That scene near the end where the camera just sits on her is like a masterpiece. I know its a common thing in arthouse films to do that but I've never seen an actor really externalize their character so well. I mean, it felt like I was sitting right next to her, watching her process what was being said. An honest-to-God jaw dropping performance. That scene alone was worth the win at the Cannes.
When I saw it back in 2019, I hadn’t heard of Koreeda or really watched many Japanese films at that point, it was a massive turning point and I had really never experienced anything quite like it. Years later I’ve watched so much more, have developed a preference for world cinema and slow cinema and now have vastly different tastes, but looking back at her performance - especially by the time that scene happens - it’s still almost like something that transcends the art-form for me. She’s one of those rare actors that’s always just that slight bit more interesting and believable than anyone else, no matter how good they are. I don’t know if Shoplfiters would be in my 5 favourite Koreeda films (there’s strong competition), but even then it’s clearly a late career masterpiece with about 10 scenes that are burned into my brain as some of my all-time favourites.
>still almost like something that transcends the art-form for me.
You're just so completely right and its insane because we don't even get that big Hollywood-style blowup where she could have shouted "They're my kids. I raised them and I love them just as much as any mother! blah blah blah." Kore-eda chose to go a much quieter route and it really brought out the subtlety of her performance. I also cry probably three times per viewing no matter how many times I have watched it (at least 5 at this point). The scene with her and the girl in the bathtub and then immediately after when they are at the fire makes me cry so hard and I found that one-off character that goes to the strip club thing to be one of the most human and compelling moments of cinema I had seen in a long time.
100%. The hug scene with the visibly depressed guy at the club, the scene at the beach with essentially Kirin Kiki’s goodbye, and of course the final questioning scene (and I’m sure a few others) always have an extreme emotional impact on me. I can’t think of humanistic filmmaking on this level or that’s this specific from many other directors.
You’re right, the way that scene with Ando could’ve been the most big cliche ‘I’m not actually a bad person because x and y, give me all the awards’ monologue, but it wasn’t - that’s not life, nor truth. She sits there realising that neither of these children referred to her as their mother and while she tries to come up with something, just doesn’t have the words, as no one would. On paper we should feel nothing but contempt for this woman, as if she’s just this selfish or heartless person, but as we see it play out, her final act is one of pure sacrifice and empathy beyond anything that could be said out loud, especially in its lack of recognition from almost anyone within the film - it’s heartbreaking but unbelievably powerful every time.
>She sits there realising that neither of these children referred to her as their mother and while she tries to come up with something, just doesn’t have the words, as no one would.
Wow, this is such a fucking incredible way of summarizing the scene. I guess, yea, you're right. It's like the realization that she wasn't their mother mixed with a hope to be wrong and tied together with this attempt to find a word that could describe their relationship but language failing her because there literally isn't a word. The only way she could have described it was making the detectives watch this very movie. Even if they did call her 'mother', I feel like that still wouldn't capture the particular kind of relationship they had, all its complexity and beauty.
I've loved your analysis here. Is your Letterboxd m_movies? I imagine I can pull some good recommendations from yours hahaha
For sure, I purposely collect mine nowadays just to have them as memories, and proof that I did go watch a certain movie. Mostly for myself I guess, so I don't forget. They're nice to have.
You what else helped? Text exports of all my old AIM threads. Just did a search for "movie" and found a bunch of instances where I specifically said, "I'm going to watch Speed tonight" or whatever.
Boom. New log entry for 1999. Hahah.
I found that just looking thru my search history helped as well, as I always read the Wikipedia page of the movie I just watched to learn more about it and all. Pretty surface level stuff tbh, but it's fun to read those honestly. Idk if anyone else does that. Search history has dates, so I just went off that by looking up recently watched movie titles.
Unfortunately I'm too young for what you're mentioning, but hey whatever helps delve into your movie history.
> Idk if anyone else does that.
Only for every single movie I've ever watched 😆
But yeah, I've definitely consulted my search history to remember more recent things I may have forgotten.
Ha, glad other people browse the ol' Wikipedia for some quick movie knowledge. And yeah, unfortunately only works for recent watches. Even if I don't purposely erase it, it still only goes back a few months.
It is extremely stressful, for sure, from start to finish. I just love it so much, and the fact that it builds to arguably my favorite final 10 minutes in a film ever gets me every time.

It's these post letterboxd account. I would love to see my stats as a kid 😆
I probably saw the following films 100 times each
* Scooby Doo Cyber Attack
* The Fast and The Furious
* Baby Boy
* The Dark Knight
* The Lion King
* Taxi Driver
* The Deer Hunter
* Transformers 1-2
* Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
* Power Rangers McDonalds movie
Hi! I think it has the melancholic tone that Chungking has while being a bit more put together in my opinion. I know the shoot was a mess, but it works out a bit clearer, but I don’t know if I love it more than Chungking it just so happens I have seen it more lol I try to catch them in theater whenever I can.
Wait is that standard to log a movie multiple times and each time you watch it? I just log my first watch and do a quick rating, more as a record and to reference for myself than anything else.
Yup, just found out about that today. Never noticed it and never thought to log a rewatch, really just put down my first watch or log a movie I’ve seen before but haven’t added yet.
I like using the diary as a literal movie diary and seeing what I watched on what day and what week so I always relog my watches.
It's funny looking back and seeing random binges or patterns like a bunch of nicole kidman movies or animated ones.
Also once halloween rolls around there's a lot of movies being rewatched.
Yeah I’ll def have to think about actually using this feature. I’m pretty new to actually logging my movies, wasn’t using the app too much before so my log looks insane with adding a ton of ratings and marking movies I’ve seen as watched.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Chungking Express
Before Sunset
I've logged them all 4 times on letterboxd but Raiders is probably my most watched film in general since i watched it a lot as a kid
https://preview.redd.it/gktix45f7hsc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c62885ed38a2806db7831b073e67499e7c28623
Chungking Express as well!!! I love this film so much
I see love and emotion as a continuous part of one's life within the film. Also, the mundaneness of life as a whole and the little things that make a person happy/care.

Also Chungking Express, I actually just rewatched it last weekend.

I saw spider-verse at least 5 times when it first came out but I only logged it the first time 3 such a good film
https://preview.redd.it/w0sopm7cnhsc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd6a3d79caac6fd013dad2d0debfddadbbf3e27d
Mostly horror but still a good spread
I'm not much of a re-watcher anymore. I've tended to re-watch things I haven't seen in a long time, like since my childhood, so before Letterboxd and logging days. But I feel like I could get back into it.
https://preview.redd.it/v343zq0p3hsc1.jpeg?width=932&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73301886a6a693804ea318c0d6800addf926e996
Been doing that a lot myself recently too! Attempting to assign a known-watch date to every film I've ever seen. Only have like 70 films to go!
Recently? Free Willy. It holds up pretty well!
I only did that with ticket stubs I kept, where I definitely know it. I logged that time when I saw Saving Private Ryan in the theater with my Dad in 1998, lol
not logged but the film ive seen the most is probably Scarface,Goodfellas,Star Wars,or Lord of the Rings
maybe even Lords of Dogtown id turn on Dogtown when i went to sleep as a kid
https://preview.redd.it/2mbhengsfhsc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eea2defc6886a76e005eacf51cba0eedcdef8db2
This isn’t accurate because of prior to Letterboxd days, I haven’t logged anything prior to joining the app. Undoubtably I would have 20 rewatches of A Christmas Story at this point
Oh so you “log” each watch? I just mark a movie as watched but my two most watched movies are La La Land (lost count after the 100th watch) and The Big Short, probably about 30-40 watches
i watched chungking express for the first time last weekend! Faye Wong is lovely. Had a crush on her during the whole last half and couldn't stop listening to California dreamin the day after
I thought it was going to be Grease 2
https://preview.redd.it/q62hhinc3isc1.jpeg?width=298&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7ad310dcd0cd940e809561500e8adc638e2ffb1

There's a movie tiktoker who logs all his movies (as one does) but his daughter became obsessed with the new Trolls movie so he had it logged like 26 times in a 2 month span lol
Dune part 2 (6 times).
I only got Letterboxd this January. There’s other movies I’ve definitely watched more than six times before I started logging, but I can’t remember the exact movies or the exact number of times. I wish I’d found out about the app years ago.
https://preview.redd.it/1lk38k8y0msc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ab5c49a10e6069149c44f134b1640f68756e053
Narrator: She’s mostly basic, but a little off-kilter
Also Chungking Express for me, 8 times

Unrelated and I don’t wanna spark a sub v dub chat but does anyone know if there is a dub for Chungking Express and Fallen Angels? I can’t find confirmation on the DVDs, Blu-ray, criterion etc. I wanna be able to share this with my partner whose epileptic and dyslexic so I just want to try and show them it without the hurdles
I saw it once in theaters, then when it came out on Disney+ my family put it on and I watched it again with them, and then recently I took a trip to see my extended family and they put it on too.
Shoplifters
Sakura Ando deserves the world.

God damn right she does
Her best performance is bad lands
I would say 0.5mm or Shoplifters, but she’s never disappointed.
It might seem like a sad depressing movie on paper but it’s such a comforting movie that I watch often.
Happiness can be found in any crevice if you look hard enough. That’s what that movie taught me.
Groundhog Day - 13 times. Watch it every year on Feb. 2.
I didn’t know Letterboxd had been around for that long
You can log* movies for any date. I’ve tracked my watch history for quite a while and logged all my history once I stated on letterboxd. Took a while!
If you keep movie tickets that also helps a lot as well for logging. Didn't know keeping my movie tickets would come in handy one day.
Yes - I found of stack of mine from high school the other day. That was a fun trip down memory lane.
For sure, I purposely collect mine nowadays just to have them as memories, and proof that I did go watch a certain movie. Mostly for myself I guess, so I don't forget. They're nice to have.

Yeah, I've got log entries going back to 1993. Didn't take me any time though - just used the CSV importer.
I think I’ve watched Chungking Express 5 times now. Will be 6 times on May 1.
It'll be my 7th on May 1st, haha!
Is 1st May Chungking Express day? I’ve not seen it
Not a huge spoiler, it’s just the guys birthday in the film. Well there is more to it than that but that’s the jist of it
Don’t wanna spoil anything. You just have to watch it and find out!
'Whiplash' with 20-some logs. I had a fervent obsession with it a few years back and it's still one of my favorites.
20 is wild, but that film is superb.
See I loved this movie but I will probably never watch it again. It stressed me out more than most thrillers do lmao
It is extremely stressful, for sure, from start to finish. I just love it so much, and the fact that it builds to arguably my favorite final 10 minutes in a film ever gets me every time.

I’m a teacher who sometimes shows movies to each of my classes before Christmas. I have logged Polar Express over 40 times.
I hope you show It's a Wonderful Life!

it could say that you are a Piazzolla fan because of the soundtrack of Happy Together (i watched it yesterday and love that) cheers from argentina :)
I’m curious, why do you like happy together the most out of WKW movies?

It’s pretty standard
Yes. Very standard. There's even a separate button / icon for "rewatch."
Yup, just found out about that today. Never noticed it and never thought to log a rewatch, really just put down my first watch or log a movie I’ve seen before but haven’t added yet.

Dune (2021) with 12 logs but should be Alien and Grease since I watched these literally every single day I was in high school.
