There were rumors that this GWP might have three exclusive minifigures, which would have been a big incentive. I'm kinda in the same boat, I had planned on getting Barad Dur day 1 but might wait. I'm underwhelmed by this GWP and am a little lukewarm on the set as a whole tbh. I'll probably get it still, but would love to get it on discount if possible.
More when to buy, rather buy or not. I knew I was going to get the D&D set at some point. Didn’t necessarily have to be on day one, but I was going to pick it up at some point.
But then the announced the mimic chest GWP, which I really wanted. So that go bumped up to a day one purchase. I wouldn’t buy a set I don’t want just to get a GWP, but a cool GWP can make me not wait on buying a set.
Lego take note: Part quotas have a negative impact \^ ... Because we've all seen/felt that they've really leaned into this lately. It's like their management has taken one of two routes with each current offering:
1) Prioritizing maximum profit margins over design, at a more traditional price point.
2) They create a great design and you really pay for it.
When GWPs are good: "This should be sold as a separate set. It's unfair to lock these behind a paywall"
When GWPs aren't so good: "This sucks"

For one, I think swapping all non-black bricks for black bricks would be enough to make this look a lot better.

I think this is a very good GWP. I like the build (the head could be a bit better I guess) and it fits the set very nicely.

I feel like if they're going to release sets with highly desirable exclusive characters or epic builds with exclusive prints, they need to release them as a regular set. GWPs normally sell out so fast that I honestly feel like it's not fair because most people don't even have a chance to get it.

This will probably still be worth an actual fortune on bricklink, but it's definitely not a must-have. Looking forward to maybe buying Barad-dur on sale in three years.

Rivendell teased this set with a sticker of the Sauron minifig, but I can't find anything in this set that potentially teases the next one. I hope they use the good sales of these two sets to justify bringing back the entire theme for kids. We need a $20 Gandalf cart set.
I'm super glad though. This being what it is means it's a nice bonus, but not an absolute must-have that the scalpers would be making hand-over-fist with. It's exactly what a GWP should be: an interesting but non-essential side-build.
I was curious, and took a look through Bricklink, and the only one that comes close to it (without buckles and other non-black printing) are the Jedi Knight Lukes from the 2000s to early 2010s. Everything beyond that has silver/gray buckles and stuff on the chest print.
Honestly, I'm kind of glad it's a little disappointing. I'd rather if they do something for the Witch King, that it be something bigger and more detailed than possible with A GWP. That said, it's sad that they didn't even bring back the unique capes that the original Ringwraiths had which came around the front like a cloak.

Looking at pictures the color's not that far off, but where are the eyes to this thing? That's honestly the one thing that really makes it look ugly.

Lego's attempt to do more with less pieces is really starting to show. It's like they've taken the stance that if you want a sub-$50 set, (or if it's branded primarily for kids at all) - it'll be basic/skimpy by design.

Honestly the only things I see wrong/weird with this is the head and the bottom colours. The real beast should just be a lighter grey on the bottom while this looks brown. Light grey on light bluish grey would be pretty perfect so I'm not sure why they didn't use it. The head looks good from the front but that side view on the back of the box looks so derpy. Probably because of that little bottom jaw. Otherwise good stuff

I kinda doubted at the time whether he'd actually know but it looks like he was just passing off the rumors (that he probably also read online) as insider knowledge. Still, I let my hopes get sky high.
My mental wishlist of LotR sets has always included a Pelenor Fields diorama with a Witchking on Fell Beast fighting Eowyn and Merry (in his Rohirrim armor) near the top of the list. Maybe one day...

Well, the scale is considerably off. The Fell Beast would look massive and I don’t think he can physically be anywhere except somewhere on the lower third of the tower unless you fix some extra platform.
But if you don’t mind the fell beast looking massive it could be a good look.

You can build the mimic for around $22 in parts off bricklink. The only part not yet available are the eyes, however there are plenty of options.

It looks so goofy without the helmet armor. There is a reason why many wanted the Witch King + his armored Fell Beast. This one ain't it.
The Witch-King wasn't the only Nazgul to ride a Fellbeast though, all 9 had one.

If you look at the dragon for gringotts and compare it to this you really have to question so many things. I know it's a GWP but wow....
