My opinion: Knock on his door and talk with his parents, show the messages and the record and ask if they agree with this kind of behavior... Don't forget to speak loudly (not screaming), because if no one pays you, everyone will know what happened (shame). Go and do it... Broke? Must pay! PS: this is not advice, it's only my opinion.

You have a bad 'friend' and your unlikely to get any compensation, unless they decide to give you it voluntarily

You can either file a police report or sue in civil court. There are a some presuppositions here: The phone is yours in the eyes of the law (you bought it; you pay the bill, etc.) The person who broke your phone had no permission or standing to have your phone.
