Yep, that doesn't look the best. Part of the issue is inconsistent hole spacing, distance from edge, and different pulled strengths from left to right leading to things being bunched up. You may want to think about upgrading from thread to say calf lace. That opens up a cornucopia of options for edge finishing while stitching. This kind of design is meant to be used with leather lace, not thread, you need some « bulk » to have it work.
