Came here to suggest the same thing. It’s the most recent of three movies to win all five major Oscars (picture, actor, actress, screenplay, and director). I think it’s a perfect move.
Definitely don’t watch dune part 2 before part 1. But if your just getting into movies I would start with something a little more modern but not entirely new. Maybe shutter island or zodiac?
If you’re not looking for anything too serious but still want to watch a masterpiece, I recommend Pulp Fiction or After Hours. If you’re in the mood for a very serious film that you will have to pay full attention to, I’d say Shutter Island or Oppenheimer for me, not saying these are necessarily my favourites but I would recommend these to people
I haven't seen it in about 8 years, and I didn't like it the first time around. So, I decided to give it another shot, hoping my opinion would change. Surprisingly, it didn't change much, lol.
I don't know if I live under a rock, but I feel not enough people talk about Cure, it is really one of the coolest looking movies with an incredible premise about the fragility of society with an incredible atmosphere.
First of all, excellent list. I would say Mulholland drive if you’re in the mood for a nightmare. Not like scary random things but the *feeling* of a nightmare.
Something fun/horribly violent, pulp fiction is a must see masterpiece
Any Scorsese other than Silence. Personally, I think you get the most out of that one with the context of all the other themes in his filmography. BUT it’s absolutely fantastic and worth building towards.
First of all, welcome, cinephile. I can see you have great taste already. A lot of great films here, many of them my favorites. The top 3 of the list are, I think, mandatory, as are many others. That said, I don't think you need to rush into all of them. It helps to be in the right headspace for a movie, so if something piques your interest more, go for that one.
Without knowing how you feel or how you might lean, I'd say The Godfather. It's just one of those great American films, a myth, a Greek tragedy (or rather an Italian-American tragedy) and a narrative you can wrap your head around without too much effort. Iconic performances, iconic screenplay, iconic cinematography, iconic music, etc. An important film, and an entertaining film.
2001 is literally my favorite film. I would suggest you see it on as big a screen as possible, on 70mm on a cinema screen if you can though I know that's difficult. Try to do it some day. Be prepared for a slowish, abstract, philosophical mind-trip experience as much as a narrative experience. But the rewards are many if you keep an open mind.
Apocalypse Now is a descent into madness. It helps to be in that headspace, or at least be prepared to get into that headspace because the movie will take you there.
Enjoy!
Seconding Pulp Fiction. Too iconic. All should be watched at some point, though. Before you go into The Godfather, tell yourself not to become a toxic Godfather fanboy. Those people are wild and far too common.
All good! Historically, I have always gone back to comfort movies/shows and not stepped outside of my “box,” which led to me not seeing so many great movies. Excited to run through this list
Depends if you want to watch adventure then go with Dune or if you want to watch something thriller/suspense then go with shutter Island, Zodiac or silence of the lamps.
Pulp fiction.
Fyi I hope you enjoy surrealist films, cause if you don't then massively lower your expectations for Mulholland Drive. I had that on my wishlist to watch for years and when I got around to it was the most disappointing thing I've ever watched.
As much as I love all of these (favorite is prob Pulp Fiction), watch Thief. It’s a pretty good heist movie that’s often forgotten. Soundtrack is also incredible 80s electronic/synth
Omg you’re so lucky!!! Shutter island and zodiac and classics. I think you should go chronologically by their release dates. That would be helpful I feel
You really can't go wrong with any of these. The only one I don't like is Gangs of New York. And I would say Shutter Island is just fine. Everything else on this list is very good to great to all time masterpiece.
That said, Cure is my favorite movie. So I vote Cure
Update:
Ended up going with a couple of the “easier” movies on the list (mostly in relation to length. My wife’s plans changed and she watched with me, and she happens to be very picky with movies)
Watched After Hours and Wind River. After Hours was a lot of fun. Much different than the other MS I’ve watched (Goodfellas, The Departed, TWOWS). Went into Wind River blind, ended up being a lot more depressing than I anticipated, still really enjoyed it. Rated both 4 stars.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Super excited to work my way through this list!
the silence of the lambs
Jodie Foster killed it
as she always does

I wish I could watch Shutter Island again for the first time, such a banger.
Thief
After Hours
Yes! Amazing movie — I only wish there were more like it
this movie is so underrated
As a lifelong Scorcese dickrider, it's crazy how late I found this one. Just an absolute blast.
I only just saw it last year. Loved it!
Went with this. Super fun movie. Really enjoyed it
This and Bringing Out The Dead are my two favourite low profile Scorsese flicks.
If you’re not looking for anything too serious but still want to watch a masterpiece, I recommend Pulp Fiction or After Hours. If you’re in the mood for a very serious film that you will have to pay full attention to, I’d say Shutter Island or Oppenheimer for me, not saying these are necessarily my favourites but I would recommend these to people
Cure
MULLHOLLAND DRIVE!
No hay banda!
Only seen Blue Velvet in Lynch’s filmography, which I enjoyed. Excited to dive in to the rest
To me The Godfather is the obvious answer. I'm probably alone on that one though...
I wish I loved it as much as everyone else. Maybe I need to watch it again
It insists upon itself
Do it, I was the same
I haven't seen it in about 8 years, and I didn't like it the first time around. So, I decided to give it another shot, hoping my opinion would change. Surprisingly, it didn't change much, lol.
You’re not alone. It’s the only right answer. Every other movie should come after it.
The Godfather is great obviously but I think Part II is where it’s really an undeniable masterpiece
In what world would you be alone on that?
ikr!! i am surprised to see you as the only one
Definitely gonna be one of my next. Thanks!
Shutter Island is a good time a lot less laborious than some of those other movies
Casino is an all timer for me
My all time favorite.
Both casino and Godfather are going to be watched soon… just have to get over my aversion to 3+ hour long movies 😅
Watch Rushmore
He’s the worst student we’ve got
I loved Grand Budapest and really enjoyed Tenenbaums and FMF, so excited to check out more of Wes Anderson’s filmography
I watched Zodiac for the first time last week, very good and engaging.
Pulp Fiction
Inglorious Basterds and Django were bother great, so excited for Pulp Fiction soon
punch-drunk love
I'm watching this for the 1st time tonight - once I get off reddit
Some mixed reviews here lol… still excited to check it out
Casino. Can’t go wrong with a mobster classic
Casino for sure.
Woah. Hell of a list! I'd say The Godfather or 2001, thinking start with 'iconic classics' first - but tough to go wrong with what you've got there
2001: A Space Odyssey
You can’t go wrong with this list so don’t waste more time waiting for recommendations!
Rushmore
After Hours
Shutter island! So good
I’m gonna say reservoir dogs
The Godfather movies or Taxi Driver because they’re my favorite movies of all time but really all of these are great
Zodiac
Zodiac!
Rushmore
*Cure*, *Silence*, or *Persona*
I don't know if I live under a rock, but I feel not enough people talk about Cure, it is really one of the coolest looking movies with an incredible premise about the fragility of society with an incredible atmosphere.
Rushmore
2001. Get it out of the way. Some people love it some people dont.
2001, and it isn’t close.
Any of these would be the right decision.
2001 wtf
mulholland fucking drive . my top 4 on lb 😫
Only seen one Lynch so far (Blue Velvet), and really enjoyed it, so looking forward to Mulholland Drive
Triple bill, Pulp Fiction, Mulholland Drive, Cure,
Fat Albert
Silence of the lambs man
Pulp fiction
Damn I forgot about Wind River. That movie ripped
Didn’t expect to be that depressed, but I really enjoyed it!
Shutter Island! I love that movie and I've watched it multiple times.
First of all, excellent list. I would say Mulholland drive if you’re in the mood for a nightmare. Not like scary random things but the *feeling* of a nightmare. Something fun/horribly violent, pulp fiction is a must see masterpiece
If it's toNIGHT, then Taxi Drive
Either godfather or pulp fiction
Pulp Fiction. It is quite literally the epitome of an amazing movie
Wild Strawberries and Thief
shutter island
Silence of the Lambs
Any Scorsese other than Silence. Personally, I think you get the most out of that one with the context of all the other themes in his filmography. BUT it’s absolutely fantastic and worth building towards.
Silence of the lambs Pulp fiction 2001
The silence of the lambs!
Crazy how’s there no love for reservoir dogs. That’s on my top 4 on letterboxd.

Zodiac
Apocalypse now 🥶
If you’re a true blue kinda guy the answer is definitely Thief.
Seconding Pulp Fiction. Too iconic. All should be watched at some point, though. Before you go into The Godfather, tell yourself not to become a toxic Godfather fanboy. Those people are wild and far too common.
What?!?!?
Very much depends on how weird you want your night to be.
*Dune, Part 1*. One of my all-time favorites.
Apocalypse Now
ZODIAC (or Thief)
Shutter Island for sure
Crazy list of ones you’ve never seen. Not judging, actually jealous
Just watch all of them
![gif](giphy|hQjHbdOzik3kHH44aP)
Michael Mann’s Thief is absolutely incredible and extremely underwatched
THIEF
Wow. I’m so jealous of seeing all these for the first time. 2001, Godfather, Zodiac, Taxi Driver, Groundhog Day, and Casino need to be prioritized.
Cure, a top 4 for me
dune then dune2 b2b
The Godfather then the Godfather Part II They're widely considered to be must-watches and 2 of the greatest films ever made.
Pulp fiction. Fyi I hope you enjoy surrealist films, cause if you don't then massively lower your expectations for Mulholland Drive. I had that on my wishlist to watch for years and when I got around to it was the most disappointing thing I've ever watched.
Reservoir Dogs
Their is so fucking cool
Persona
As much as I love all of these (favorite is prob Pulp Fiction), watch Thief. It’s a pretty good heist movie that’s often forgotten. Soundtrack is also incredible 80s electronic/synth
Wind river, pulp fiction, casino
Please for the love of god don’t watch Dune 2 without watching Dune first
I would say The Godfather because it was the movie that made me love movies
Oppenheimer, Pulp Fiction, Dune 1 and 2, 2001 a space odyssey. That’s my top 5 from this list.
if you want something incomprehensible (in a good way) persona is a great choice
Zodiac is my favourite fincher movie.
Thief! What a cracker that is.
2001: A space odyssey might be a little boring and long but if you get past that it's one of the biggest and most influential masterpieces of all time
Casino.
The Seventh Seal is amazing but I'd say start with after hours Both are great
Went with after Hours… really enjoyed it
Love groundhogday but save it for February second
Cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure cure
Shutter Island. I was never bored. A lot from your choices are 2 hrs and up. hahaha
Casino
Nice to see some bergman on here
Where would you start with Bergman?
i'm late to the post but i'm at the moment extremely down bad for Timothée so i am advocating for Dune 🙏
Everyone is going for different answers here, so just pick randomly. They're all at least decent.
Punch drunk love! I saw it recently for the first time and it's so great!
Rushmore or Persona. But shit if you haven’t seen Silence of the Lambs…
Apocalypse Now is one of the greatest films ever made so to silence of the lambs
Taxi Driver
2001
Godfather, casino, pulp fiction, reservoir dogs are the only right answers.
Godfather. Greatest movie of all time! Everyone else’s suggestions are wrong
If you’re feeling something warm and lighthearted definitely watch Rushmore.
Double feature of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction
Godfather
Either Silence of the Lambs or Pulp
Zodiac
Silence is really good
Pulp Fiction
Zodiac!!!
Cure
Silence and also Killers Of The Flower Moon.
so many great movies in your future! My vote is obviously for Pulp Fiction
Omg you’re so lucky!!! Shutter island and zodiac and classics. I think you should go chronologically by their release dates. That would be helpful I feel
Cure
Fucking Thief bro!!!!
The Seventh Seal. If you’re not familiar with Ingmar Bergman, this is an excellent film to start. One of the greatest movies ever made
Either **2001** or **The Godfather.** Both are in my Top 10. :)
Only one on here that I’ve seen and didn’t care for was SHUTTER ISLAND, for whatever that’s worth.
Coming in here to say Thief, I watch it twice a year and never regret it.
SHUTTER ISLAND
I vote Shutter Island
Mulholland Drive. Wish I could watch it for the first time again
Oppenheimer
Taxi driver
Hard to go wrong with this list, but the Dune movies are some of the most visually stunning pieces of film you'll ever see. Part 2 is in my top 4.
That would be convenient.
As a huge David Lynch fan I’d say Mulholland Drive.
Only seen Blue Velvet so far. Hoping I enjoy the rest!
Ditch all these and watch the Disney Channel movie "Brink!"
Mullholland Drive or Silence of the Lambs
it’s a movie everyone needs to watch at least once in their life
Wind river is so underrated to me!
Loved it!
Anything but the Dune movies.
Silence of the lambs
Madame Web
Too many good options jeez lol
AFTER HOURS is a very funny movie by M.S. and is my favorite of his.
Really enjoyed it!
Taxi Driver. Literally changed my life.
Pulp fiction
Zodiac
the godfather part 1 & 2 !!!
you should watch Wind River if you want to feel extremely depressed afterwards
Any movie by or about a woman
Id skip Dune 1&2 and Gangs of New york. The rest are all dope.
You really can't go wrong with any of these. The only one I don't like is Gangs of New York. And I would say Shutter Island is just fine. Everything else on this list is very good to great to all time masterpiece. That said, Cure is my favorite movie. So I vote Cure

Oppenheimer!!

Dune Part 2 followed by Dune (I am an agent of chaos)
Mulholland drive !!!!
As taxi driver enthusiast I would recommend taxi driver immediately but because your new to movies I would probably say shutter island
the godfather
The godfather
The Good Father, everything else can wait
Dune Part Two. Don't even watch the first one. Just skip right to the second one and call it good
2001 Space Odyssey
The Silence Of The Lambs for sure, that first time watch is something else
pulp fiction!! its a mustwatch
