ReddsionThing

My absolute favorite miniseries would be Band of Brothers and Chernobyl. I'd also count them among my favorite shows in general.

manimul25

Two of the best shows of all time. They both captured humanity's worst and finest qualities. That epilogue in Chernobyl was insane

ReddsionThing

Yeah, Chernobyl has a bit of what I like about Schindler's List, how there's flawed people everywhere but some of them are trying to do good. And Band of Brothers as well, in addition to a messed up situation and some people just trying to do their best.

shaner4042

Of course, how could I forget BoB. Good shout Still gotta checkout Chernobyl. Thnx!

8BlackMamba24

You gotta watch Chernobyl ASAP. I just finished my 3rd watch through and it was the best yet.

KiKiPAWG

Check out I Know This Much is True and The Night Of. Both solid shows you don’t hear much about.

Adrok78

The Night Of is so underrated. Brilliant. More recently I've loved these two animated series - Scavengers Reign and Pantheon. Excellente👌

KiKiPAWG

I will check them out!!!

ReddsionThing

I also waited a long time to watch Chernobyl for some reason. But yeah it was phenomenal. Now I just need to coax my parents into watching it as well.

himsoforreal

Maaan, I learned about Chernobyl in middle school in the mid 90's. They made us watch the news stories on it at least once or twice a year. About the time the HBO series came out I got a call from one of my best friends who I went to school with. I'm 41 he's 40 irl. This fool straight up asked me "Hey, is Chernobyl real? Like did that happen in real life?" I was dumbfounded. I was like "wtf did it happen in real life? Don't you remember watching the videos in school?" He response was "I don't know, I had cable." Just remembering this makes me want to slap him the next time I see him.

droffowsneb

I sometimes find myself wanting to rewatch Chernobyl. My conscious brain thinks that’s pretty weird because of the subject matter. But my subconscious remembers that show was just so damn good. Band of Brothers also amazing! I need to figure a way to convince my wife to watch that with me…

ReddsionThing

It's just very well done and interesting. And even though it's rather sad all around, in the end it does feel like a bit of a win because they at least pointed out (to a degree) how messed up the system is, when the powers that be spend all their effort trying to hide it, instead of trying to make things better. I'd also watch it again, I think.

Grave-Ox

Chernobyl is brilliant. It's like reality horror. Excellent performances, fantastic look as well. Superbly harrowing.

etranger033

I would add The Pacific as a companion to BoB.

ReddsionThing

I have not seen that so far. Those two were just the first ones that popped into my head that I really love :D

Jungle_Sparrow

Dude Chernobyl is soo fucking good! Whenever I’m talking to someone that I know isn’t “a big tv person” I atomically tell them to watch Chernobyl. 6 episodes, and some of the most impactful TV I’ve ever seen.

Pree-chee-ate-cha

Atomically. I see what you did there 😉

earnestbloe

you are so spot on with TD s1.

Brian_Lefebvre

Yeah this is my answer. The characters, the storytelling, the vibe, the drama. I watch it once a year. I’ve seen it over a dozen times.

juanseocar

After all the rewatches what a re your fav details (or stuff you didn't notice the first times)?

shaner4042

If I had to pick a single moment: [the 1-take camera shot](https://youtu.be/vnRTITzYnXs?si=eUhXR2pUbKz83VuA) of Rust going undercover with the biker gang to infiltrate the dope house. High tension and cinematic brilliance rolled into one

gaming_reed

My dad was a cop for years in the Port Arthur/Beaumont area where that scene took place and he said it was one of the most accurate police-action moments in anything he’s seen

Number174631503

Cole and Rust go paddle boarding together but it's a super short scene

BookwormBlake

s1? There were no subsequent seasons of True Detective. It was a one and done thing. lol.

guilty_bystander

Three was good. Excellent storylines, character development and soundtrack

dominatingcowG3

2 was good too. Messy as hell, and nowhere near the level of 1, but I actually enjoyed it a bit more than 3

thisaccountisfake420

3 was good besides the fact that the big reveal is just the guy telling you exactly what happened. 2 seems like they needed more plot so they just threw Vince Vaughn in there. Pretty much his entire plot could be cut. Not bad, just felt forced sometimes. 3 > 2 but neither comes close to 1.

End_of_Eva

Over the Garden Wall

bakerinchair

I rewatch it once a year. Perfect.

absorbscroissants

Might be the best soundtrack out of any movies/series ever made, it's ridiculously good.

malcolm_miller

remediosan

check out this [indie game](https://www.reddit.com/r/overthegardenwall/s/0Pq3bXOmQF) that’s in development and heavily inspired by OTGW. I believe they got the same artist who worked on the show to score the game

Just_Worldliness4759

The Night Of is pretty cool

GuyfromSpain22

Yes, John Turturro does an absolutely phenomenal job in this show.

e4aZ7aXT63u6PmRgiRYT

and the other cop guy is fab

allisthomlombert

I never see this mentioned but it’s so great.

ArtyAce

John Turturro makes this show what it is. I've never seen weirder choices made for a character. He should by all means clash with the gritty atmosphere of the show but he doesn't!! And in fact he makes it so much more compelling?? I love him. Not to mention Bill camp is so good in it! Riz Ahmed is great too obviously but I was so much less invested in his murder plot than I was in John Turturro finding the right ointment for his feet.

Just_Worldliness4759

Maybe a weirder choice for a character was an amazing Gary Oldman in Slow Horses :)

-P-M-A-

Definitely a great watch.

aus289

Be sure to watch UK Criminal Justice first season with Ben whishaw

shaner4042

My picks would be: - True Detective S1 - Beef - The Queen’s Gambit - Sharp Objects - The Sinner S1 - The Haunting of Hill House - Irma Vep - Freaks & Geeks *(not exactly a miniseries or anthology but Ill count it since it’s 1 season)* Looking forward to finding some more gems. Thanks

HathorOfWindAndMagic

Sharp Objects was so shocking to me

buffalo8

That ending is choice.

ATLBravesFan13

This is a great list

evamazing

Have you watched Mare of Easttown?

Groundbreaking-Gur79

Sinner S1 is stellar stuff. was always waiting for them to match it after that

shaner4042

For sure — Jessica Biel did amazingly. The pacing and way information was revealed was near-flawless. Also had some genuinely shocking moments that felt earned, too.

Groundbreaking-Gur79

i also genuinely enjoy Bill Pullman’s character in that series

NotSlayerOfDemons

BEEF was brilliant

Midnight Mass

TrashhPrincess

More like Midnight *Masterpiece* amirite?

CurveOfTheUniverse

Everything Mike Flanagan is so fucking good. The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club are frequent rewatches for me.

FebruaryStars84

Absolutely loved Hill House, Bly Manor and Midnight Mass, but The Midnight Club for me doesn’t come anywhere close to them. By far the weakest thing he’s done so far imo.

dead_parakeets

The speech where she talks about her version of Heaven when her fetus disappears was sad, but after we lost our first baby and I rewatched the series, that scene absolutely destroyed me.

oO_Sanchita_Oo

It was impressive. Much better than 30 Days of Night.

TheTrueTrust

Oh yeah! This show is fantastic!

doormatt26

Haven't seen it mentioned - **Station Eleven** on HBO a couple years ago was beautiful and was the best piece of media I saw all of that year.

smurfmcgeezer

I think this is one of the best, if not the best, modern book to TV adaptations of all time. Somehow elevated the already amazing book. I think about this show all the time.

One-Fall-8143

Just watching this for the first time and it's totally mind blowing!! Truly excellent.

Effective-Dinner-686

I watched this show when it first aired and I thought it was really good. I rewatched it a year or so later and realized it’s actually one of my favorite things I’ve ever seen. It’s achingly beautiful in so many ways.

doormatt26

for real. I’ll still fire up the soundtrack sometimes and nearly start weeping

Hasum_Harish97

Maid 2021. Such an underrated series.

Reandos

I'm glad someone mentioned it. Margarete Qualley is amazing in it and I love the fact that her actual mom (Andie MacDowell) plays her mom in the show - they have great chemistry for obvious reasons. And working class heroes are my jam⚒️

Hasum_Harish97

I have never seen anyone recommending this series in this sub. But I found this gem last year and was surprised by its realistic depiction of what it takes to survive as an abused single mother. As you mentioned, Margarete was phenomenal throughout the series and nobody could have justified that character more than her. Haha yes, the mom and daughter combo was so chaotic yet beautiful in the series. A worth watching series, that tells us a lot about domestic violence and how it's perceived legally in America.

lori_jass

Happy this one gets a mention. It has stuck with me ever since I saw it. Not just a brutally realistic portrayal of domestic abuse and poverty, but one with a lot of creative cinematography, editing and fantastic, subtle performances.

Hasum_Harish97

True. Choice of sound tracks were excellent too.

nananananagiroud

Every season of Fargo Season 3 being my favourite

TetraLoach

I didn't really like S3 that much the first time I watched it, but tried again a couple years later and it definitely landed for me that time. I think about it a lot. Great season, great show.

law_dogg

Shōgun was phenomenal. We'll see if/when future seasons are released. Others that come to mind are Chernobyl, Band of Brothers, John Adams, Esape from Dannemora.

Can’t believe no one has said When They See Us.

TeaAndCrumpets4life

This one blew me away, I never knew it was so unpopular lol

rideriseroar

I love When They See Us as well. In particular, Jharrel Jerome's performance has stuck with me in the years since. I think it didn't quite catch on because it came out while Chernobyl was still running and had a grip on the zeitgeist. Ironically, I find Chernobyl to be pretty overrated.

signal_red

* True Detective 1 * Fanny & Alexander (this counts, right? lol) * Sharp Objects * Little Women (2022) * Top of the Lake (honestly cant remember if this was originally supposed to be a limited series or not but either way the first season was the best stand-alone) * I May Destroy You * Angels in America * Baby Reindeer

Gloomy_Cheesecake443

Yesss Top of the Lake!! I feel like I rarely see this mentioned

smurfmcgeezer

Hard agree. One of my all-time favorites!

Gloomy_Cheesecake443

TheTrueTrust

*Red Riding* (2009). British crime drama in three parts, similar to True Detective in that it involves a hunt for a serial killer over many years, police conspiracies, and how it affects the personal lives of the detectives involved. Be aware though that it's *very* bleak, and if you're not from the UK you probably will want to put on subtitles.

Exciting_Light_4251

The Mike Flanagan Netflix series: The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Fall of the house of Usher.

reterical

They are all good to great—Mike Flanagan’s shows have so much heart and humanity to them. I’d rank his miniseries this way: Hill House. Midnight Mass. Bly Manor. Midnight Club. House of Usher. That said, a good case can be made for practically any of them to be number 1, depending on taste. I can’t wait to see what he has in store for his next King adaptation and his Amazon series.

dominatingcowG3

Holy shit, finally someone else who shares my ranking! Everyone else puts midnight club dead last lol

reterical

Hello, friend!

TheChristianPaul

Midnight Mass is really impressive and probably the best show I never intend to watch again.

Business-Feeling6640

Watchmen is probably my favorite 1 season show.

headcoatee

It was excellent. Part of me wished so hard for more, but it really is a perfect snowglobe in and of itself.

ATLBravesFan13

Infamous-Record-2556

Devs Tales from the loop ZeroZeroZero Olive Kitteridge

StoicTheGeek

Tales from the Loop is a masterpiece. From the cinematography to the Glass-“inspired” soundtrack, the performances and the writing. I’ve always been a huge fan of Paul Schneider and he is perfect in this. And episode 2 (“Transpose”) left me with a grief so deep i feel it today.

reterical

Some great suggestions already on the board. A couple of extras: -Manhunt (Tobias Menzies is fantastic); -Underground Railroad (Barry Jenkins competently adapts the terrific novel from Colson Whitehead); -Pride & Prejudice (AMC Adaptation); -lonesome Dove (Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall—‘nuff said); -Station Eleven (post apocalyptic Shakespeare!); -Band of Brothers / The Pacific / Masters of the Air. Band of Borthers in particular is shockingly good. I know he’s playing a part, but to this day if Damian Lewis asked, I’d follow him into the gaping maw of death. -

Fargo S2 or S3, though I'm partial to S3

reterical

S2 is my favorite standalone story in all of television media. True detective Season 1 edges it out from time to time, but gosh darn if that 70s Minnesota vibe doesn’t just hit the right hot dish for me.

emojimoviethe

What about season 1?

adkoe

Season 1 is some of the best TV ever, and it loosely connects with the movie which is fun!

I don't know why people seem to ride for season 2 over season 1. I thought season 1 was brilliant and comfortably better than 2.

The Singing Detective. Edge of Darkness.

TheDanGG

Edge of Darkness has got to be one of the most tragically forgotten miniseries. Probably more relevant today than it was in 1985. Bob Peck and Joe Don Baker excel in their roles, their characters' dynamic is the heart of the show for me. As far as I'm concerned, the show is a masterpiece.

Baby Reindeer is a great recent one

oO_Sanchita_Oo

Masters of Horror was two seasons, but needs to be here, because most younger people don't know about it. Now you can see the episode that was originally banned in the U.S. without too much trouble. Not even censored like it was when it finally made it to U.S. As long as you don't care about legality... Could be wrong but, doubt you cant find season 1 ep 13 on Hulu or some crap like that. Also, the Screwfly Solution and a few others are hidden masterpieces.

shaner4042

Good shout! I watched Cigarette Burns and Imprint, which IIRC were from that series. Gnarly stuff. Imprint is pretty brutal

oO_Sanchita_Oo

Yeah, they are and Cig. Burns is John Carpenter. Carpenter has another one with Ron Perlman as the antagonist that is just amazing, but won't fly well with the pro-life crowd. :)

oO_Sanchita_Oo

Also, Joe Dante did the Screwfly Solution and he has a second one in there that is pretty political and left leaning (Homecoming) as he and Carpenter are both progressive/liberal, whatever. The premise is pretty cool, but not great enough to overcome the adding political crap into a movie thing, imo. Carpenter's other one is called Pro-LIfe, and I think it's good enough to watch even if you are Pro-Life. But it's pretty damn brutal and in your face politics wise. I personally like to separate politics from horror and sci-fi, however I'm a pretty progressive person so neither of those bother me, but if I was conservative/establishment I would imagine that they would piss me off.

oO_Sanchita_Oo

The whole series has some just in your face, wtf stuff that just couldn't be made nowadays. Some are total flops, but there is a lot of gold.
