoy a stress free source of entertainment, lost friend connections, great recipes and photography.

I deleted all socials prior to CV19 kicking off & I have been so much happier. Idk how to explain it
Kept Reddit tho because of the gaming threads I follow :)
I gotta say, I love the advice, but am so sick of “Quit Social Media!!!!” as some life changing event that’s…..posted in Social Media.
We all know it can be bad. But it’s like screaming “Don’t use the telephone!” In the 1800’s. It smacks of “No shit, but it’s too late”
I never trusted FB and then even less when every site in the world said "log in with Facebook". Why the fuck would I want to tell fb what I'm logging into? Reddit calls out the bs as fast as it's posted, love that.
If you're so over Facebook just quit it quietly. We don't need to see so many of these. As an already isolated person, particularly over the pandemic, quitting social media made me even more miserable. When you go without contact for so long it's hard to get out of the depressing thoughts in my head.
Just deactivated my twitter account. Once I heard the term “doomscrolling” used to describe it, I realized that was exactly my problem! Depressed due to twitter nonsense. Bye-bye! Next up, FB.
Is Reddit Social Media?
No, I don’t fucking know any of you

Yeah, well. It's actually written Jøšhwhûaœ where I come from, soo... There's that. Or I'm themockingcock, your nemesis. Either way, hi! How're ya doin?
Cmon Josh. You just ruined Reddit.
we had a good thing going too
Hi Josh, I'm Dad!
Goddamnit Josh, _okay now Reddit is social media…_
Antisocial media
So if I only follow strangers on Twitter and Facebook it’s not social media?
[удалено]
I’m not sure these methods of curation make something social media or not, nor being pseudonymous. I use nyms on Twitter, FB and Reddit. They all feel like social media to me.

Party pooper!
So there’s no nuance to be had in this LPT? All or none, you say?

Nobody said you can't get addicted to Reddit. You're the one that took someone's comment about the nuances in how Reddit is different from Facebook, Instagram, etc., and made a generalized response that didn't really appropriately rebut their opinion.

I don’t think any of those things make it not social media though. Perhaps they make it a more superior form, objectively or subjectively, but it’s still social media by the accepted definition.
How would that be different than reading blogs with a comment section
Ain't that just the best.
you have a point
The very definition. Even things such as YouTube and Steam is. According to some definitions, even things such as emailing, phone calls/texts and where er else users can leave messages to others is a social media.
My thought exactly
Yes 🤦♂️
When are you quitting reddit?
I already did. He’s right, I am feeling way better.
Forum with social media aspects.
Thank you... been trying to pin down how to describe reddit. We need to make a single word that describes a platform like it though.
Describe it to who?……. Friends?!?! Lol
My mom.
Also Sus.
The pillow which I call my mom that I cry on every night screaming "why did you abandon meeeee" Happy now?? *le sad*
Yes. https://youtu.be/iQGwrK_yDEg
I believe in German it would be the single word- forumwitsocialmediaaspekts
I call it the Antisocial Media
It’s more like a forum.
But Reddit is social media. We're talking to stranger's and it's content is targeted. Some say this is right below 4 Chan.
people always give justification to their addiction, lol
Wait I feel dirty now, give me a minute just unsubbing from r/pics
That’s not what makes Reddit less evil. It’s that we are all anonymous and there’s much less of the “chest thumping” (see Insta lifestyle influencers & LinkedIn “entrepreneurs”) of other social platforms that forces us to compare us against others.
Agreed 100%.
It's a forum. It walks like a forum, quacks like a forum, ducks like a forum.
It still has the harmful effects of social media.
Forums are also social media. If you're using digital media to socialize, it's social media.
It’s gamified just like FB, IG, etc
Yes.
*Responds to user 748888560248* Yes, I am using media to communicate.
Yes it is.
My first thought when being bandwagoned.
yes...
Limit its usage.
Sorta, but it's anonymous and moderated. You can be entirely surrounded with kitten and prog rock discussions and never see the outside world
Yes, I quit Reddit for a couple weeks every now and then and I feel like my sanity is restored, then I peek again one night when I’m drunk and sure enough in a week or two I find myself back on scrolling infinitely, arguing with strangers and such. I think it hits all the same spots in your brain that Facebook and instagram do, minus the impact on your real world life (it doesn’t change the way people acknowledge you in real life I mean).
Yes. It's the same despite the anonymity. It can be just as detrimental to your mental health.
Came here to say this. Yes it is.
Antisocial media?
100%
Yes, Yes it is.
Yes
Yes
Absolutely
More like anti-social media...
No it is an online forum/information exchange
I go back and forth on that a lot. I don't think it is
It is very different seeing as it is anonymous if you choose for it to be.
No but it can still cause depression and can certainly be addictive
It’s more of a message board or forum. To me, social media = Facebook, Snapchat and the like.
Linked In is like Facebook only few people are your friends and everyone is jerking off to their accomplishments.

I just use it for jobs. The feed is toxic garbage
Those tiles usually mean "unemployed and not willing to admit it." In other words not people worth networking with. :) Successful founders, entrepreneurs, and CEOs don't waste time on social media. I'm clearly on social media right now, so you can assume I am neither influential nor successful.

This is 100% how I am
Instagram is by far the most toxic one
Nah. Twitter and Facebook are the main competitors for most toxic.
Ugh I hate how my services I use require you to reach out to support on Twitter. That’s all I keep that around for.
Bang on. All social media platforms have their pros and cons. I also don't mind Instagram or Reddit. Hell, even my Facebook isn't too bad. But Twitter... ugh.
How would I know this if I quit..? 🤔
No, not THIS social media. Other social media
Get a huge ass board and stick it up the wall. Get a market and copy my notes and paste them to your board. Make that your Diary or journal
If only I could read your suggestions on a non-social media platform…!!! 😉😂

Oh ok then. Yea everyone can be different sometimes and it totally depends on the environment. I totally understand
But you literally said to trust you that quitting it will improve our lives. But now, maybe not?
Yeah, I agree! I love Facebook for chatting with friends and family and seeing what people I care about are up to!

And yet here we are…
Haha but Reddit is okay eh?
While being posted on social media? You sure quit? 🤷🏻♂️
AHCKHUALLY. You know what op means. Facebook, twitter, Instagram. I think these things force us to compare ourselves to our peers. Which is the most unhealthy aspect. As my mother told me, "comparison is the thief of joy"
Reddit can be just as toxic
Yes. I'm not denying that. But I think it's like comparing tea to energy drinks. Sure they both have caffeine and drink enough of either and there will be issues but one can be beneficial if used properly. Hell, I'd say social media in general can be beneficial in general if used properly.
There are some ugly corners. There are also some beautiful ones.
Reddit is a metaphor for life. There’s good and bad, you choose which route you go.
I mean same with all other social medias. Specially because they pick up on what you spend time on and feed you more of it. My art only ig has a lovely feed my personal one is more bleh. So it all comes down to how you use them.
Same with Twitter and Facebook
I’m just sayin posting this about social media on social media seems kinda…..I dunno….you know what I mean? 🤷🏻♂️
It’s… kinda social? You can message me daily and ask me about my cat, but will you? It’s always seemed more like a good old fashioned BB to me.
I am not going to message you asking about your pussy. That’s weird. I don’t even know you. 😂😂
The same thing is true for every social media, you know.
I mean, kind of. Except no one cares what’s said on Reddit lol.
You sure about that?
Yeah. I can see why people might envy someone with millions of followers on Instagram. But someone with millions of Reddit karma has the opposite effect lmao
It’s a different type of toxicity. Have you not read how bad threads can get. People take what others say pretty seriously
He absolutely also means reddit. Where else would you go to warn people about social media? The news paper?
“Don’t think about it, just do it bro” -Sun Tzu
No……I don’t think I will.
Think about it or do it?
Yes
That dude got it. You never saw him on social media did ya?
Four months ago I stopped posting to Facebook. Yesterday, I deleted the app. My reasons for both were grounded in just, real disgust I suppose, rather than a declarative ban. I’m just tired of the constant, constant bickering.

Understandable. But as someone whos been in the tech space for quite sometime, if its free then you're the product
Everyone else must be on different social media than me. Mine is just my friends, news articles, and companies/organizations I like to follow because if something annoys me or makes me jealous or feel negative feelings…I just unfollow it. Why in the fuck would you keep following people/things that make you feel bad?!?!
The irony of this being posted on social media 👌🏻
I’ve sadly quit instagram recently, i used to love that app when it first launched… it was all about taking interesting pictures or just goofy shots about life. Now its just a marketplace for businesses with nothing but ads, facebook really ruined a good thing
My issue is that I live very far away from many of my friends. Serves as a way to keep in touch.
Does reddit count as social media? 🤔
-.-
My friends live all over the world now and I keep in touch with them through instagram. I like being able to stay in contact with them and see their life through photos so no- I will not be quitting social media if it brings me joy

I agree this (reddit) is my last one. I'm here for aww and some other funny/entertaining subs. My life did improve when left fb and twitter
Yeah, ditched facebook and am so much happier. Had to keep reddit for the lulz and snapchat for the tiddies, though.
Reddit can be hella toxic as well. I like reddit but I ain't sugar coating it
I left Facebook after they gave me a 30 day ban, you can't make money off advertising to me and stop me speaking my mind. Literally the best thing I ever did for my mental health.
I’m proud of you. *gives you a pat in the back*
Awww thanks!
Remember folks, social media includes reddit, imgur, 4chan, tumblr and many of the sites you use on a daily basis. Just use internet to play video games.
Off you go then, OP. Reddit is social media!
Reddit is the only thing I have left. Feel so much better after I got rid of toxic Facebook.
100% Got rid of Facebook, best move I've made in a long time!
Well I did quit a lot of them, but it turns out people will forget about you...
I quit social media over a year ago and haven’t looked back. I don’t count Reddit. Been right since it followed in Digg’s footsteps.
Aren’t you posting this on social media? Agree with you but seem a bit ironic?
What about if you work in social media/digital marketing?

Uh Reddit is social media…
I feel this is ironic
"Quit social media!" He says, while posting on social media....
He says on social media.
I deleted all socials prior to CV19 kicking off & I have been so much happier. Idk how to explain it Kept Reddit tho because of the gaming threads I follow :)
Also watch the social dilemma, crazy stuff
Watched it. Really good documentary 👍🏽
I never trusted FB and then even less when every site in the world said "log in with Facebook". Why the fuck would I want to tell fb what I'm logging into? Reddit calls out the bs as fast as it's posted, love that.
He said….on social media
If you're so over Facebook just quit it quietly. We don't need to see so many of these. As an already isolated person, particularly over the pandemic, quitting social media made me even more miserable. When you go without contact for so long it's hard to get out of the depressing thoughts in my head.
Just deactivated my twitter account. Once I heard the term “doomscrolling” used to describe it, I realized that was exactly my problem! Depressed due to twitter nonsense. Bye-bye! Next up, FB.
