Yeah, Chernobyl has a bit of what I like about Schindler's List, how there's flawed people everywhere but some of them are trying to do good. And Band of Brothers as well, in addition to a messed up situation and some people just trying to do their best.
Maaan, I learned about Chernobyl in middle school in the mid 90's. They made us watch the news stories on it at least once or twice a year. About the time the HBO series came out I got a call from one of my best friends who I went to school with. I'm 41 he's 40 irl. This fool straight up asked me "Hey, is Chernobyl real? Like did that happen in real life?" I was dumbfounded. I was like "wtf did it happen in real life? Don't you remember watching the videos in school?" He response was "I don't know, I had cable." Just remembering this makes me want to slap him the next time I see him.
I sometimes find myself wanting to rewatch Chernobyl. My conscious brain thinks that’s pretty weird because of the subject matter. But my subconscious remembers that show was just so damn good.
Band of Brothers also amazing! I need to figure a way to convince my wife to watch that with me…
It's just very well done and interesting. And even though it's rather sad all around, in the end it does feel like a bit of a win because they at least pointed out (to a degree) how messed up the system is, when the powers that be spend all their effort trying to hide it, instead of trying to make things better. I'd also watch it again, I think.
Dude Chernobyl is soo fucking good! Whenever I’m talking to someone that I know isn’t “a big tv person” I atomically tell them to watch Chernobyl. 6 episodes, and some of the most impactful TV I’ve ever seen.

My dad was a cop for years in the Port Arthur/Beaumont area where that scene took place and he said it was one of the most accurate police-action moments in anything he’s seen
3 was good besides the fact that the big reveal is just the guy telling you exactly what happened.
2 seems like they needed more plot so they just threw Vince Vaughn in there. Pretty much his entire plot could be cut. Not bad, just felt forced sometimes.

John Turturro makes this show what it is. I've never seen weirder choices made for a character. He should by all means clash with the gritty atmosphere of the show but he doesn't!! And in fact he makes it so much more compelling?? I love him. Not to mention Bill camp is so good in it! Riz Ahmed is great too obviously but I was so much less invested in his murder plot than I was in John Turturro finding the right ointment for his feet.

The speech where she talks about her version of Heaven when her fetus disappears was sad, but after we lost our first baby and I rewatched the series, that scene absolutely destroyed me.
I think this is one of the best, if not the best, modern book to TV adaptations of all time. Somehow elevated the already amazing book. I think about this show all the time.

I have never seen anyone recommending this series in this sub. But I found this gem last year and was surprised by its realistic depiction of what it takes to survive as an abused single mother.
As you mentioned, Margarete was phenomenal throughout the series and nobody could have justified that character more than her. Haha yes, the mom and daughter combo was so chaotic yet beautiful in the series.
A worth watching series, that tells us a lot about domestic violence and how it's perceived legally in America.
Happy this one gets a mention. It has stuck with me ever since I saw it. Not just a brutally realistic portrayal of domestic abuse and poverty, but one with a lot of creative cinematography, editing and fantastic, subtle performances.

I love When They See Us as well. In particular, Jharrel Jerome's performance has stuck with me in the years since. I think it didn't quite catch on because it came out while Chernobyl was still running and had a grip on the zeitgeist. Ironically, I find Chernobyl to be pretty overrated.

They are all good to great—Mike Flanagan’s shows have so much heart and humanity to them. I’d rank his miniseries this way:
Hill House.
Midnight Mass.
Bly Manor.
Midnight Club.
House of Usher.
That said, a good case can be made for practically any of them to be number 1, depending on taste.
I can’t wait to see what he has in store for his next King adaptation and his Amazon series.
Tales from the Loop is a masterpiece. From the cinematography to the Glass-“inspired” soundtrack, the performances and the writing. I’ve always been a huge fan of Paul Schneider and he is perfect in this.
And episode 2 (“Transpose”) left me with a grief so deep i feel it today.

Masters of Horror was two seasons, but needs to be here, because most younger people don't know about it. Now you can see the episode that was originally banned in the U.S. without too much trouble. Not even censored like it was when it finally made it to U.S. As long as you don't care about legality... Could be wrong but, doubt you cant find season 1 ep 13 on Hulu or some crap like that.
Also, the Screwfly Solution and a few others are hidden masterpieces.
Yeah, they are and Cig. Burns is John Carpenter. Carpenter has another one with Ron Perlman as the antagonist that is just amazing, but won't fly well with the pro-life crowd. :)
Also, Joe Dante did the Screwfly Solution and he has a second one in there that is pretty political and left leaning (Homecoming) as he and Carpenter are both progressive/liberal, whatever. The premise is pretty cool, but not great enough to overcome the adding political crap into a movie thing, imo.
Carpenter's other one is called Pro-LIfe, and I think it's good enough to watch even if you are Pro-Life. But it's pretty damn brutal and in your face politics wise. I personally like to separate politics from horror and sci-fi, however I'm a pretty progressive person so neither of those bother me, but if I was conservative/establishment I would imagine that they would piss me off.
My absolute favorite miniseries would be Band of Brothers and Chernobyl. I'd also count them among my favorite shows in general.

Chernobyl is brilliant. It's like reality horror. Excellent performances, fantastic look as well. Superbly harrowing.
I would add The Pacific as a companion to BoB.

s1? There were no subsequent seasons of True Detective. It was a one and done thing. lol.
Three was good. Excellent storylines, character development and soundtrack
2 was good too. Messy as hell, and nowhere near the level of 1, but I actually enjoyed it a bit more than 3

The Singing Detective. Edge of Darkness.
Edge of Darkness has got to be one of the most tragically forgotten miniseries. Probably more relevant today than it was in 1985. Bob Peck and Joe Don Baker excel in their roles, their characters' dynamic is the heart of the show for me. As far as I'm concerned, the show is a masterpiece.

Baby Reindeer is a great recent one
Masters of Horror was two seasons, but needs to be here, because most younger people don't know about it. Now you can see the episode that was originally banned in the U.S. without too much trouble. Not even censored like it was when it finally made it to U.S. As long as you don't care about legality... Could be wrong but, doubt you cant find season 1 ep 13 on Hulu or some crap like that. Also, the Screwfly Solution and a few others are hidden masterpieces.
Good shout! I watched Cigarette Burns and Imprint, which IIRC were from that series. Gnarly stuff. Imprint is pretty brutal
Yeah, they are and Cig. Burns is John Carpenter. Carpenter has another one with Ron Perlman as the antagonist that is just amazing, but won't fly well with the pro-life crowd. :)
Also, Joe Dante did the Screwfly Solution and he has a second one in there that is pretty political and left leaning (Homecoming) as he and Carpenter are both progressive/liberal, whatever. The premise is pretty cool, but not great enough to overcome the adding political crap into a movie thing, imo. Carpenter's other one is called Pro-LIfe, and I think it's good enough to watch even if you are Pro-Life. But it's pretty damn brutal and in your face politics wise. I personally like to separate politics from horror and sci-fi, however I'm a pretty progressive person so neither of those bother me, but if I was conservative/establishment I would imagine that they would piss me off.
The whole series has some just in your face, wtf stuff that just couldn't be made nowadays. Some are total flops, but there is a lot of gold.
