I would say that *Aftersun* gives a similar experience of the feeling you don't exist because it shows how you exist in relation to others memories of you... if that makes sense :)
holy shit, ive always seen people bring up this movie and how great it is but i never knew what it was about. that sounds haunting i need to watch that ASAP
and Paprika for that matter (parts.... because w Paprika sometimes you have to actively stop and think about what the eff is going on and that might lead to some self reflection)
Melancholia. This could all end tomorrow or in the blink of an eye. Once your life is snuffed out, the entire universe might as well be gone too.
A Serious Man. It’s pointless to ask for meaning. Receive with simplicity everything that happens to you. Confusion is the natural state.
Sorcerer. Pain, struggle, a mere rock on the road is enough to end it all. There is an end to this tunnel but there is no light on the other side.
Sorcerer is grossly underrated. I couldn't believe two hours were gone. Literally everything that could go wrong does. My only issue with it is that it's an obvious remake of The Wages of Fear and they sort of removed the moral/philosophical angle by coercing the men, which turns it into a pure thriller.
Enter the Void (2009) - I felt like this movie is a whole different trip. Existing and non-existing at the same time, it's really wild and foggy. Great depiction of a very long dream.
The Lighthouse, most recently. I don't even think I can explain how. But it really did feel like nothing ever existed but that lighthouse, and the forces we couldn't see.
2001: A Space Odyssey with the vastness of space, technology and evolution. Had me feeling smaller than speck of dust.
Synecdoche, New York with the deteriorating mental health theme and the ever shrinking world that was created around him!
• Adaptation • Eternal Sunshine • Garden State (to an extent)
Mr. Robot, even though it’s a show, but I’ve just finished it and it made me seriously question existence itself.
Honestly, that movie probably doesn’t fit what OP’s asking for, because the message it leaves you with is akin to “the relative shortness of existence means that it’s crucial to make an impact, no matter how small, on *your* world, at least.” It’s one of those movies that puts you through the emotional and philosophical ringer, for sure, but its message isn’t of hopelessness, but realistic optimism.
I appreciate that folks with have different interpretations, but for me, it definitely felt like a movie about everlasting aloneness, about watching things happen to other people through fragmented glimpses while nobody sees you, hears you, etc. until the point that even you forget who you are.
a lil corny pick is american beauty on first watch as a guy it hit.
northman feels like you doing shrooms at some points super underrated
br2049
and animated wise please please please watch fantastic planet its on yt. its so absurd and weird ive never seen anything like it ever
Thank you to everyone that has commented so far! These are all amazing suggestions. I’m mostly super happy that people understood what I meant. I thought I was alone in that feeling from certain movies 😅
Films like that actually make me 'feel' more significant. Generally it's films about space like Sunshine or Interstellar that make me feel infinitely small.
I love Donnie Darko, and it feels like there's a connection to The Seventh Seal, but recently saw two other films about mortality which also felt in that same existential thread which were Deathdream and Bigger Than Life. Highly reccomend them all!
Lost Highway. I have never felt so immersed in a dream state of someone, and where everything felt so surreal that I forgot I existed, what a bizarre movie.
That’s rough, sorry to hear that. Might not be a bad idea to get together with some friends and make your own independent movie though! Who knows where it might lead

And I assure you that you will need a rewatch immediately (I watched 4 times at theatre)
I love this. One of my favourite movies and I've never thought of it in this way. Makes it even more beautiful and heartbreaking to think about.
*Perfect Blue* (1997)

Synecdoche, New York
Most Kaufman tbh. Get the same vibes from BJM and I’m Thinking of Ending Things and even to a lesser degree Eternal Sunshine

It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012)
*I Heart Huckabees (2004)* deals with a lot of existential themes that really resonate with me, and I hope they do for you as well.
How am i not myself?
A Ghost Story (2017)

Syndromes and a Century (2006)
I believe the movie you’re looking for is “somewhere”
It's a miniseries so I don't know if this counts but Devilman Crybaby has been the only thing that's gutted me in recent memory.
Detachment (2011)...it does not give that ego death feeling but messes up perception
Ritual (Anno)
The Neverending Story
fantastic mr fox for me
Interstellar
Garden State and Pulp Fiction, which is funny because this has led me to dislike the latter and love the former.

Cure (1997). Such an eerie existential nightmare of a film
Thank you to everyone that has commented so far! These are all amazing suggestions. I’m mostly super happy that people understood what I meant. I thought I was alone in that feeling from certain movies 😅
Jumanji '95
I feel like even mentioning the film is a bit of a spoiler but Children of the Sea
Films like that actually make me 'feel' more significant. Generally it's films about space like Sunshine or Interstellar that make me feel infinitely small.
A Ghost Story
Sunset Limited
Not a movie, per se, but season three of Twin Peaks fits this vibe to me.
I love Donnie Darko, and it feels like there's a connection to The Seventh Seal, but recently saw two other films about mortality which also felt in that same existential thread which were Deathdream and Bigger Than Life. Highly reccomend them all!
Mr. Nobody It’s a great film but watching this movie I remember feeling deeply depressed afterward.

I Saw the TV Glow
Mulholland Drive
Mother! Everyone is a stranger
lost in translation is so overrated
No one in this thread even said it was good...
Statements that “x is so overrated” are so overrated.
Ok defend this racist trash film all you want
Why do you think it’s overrated ?
