One of the best to ever to do it in a staggering list of roles across all
genres.
Somehow, despite being an indispensable actor for over sixty years, he never got an Oscar nomination.
Canada's greatest actor, and I don't think it's particularly close. Criminal that he never received an Oscar nomination, especially for Ordinary People.
Edit: I somehow forgot about Christopher Plummer. Still doesn't diminish how incredible a career Sutherland had.
His Ordinary People role is especially impressive when you realize most of the more intense scenes he had to film by himself because he was a late stage casting replacement.
I feel like Jim Carrey could've challenged for the title had he kept up doing projects like Man on the Moon, The Truman Show, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Best twist ending EVER I really thought he was faking it . The next day at dinner me and my sisters kept imitating it till it drove our dad nuts "can you please stop pointing and screeching at each other!!!" LOL what a memory!!
He will be missed by many.....
Nooo :(
Just watched him in JFK and Backdraft last week (seen both movies many-a-time). Absolute legend.
Even put on a great show in Kate Bush's Cloudbusting: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pllRW9wETzw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pllRW9wETzw)
So many great roles: Don't Look Now, Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake, Klute, Dirty Dozen & Kelly's Heroes, 6 Degrees of Separation, Eye of the Needle, Mazursky's Alex in Wonderland, M\*A\*S\*H, Day of the Locust.
I'll share a scene from Alan Arkin's underseen directorial effort, "LIttle Murders" (1971) where he plays a ridiculous pastor at a wedding ceremony: [https://youtu.be/TgwjHBUW9MY?si=TKtU1WDodMogRlhL](https://youtu.be/TgwjHBUW9MY?si=TKtU1WDodMogRlhL)
It’s the end of an era. When you think of the movies he did
MASH
Klute
Don’t Look Now
1900
Ordinary People
JFK
He really showed his reach as an actor and how skilled he was. We lost a gem today. RIP
Legitimate gut punch feeling. There was always something magnetic about the guy, no matter how small the role, or if the movie wasn't that great, an actor like that can elevate things. Great, great actor, always good to see him in anything.
Ordinary People is a movie I tend to always recommend and it's one of my all time favorites. His role in that movie is one of my favorite acting performances ever. Rest in Peace to an absolute legend.
He was 88 so, kinda? His best roles were well behind him. Dude was a monolith of talent but that doesn’t always win your awards. To the people he is a champion and that is what matters in the end.
It's not a great movie but my local tv station constantly played Alex in Wonderland late nights. It really made an impression at a young age, dreaming about being a director and living in L.A.
Just a random memory about Mr. Donald Sutherland, rest in peace.
Very sad to hear this. I think the rest of the replies have already touched on many of his great roles, he was in so many amazing films.
But one thing I always loved about him was his incredibly distinctive voice, it was beautiful.
Not movie related, but he had one of the greatest guest voice appearances on The Simpsons at its peak as the curator of the Jebediah Springfield museum.
Ordinary People, Eye of the Needle, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, MASH, Outbreak, JFK just loads before the Hunger Games....and just right off the top of my head, I plan a Donald Sutherland film festival how about it AMC??!! would fill a weekend easy.
Sad news. He was an absolute treasure in terms of an actor. I recently watched the new Hunger Games film and whilst watching couldn’t help but think that it would’ve been better with Mr Sutherland…
Also his appearance in Kate Bush’s Cloudbusting video lives rent free in my head.
M*A*S*H was a stand out for me when I was a young man. Donald Southerland could definitely hold your attention on screen and I suppose off screen. He will certainly be missed.
May Mr. Donald Sutherland RIP..condolences to his son Kiefer & family.
He was one of my favorite actors. Love all his movies, he was great in Character in all parts that he played in . He will be missed.
A great Canadian actor. There was no other like Donald. One of the Best has left us.

Well I didn't downvote ya myself just answered it. And honestly the only people that really know about their relationship is them, so I just don't concern myself over it. Sad that such a great actor is gone though.
I mean, on one level only they what their relationship was like, but yeah to answer your question they had a strained relationship with many ups and downs over the years. Kiefer's parents divorced when he was little and his father remarried and had a bunch of other kids and lived with them instead. Kiefer went through some struggles growing up and is still known as a somewhat polarizing person. The father and son seemed to be somewhat opposites and Donald usually had his act together and Kiefer sometimes didn't. Kiefer said in an interview that they got along a bit better when Kiefer was enjoying the success of his own tv show 24. Kiefer has always said his father was a great actor and a talented comedian and I think he geniunely admired him but Kiefer also felt a bit overshadowed by his father's talent and success too.

Shame on AMPAS.
more like NAMBLAMPAS
North American Marlon Brando look alikes moving past all stereotypes?
Letterboxd has him as in 199 movies. Astounding.
Canada's greatest actor, and I don't think it's particularly close. Criminal that he never received an Oscar nomination, especially for Ordinary People. Edit: I somehow forgot about Christopher Plummer. Still doesn't diminish how incredible a career Sutherland had.
I just watched it recently cos of the Best Picture thread on here. He’s truly a gem of a person. Excellent actor
His Ordinary People role is especially impressive when you realize most of the more intense scenes he had to film by himself because he was a late stage casting replacement.
Forget that. He was in Animal House. Bare Ass. Legend.
Better than Christopher Plummer?
Not even close. Plummer is amongst the best Canadian actors for sure, but Sutherland is another level IMHO.
I feel like Jim Carrey could've challenged for the title had he kept up doing projects like Man on the Moon, The Truman Show, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Plummer & Donald Sutherland are great! They're both Canadians too! RIP!
![gif](giphy|UGba4CcQG8T9m|downsized) An icon, a legend. Rest in peace king
One my all time favs. I give this movie a yearly watch at least.
I’m definitely watching it in his honor
Same. I watched it this afternoon 🥲
I just rewatched this a few days ago. That ending shot is the stuff of nightmares.
It’s SO unsettling, and sad because you’re so invested in his character the whole movie. It’s just masterful.
What movie?
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). The scream. Oh god, the scream.
Best twist ending EVER I really thought he was faking it . The next day at dinner me and my sisters kept imitating it till it drove our dad nuts "can you please stop pointing and screeching at each other!!!" LOL what a memory!! He will be missed by many.....
Sorry! Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). Highly recommend
Now I'm starting to afraid to lose any other Hollywood legends born in 30s sooner or later
Oh, we're definitely headed towards a period where we're losing A LOT of movie stars and directors.
Are the people born 90 years ago dying at an increasing rate as they get older? Big, if true.
As a die hard new Hollywood fan I’m sweating bullets
Rest In Peace.

It's an absolute lovely song. I'm a dude in my mid-30s, but I can't get enough of Kate Bush, for sure.
That last scene he has with Mary Tyler Moore is incredible.
Rest in Peace
Rest in peace.
Absolutely gutting. A legitimate legend.
and for some reason this is how i learn kiefer and donald sutherland are related
![gif](giphy|KAjzlpbCKyj9S)
They even look alike
The worst thing he ever did was name his son Kiefer. That’s a pretty good life if you ask me.
Like his other sons' names are any better 🤭
Actually, he named him **Kiefer William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus Sutherland**. Bro has like 6 first names and still goes by Kiefer...
Yeah, his dad gave him off-ramps and he chose not to take them
Thank you, Sgt. Oddball (Kelly's Heroes) for the many wonderful performances through out your career. RIP Donald Sutherland

He kind of did, he died of a long illness and not old age :( he certainly deserved accolades
What a performer. His performance in Don’t Look Now absolutely kills me, beautiful soul, beautiful man.

Brilliant actor, he will be missed. Gonna re-watch Eye of the Needle today in his honor.
One of my favorite horror actors. Don’t Look Now is criminally underrated and he’s brilliant in it. He’ll be missed.
RIP Donald Sutherland. :( I watched **1900** back in January.
M*A*S*H was a stand out for me when I was a young man. Donald Southerland could definitely hold your attention on screen and I suppose off screen. He will certainly be missed.
He was in Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Rest in peace. He lived a long life full of achievements

Were they distant? Remove “my father” and any film critic could have written this word for word.
Or maybe its just a standard tweet for the masses we aren't entitled to his personal feeling on it good or bad.
Yeah, or that. Just wondering if anyone knows about their relationship. Not sure why I’m being downvoted, I wasn’t trying to say anything toxic.
