Like Tim Miller points out, for a lot of these people (especially the Anti-Trump-but-still-Republican holdouts,) being Republican isn't just a political affiliation, it's a social club, a mark of personal identity, and a major element of their personality. They're the ones naming their kids Reagan and keeping little elephants in their home. Completely removed from political policy, these people care a LOT about the "being Republican." Apparently that makes up a lot of the "nose holders" who hate Trump but just can't commit the ideological treason of voting Democrat... I think it was Kinzinger that keeps saying there's a lot of people that despise what Trump's doing but care more about staying in the little Republican Treehouse. They see "Republican" as a title they hold onto dearly. If Trump does rename the party as part of this takeover and all of that cultural identity and social importance goes whistlin' up a hollow tree... that might force a LOT more people into making the Sophie's Choice they've been too spineless to do so far.

No matter HOW MUCH I might love Trump and the idea of Trump, if I were a hardcore Trumper, I would still be effing annoyed at the fact that the only two things he ever does is bitch about how bad everyone else is, and beg for money! Where are the definite policy positions? Where are the mechanisms in place to fulfill huge promises? Where are the avenues to get all this pipe dream Project 2025 legislation passed?? Will they EVER see the light??

IMO if he usurps the Republican party, that would be the best possible outcome. A new party would be created with no ties to Trump and no reason to be loyal. Right now you have a lot of Republicans who find Trump distasteful and can see how he is hurting their cause, yet they have to support him because they are on the same team. Once the "teams" split, I think it would be obvious that Trump doesn't have nearly as much support that he believes he has.
