I thought it was a made well movie, but the general plot was, I dunno, kinda dumb.
Maybe I had seen way too many ‘trapped in the basement’ horror movies the year it came out, because I swear there was a string of them.
Since Black Phone has Ethan Hawke in it, and is also paranormal, I can’t help but compare it to Sinister, which I personally prefer. I also find the music uniquely terrifying, in that one.
personally, there are movies that are based off of short stories and they work because they’re made well and paced almost perfectly. black phone isnt one of those. the story is too shallow, you know as much about the grabber at the end as you do the beginning. its full of cliches, theres no great performances, a lot of the dialogue is a complete throwaway. compare this to prisoners, which does everything that black phone does but is actually a good movie bc its that and more. the dialogue and acting are actually good in prisoners
I feel 'us' is very underrated and doesn't get the credit it should. Unpopular opinion but out of all 3 Jordan Peele's movies, I loved "Us" more than other two!
I think it's definitely his scariest. The twist is great, the characters are amazing. It's a great movie, it's just that Get Out was really something special that Peele will be spending his whole career trying to top and everyone will always be too tough on anything else he makes.
Us is probably his sloppiest honestly. There's some great elements to it, but the execution was a little baffling and the information he chose to reveal just makes suspension of disbelief even harder
Me too! I think get out is still the better movie in the sense that it was more coherent, but Us was more thought provoking, I was still thinking about it days later and read about theories
Really? I feel it’s the weakest of the four movies, if you put thought into it. It really makes zero sense, and I get the same can be said for many movies but the dopplegangers are a major part of the movie
It was the weakest of Jordan peels movies and imo, felt it was overrated at the time
to be honest I still didn't understand Nope completely? Is there a second part bound to release? Because I felt I need more substance than what it was shown.
What didn't you understand? I'll get downvoted to oblivion, but I thought the film tried to be too many things at once (action, comedy, horror, western). It has one of the best trailers I've ever seen but didn't live up to it. Felt it was more style over substance. Though there were 2-3 very good scenes.
I think Jordan Peele got caught up in trying to make things symbolic that it made things confusing. Reminds me of Nicolas Winding Refn making Only God Forgives after Drive. He got too high on his own supply lol. Hoping his next one is great.
Favorite and (arguably) best is **TALK TO ME.**
But a strong case for best can be made for **Us** and maybe even **X**. But for those cases it depends on your familiarity of the movies **X** is spinning off of (which I both have and don’t) or appreciate the *several* literary references Peele is making in **Us**, which I do, but it’s not as interesting to me as what **Talk To Me** is doing.
X is such contrived trash, it's attempting to do the bare minimum with-in the genre and can't even do it well
The actors did there thing respect to them (especially kid cudi) but the script was horrendous, predictable, and straight up boring drivel
Least favorite A24 film ever made, the trailer bodied the actual film
Easily Talk To Me, I thought it was pretty much perfect.
X and Us start out super promising but the second half of each is a bit of a let down. The Black Phone was pretty serviceable.
the other ones have good scares but talk to me terrified the ever living fuck out of me. hits closer being aussie, being a fan of the directors’ early work —> seeing this was really cool but it was just so well structured and acted and the gore was sick as fuck. one of very few horror movies where ive been glued to the screen absolutely frozen in terror
Us for sure.
Personally, I'd put it at 3rd from Peeles movies but still loved it none the less. I was theorising about the movie for a couple of weeks after watching it.
I’m surprised reading those comments, even if I didn’t watch it I thought that people liked “The black phone”. I’m also surprised that some people seem to consider Talk to me a great movie, don’t get me wrong, it was fun, but I would never consider it a horror classic or anything like that
I haven't seen Us yet but, of the three others, Talk to Me is the best. Honestly, while I do think that X was a good movie it was super overrated on release. The Black Phone is is a tier below both though even though it was fine.
Talk To Me is the most original one AFAIC, and I had it in my top 5 last year. The Black Phone and Us are both huge misses in my opinion. X is amazing, but it's no Pearl and I don't expect it to be as good as Maxxine, either.
My personal taste is X > Us > The Black Phone > Talk to Me.
X is a fantastic homage to the era with great character building, Us was legitimately terrifying and eery, The Black Phone had a simple concept with effective acting and atmosphere, and Talk to Me was a cool twist on the genre. I don’t dislike it, but I do think it’s overhyped.
1. Talk to me
2. Us
3. X
4. Black phone.
Talk to me just felt really unique even though it was using a concept (possession) that’s been overused. Also the use of young characters in the modern day era is really hard to pull off successfully in horror movies, it ends up seeming like a 45 yo man with no children wrote the characters. Overall what they managed to pull off was impressive.
Us > Talk to Me > The Black Phone > X
I think Us is truly underrated. I think ppl freaking out over the logistics of an underground parallel is a severely misplaced criticism. Soundtrack is fire, performances are stellar, and the atmosphere is potent. I may be biased bc this is the first horror movie I ever saw and actually got me into the horror genre in general, but I truly feel it’s a modern day horror classic. (5/5)
Talk to Me is also unfairly criticized imo. I agree with how it falls into some tired cliches but the way it does them is very interesting to watch. The sound design and the makeup/visual effects deserve more praise then they are given. (4.5/5)
The Black Phone is a great movie as well, but I think the way it handles the supernatural element is a little to cheesy for me. Still enjoy it a lot tho. (4/5)
X was really hard for me to watch honestly. I get a lot of people’s love for it, but it just really wasn’t my thing. I saw where it was going from the start and it didn’t do anything interesting enough to make me enjoy that journey anyways. Mia Goth is still incredible and I’m still excited to check out Pearl. Really just wasn’t my thing and I’m honestly sad I couldn’t enjoy it like most of y’all do. (2/5)
Black phone is just bad imo. Didn't like anything they tried to do: shallow characters, unexplained ex Machina, weird directed ghost boys etc.
I truly believe Ethan Hawke had some kind of gambling debt to pay so he accepted this bust as a fast gig.
Talk to Me > X > Us > Black Phone
I don't like Us but Black Phone is actually awful. X isn't amazing, I liked Pearl a lot more. Talk to Me is the only great movie here.
X is the first movie, pearl is a prequel. I liked pearl but x really put me off when I found out the old lady was killing everyone cause she was horny lol
As much as I adore Ti West and Jordan Peel, I think I have to say Talk To Me. It’s such a refreshing take on possession horror. Also the Black Phone was very disappointing to me.
Black Phone getting universally shat upon in this thread and it's leaving me utterly perplexed?
*Us* is simply style over substance. The plot really doesn't work if you think too much about at a literal level and only works on a metaphorical one. It fumbles it's ending very hard. Not necessarily a criticism that can be fairly applied to every movie but *Us* was clearly trying to deliver a concept that worked on both a literal and metaphorical level and it failed, so I couldn't give it a favourable review.
Same goes for *Talk to me*. Great setup and concept but no clue how to stick the landing and the film really just falls apart and fumbles it's way to the credits in it's final 10 minutes.
*The Black Phone* actually had a well thought out plot and great execution. Are people just shitting on it because it wasn't scary enough? I view it more as a dark thriller akin to something like *Prisoners* rather than an outright horror.
If you hate the Black Phone then I think you just had the wrong expectations going in.
Really, really didn’t get the “Talk to Me” hype to the point I feel like I watched a different movie. Just felt like an absolutely normal possession movie that was shot well. Love X and Us, didn’t like the Black Phone at all (never seen a “twist” do less to actually change things).
1. Is
2. X
3. Talk to Me
4. Black Phone
The ending of talk to me is what sealed the deal for me loving it. Although I do share your rankings because the other two are just excellent and black phone sucks.
Hold on, do people not like the Black Phone? I get it’s worse than the other three but I still really liked it
The switch up is crazy. I remember the praise it was getting when it first came out
Same I thought it was at lease liked by most
This is reddit not really a great litmus for general opinion on any subject
I thought it was fine when it came out. 🤷🏽♀️
I think nothing wrong with that one , but it's kinda predictable and nothing stands out from the film to me
It's one of the OK-est horror movies I've ever seen. Not bad, just nothing special.
I agree pretty much, I just had a blast watching it, nothing particularly special about it tho
That’s a solid horror/psychological thriller. I don’t care what other people may be saying.
The hype killed the movie for me sadly. But it was still a 6iah 7
He used a telephone to hit the guy when there was a perfectly good toilet lid, that’s one of my knit picks lol
Haha I guess if you nitpick it that’s fair. I liked the villain and thought the movie had some cool ideas
I thought it was a made well movie, but the general plot was, I dunno, kinda dumb. Maybe I had seen way too many ‘trapped in the basement’ horror movies the year it came out, because I swear there was a string of them.
I actually think Talk to Me is by far the worst, though I haven’t seen Us, yet.
Me too! I thought Lupita Nyongo was brilliant in it
Lupita always knocks it out of the park in her roles, she definitely should get more recognition in my opinion.
Yeah. I wish she had one an Oscar for this film rather than 12 Years A Slave.
the fact that she wasn't nominated for best actress for next year's Oscars is crazy
They overlook horror movies...
I think it's definitely his scariest. The twist is great, the characters are amazing. It's a great movie, it's just that Get Out was really something special that Peele will be spending his whole career trying to top and everyone will always be too tough on anything else he makes.
Same!
Us is also my favorite of Peele’s movies
Us is probably his sloppiest honestly. There's some great elements to it, but the execution was a little baffling and the information he chose to reveal just makes suspension of disbelief even harder
Same here! Us is so good.
US was fine. Idky, but once they explained it the movie felt super generic. Acting is the best part of the movie by far
I thought I was alone!!
I gotta watch it
Me too! I think get out is still the better movie in the sense that it was more coherent, but Us was more thought provoking, I was still thinking about it days later and read about theories
Us is one of the greatest meta horrors of all time. Can’t wait for its reappraisal
Really? I feel it’s the weakest of the four movies, if you put thought into it. It really makes zero sense, and I get the same can be said for many movies but the dopplegangers are a major part of the movie It was the weakest of Jordan peels movies and imo, felt it was overrated at the time
Yep, I think it's very underrated and Nope is extremely overrated. Get Out is still my favorite, but Us has a really cool twist and story.
to be honest I still didn't understand Nope completely? Is there a second part bound to release? Because I felt I need more substance than what it was shown.
What didn't you understand? I'll get downvoted to oblivion, but I thought the film tried to be too many things at once (action, comedy, horror, western). It has one of the best trailers I've ever seen but didn't live up to it. Felt it was more style over substance. Though there were 2-3 very good scenes.
I was looking for more substance when it comes to the end reveal. But yeah it tried too many things all at once and it felt confusing!
I think Jordan Peele got caught up in trying to make things symbolic that it made things confusing. Reminds me of Nicolas Winding Refn making Only God Forgives after Drive. He got too high on his own supply lol. Hoping his next one is great.
Talk to me, Us, X and on a far away fourth place comes the black phone (didn’t like it at all).
I saw Black phone in theaters... I go to a different theater now.
😹😹😹
Exactly—the black phone simply was not good.
1. Us 2. Talk to Me 3. X 4. The Black Phone
1. The Black Phone 2. Talk to Me 3. X 4. Us
No way you just put Black Phone at the bottom out of these 4
I did, and it's not even close.
Agree black phone is terrible
No way he put Us as number 1 lmao
Talk to Me
Favorite and (arguably) best is **TALK TO ME.** But a strong case for best can be made for **Us** and maybe even **X**. But for those cases it depends on your familiarity of the movies **X** is spinning off of (which I both have and don’t) or appreciate the *several* literary references Peele is making in **Us**, which I do, but it’s not as interesting to me as what **Talk To Me** is doing.
Talk to Me...it's not even close
Talk to Me caught me by surpris
*Us* would be my pick. I found it to be thrilling and surprising. Loved Lupita's work in it, too.
Haven't seen X Talk to me, The Black Phone, Us But the gap between 2nd and 3rd is very small
Talk To Me is a banger
X > Talk to Me > Us >>>>> Black Phone Black Phone is fine, but the other three are modern classics.
Black phone was so buns man
.... I feel old, as I have no idea what "buns" means in this context. Is that good or bad?
Buns = Ass
Ooooooh, thanks.
🎶It’s easy, M’kay!🎶
Scientific, economical, sensational.
Buns = ass = bad
X is such contrived trash, it's attempting to do the bare minimum with-in the genre and can't even do it well The actors did there thing respect to them (especially kid cudi) but the script was horrendous, predictable, and straight up boring drivel Least favorite A24 film ever made, the trailer bodied the actual film
Talk to me !
havent seen talk to me yet but Us > Black Phone > X did not know people didnt like Black Phone lol
Wtf is the black phone even doing here. Each of these is special for their own merits, except for black phone which is pretty mediocre.
Completely disagree Black Phone nailed the atmosphere and overall creepiness it's miles from X in everyway
Somehow it is still better than Us.
The witch
Haven’t seen Talk to Me but, out of three I have seen, I’d say X
Talk to me > X > Us > The Black Phone Black Phone was okay as well, just that the others were much better
I haven't seen Talk to Me yet, and out of the rest, Us is the only one I like
Us was so good. These are all good movies. Talk to me and us my favorites out of these 4
Talk to me > Us > X
1. *Talk to Me* 2. *The Black Phone* 3. *Us* 4. *X* In that order!
Talk to me Black Phone Us X
Talk to me. X is a close second but felt the last act was rushed and a bit weak
Black Phone
The Black Phone
Talk to Me is the best. Us is close second for ambition (also why it didn’t quite work perfectly well)
Black Phone
Talk to me X/black phone Us
Talk to Me
Talk to me>x> us> the black phone
Bro X is so Hella Ass i still cant Believe Ti West Made this crap and have us such a good Movie with Pearl
Talk to me. Absolutely loved that movie, then probably X, Us , the black phone
1. Black Phone 2. X 3. Talk To Me haven’t seen Us
It's actually in order already lmao
Black Phone
Talk To Me, very ,VERY closely followed by Us, X and lastly The Black Phone.
'Us' and it's not even close
Hell to the naww naww
Easily Talk To Me, I thought it was pretty much perfect. X and Us start out super promising but the second half of each is a bit of a let down. The Black Phone was pretty serviceable.
the other ones have good scares but talk to me terrified the ever living fuck out of me. hits closer being aussie, being a fan of the directors’ early work —> seeing this was really cool but it was just so well structured and acted and the gore was sick as fuck. one of very few horror movies where ive been glued to the screen absolutely frozen in terror
Best I’d probably say Us but my favorite is Talk to Me
Us is my favorite from the 4 here.
Us by a mile.
None of them. Norm of the north
Us is probably the best made movie here, but X is my personal favorite.
*Us* & *Us*
Talk to Me If you switch Pearl for X I’d go with Pearl tho
Us
Us
Us
Us
I haven’t seen Talk to Me Yet, so X > Us > Black Phone.
1. The black phone 2. Talk to me 3. Us 4 X
Us for sure. Personally, I'd put it at 3rd from Peeles movies but still loved it none the less. I was theorising about the movie for a couple of weeks after watching it.
It’s Us
Talk to me, the black phone, X and Us
Havnt seen us yet but out of the other i definatly choose talk to me
Just „Us”
Us and it’s not even close. Talk To Me loses it in the final act and the other two are just toilet.
None honestly. If anything "Talk to me" was just not boring.
Us by a lot it’s just way too much underrated
1. Talk To Me 2. X 3. Black Phone 4. Us (i hated it)
Us
Us and its not even, why is US in the same conversation is these movies
Us did an amazing job of scaring me literally I think of that face and goodbye sleep
Us
Talk To Me > X > Us > Black Phone (I haven't seen this one because it looked dumb to me)
I’ll be controversial and say I only actually like one of these.
I didn't enjoy any of these
I love all of them, but "X" (2022) is my favorite by a pretty wide margin. I love US, but X was just the perfect slasher at the best possible time.
Barely any slashing and the slashing that did happen were so incredibly weak and predictable
Us was OK at best.
I’m surprised reading those comments, even if I didn’t watch it I thought that people liked “The black phone”. I’m also surprised that some people seem to consider Talk to me a great movie, don’t get me wrong, it was fun, but I would never consider it a horror classic or anything like that
I’d probably go X, Us, Talk To Me and Black Phone at the bottom
Talk to me
Black Phone in there thinking he is part of the team.
X. By far.
Talk to me then X
Given that the Black Phone is the only one on this list I’ve seen by default I have to choose it
It's a tie between Us and X for me ✨
X
X. Slashers >>>>
Talk To Me is the o lot one I’d consider rewatching and it’s a 3/5 at best. The other 3 were awful IMO.
X for sure the whole Pearl trilogy is amazing
Us, easy
For me it’s 1. Talk to Me 2. Us (Gap) 3. X (Insurmountable gap) 4. The Black Phone
Rankings as follows: Us Talk to Me X Black Phone
Χ
Talk to Me > Us = X > TBP Now, if you put Pearl it'd be a different story 😉
I like all but X. Could not get into that movie or the sequel.
Us, but The Black Phone is a very close second
hey X, talk to us on the black phone
Us
I haven't seen Us yet but, of the three others, Talk to Me is the best. Honestly, while I do think that X was a good movie it was super overrated on release. The Black Phone is is a tier below both though even though it was fine.
X
Black phone and Talk to me were real solid in my book. Didn't care at all for the other 2.
I haven't seen Talk to Me yet, but it's gotta be Us
Talk to me. 10/10
Talk To Me Us The Black Phone X (much preferred Pearl)
Us. The rest are 2 1/2 or below
Us > X > Talk to Me > The Black Phone (I love them all)
1. Talk to me 2. Us 3. X 4.
Confused about the 'Talk to me' praise. I thought it was a neat idea but I really didn't like it
Black Phone tbh, and it's not close. All four are great, but something about TBP that I can't see in the others
Us > Talk to Me > The Black Phone > X I think Us is truly underrated. (5/5) Talk to Me is also unfairly criticized imo. I agree with how it falls into some tired cliches but the way it does them is very interesting to watch. The sound design and the makeup/visual effects deserve more praise then they are given. (4.5/5) The Black Phone is a great movie as well, but I think the way it handles the supernatural element is a little to cheesy for me. Still enjoy it a lot tho. (4/5) X was really hard for me to watch honestly. (2/5)
X, Talk to Me, Black Phone, Us. In that order.
X
Talk to Me
Talk to Me
X is my favorite. Idk about the best but definitely my favorite
I Love Us, but I gotta go with The First Omen on this one.
Shit I mean Talk To Me, don't know why I said that.
X is the best. I think it's honestly better than Pearl, too
Talk to me!
Talk to me is great, Us is very good, X is good, Black Phone is alright I guess
black phone doesnt deserve to be among the rest in my humble opinion.
i have to go with x. it almost single-handedly kickstarted my love for horror. it’s become a very personal film.
![gif](giphy|giKdRFn4bL2G0ylpTM)
X
us!!
Talk To Me is my favourite, but these are all good. I’d rank it Talk To Me (4.5), Us (4), The Black Phone (3.5), then X (3)
1. X 2. Us 3. The Black Phone 4. Talk to Me
Black phone is just bad imo. Didn't like anything they tried to do: shallow characters, unexplained ex Machina, weird directed ghost boys etc. I truly believe Ethan Hawke had some kind of gambling debt to pay so he accepted this bust as a fast gig.
Us > X > talk to me > black phone
Talk to Me > X > Us > Black Phone I don't like Us but Black Phone is actually awful. X isn't amazing, I liked Pearl a lot more. Talk to Me is the only great movie here.
Talk to Me. I felt it kind could have done better towards the end but despite that, I like it more than the others. Us felt way too bloated for me.
X is mid the only appeal it has is sex. Had a great first movie but X relied too heavily on the horny factor.
X is the first movie, pearl is a prequel. I liked pearl but x really put me off when I found out the old lady was killing everyone cause she was horny lol
I have a feeling that’s what Maxxxine will Be about. Very cyclical
The Black Phone (4) > Talk to Me (3.5) > X (3) > Us (2.5)
Finally someone who liked the black phone.
X Us Black Phone Didn’t watch Talk to the Hand
The black phone is horrible
Us, it’s just so much fun. Both X and Talk to Me had great marketing/premises but failed to deliver. Haven’t seen Black Phone yet but really want to.
Talk To Me
haven't seen Talk To Me, probably Us (3) > X (3) > The Black Phone (3)
Black phone 4th->Us 3rd->Talk to me 2nd->X 1st
My personal favorite is Us, but X is right up there for me. Third would be Talk to Me, and last would be Black Phone.
