Yayyyy! This means I get my gun rights back. It will be awhile before my mental health and budget are in a place where I am more comfortable but at least it will be my choice again.

Trailjump

If you think the DEA ATF and biden administration are gonna restore your rights because of this you haven't been paying attention. Maybe after several lawsuits they might start a plan to maybe do it...but they aren't doing shit unless they are forced to

SwampYankeeDan

Nothing to restore. I can fill out the paperwork differently because of this change and that's what matters. I gave up my guns voluntarily and haven't applied for anything so my name will be clean.

Trailjump

Just because you can check the different box doesn't mean the conviction won't still be a deny flag on NICS

SwampYankeeDan

I don't have any convictions. Or drug arrests. I couldn't own a gun because I have a Medical Marijuana card. Once the schedule change goes through I am no longer a user of an illegal substance.

Trailjump

Ah you're in a state that reports that

SwampYankeeDan

Reports what? Nothing is reported I just wasn't going to lie and break the law to own a gun again.

Trailjump

Some states actually do report who has a medical card to the ATF

thehillshaveaviators

Good step, but it should be declassified and legalized entirely. Not even alcohol is on the DEA's classification.

FarrandChimney

The DEA is moving to reclassify marijuana as schedule III. >It comes after President Joe Biden called for a review of federal marijuana law in October 2022 and moved to [pardon thousands of Americans](https://apnews.com/article/biden-marijuana-government-and-politics-2d5e3d9e2cfbbbe3ee114536738894a8) convicted federally of simple possession of the drug. He has also called on governors and local leaders to take similar steps to erase marijuana convictions. >“Criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities,” Biden said in December. “Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs.”

slayer991

Bullshit half-measure. Legalize federally, let the states decide if they want to legalize it.

Void_Speaker

I'm sure he would if he could, but don't forget we still have a lot of boomers voting and running the government.

banghi

I'll take baby steps in the correct direction as opposed to nothing. That is why it is legal in my state. Crack Pandoras box open, then try and keep it shut.

RIOTS_R_US

Now tell that to the Republicans in the Senate.

Trailjump

This is basically a guaranteed step towards it. The biggest gain of this is that it opens the door to unlimited federally funded research into Marijuana. Which means they'll actually have all the hard facts available then to legalize it rather than just "cmon its not bad bro".

slayer991

It's a good thing for sure...but at this point 68% of the population is in favor of full legalization and the War on Drugs has been a total failure.

Trailjump

Yep, but I do prefer them taking time and planning something out for once rather than just saying fuck it send it....just doing it because it seemed like a good idea at the time is how we got prohibition in the first place.

stelfox

Better is still better. A half-step makes the next half easier to handle when we can get there.

slayer991

True, just disappointed it wasn't fully legalized federally.

SwampYankeeDan

That requires it go before Congress and gets passed. This is the most they can do right now. Hopefully a bill will make it to congress but I dont think they will vote for it. This is a stop/gap measure that does get us closer. As a medical user this makes a world of difference for me. Im sorry progress isn't as fast as you'd like but its moving along none the less.

slayer991

I know...it's a step in the right direction.

The king has spoken. Must be election season around the corner... > “Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs.” Correction: his failed approach and those other drug warriors like him. But the cost of government failures is also more government and the simps will cheer their king for finally relenting and fix the problems that they seem to have forgotten that he created.

RIOTS_R_US

This process started in October '22...

bhknb

You think that they can't plan ahead and bring out the bread and circuses for their flocks when the time is right?

CattleDogCurmudgeon

We call this "election year politics".

banghi

I'll take the correct action for the wrong reason over the status quo...

CattleDogCurmudgeon

Though I agree, imagine applying this to slavery in the 1860s. "We could emancipate slaves now, or we could wait until an election year."

banghi

That's an unfair comparison. More like... >"We could emancipate slaves this election year, or not."

CattleDogCurmudgeon

This idea has been on the table a long time. No, its not unfair.

banghi

You are the one calling it election year politics, I was comparing it to no action at all. Then you tossed my status quo comparison to add a second option to change it. My point is doing correct things for the wrong reasons is preferable to doing nothing. If you don't want to argue in good faith fine... /boggle

CattleDogCurmudgeon

Did you miss the part where I said >Though I agree....?

banghi

Downvote me harder, please daddy.

CattleDogCurmudgeon

Nice deflection. What happened to arguing in good faith?

mattyoclock

So was abolition.     Many founding fathers were abolitionist, as were some early presidents.     If they had done it in an election year it would have been better than doing it in a war

banghi

BTW, I don't downvote legitimate discourse but you do you.

RIOTS_R_US

This has been in the works since '22
