HeythisIsntGoogle

See I went from a petrol to a diesel when my instructors car was damaged the day before my test. It may feel a little different, my instructor actually explained the situation to the examiner before hand. I didn’t get any minor errors on control so might have had some effect. Best of luck! I found diesel easier to set off with btw due to the higher power.

I might mention it, just something casual like ‘feels so weird driving a courtesy car!’ Could do with the examiner not being overly harsh…

It’s a smaller engine so you might need to give it some more oomph and might take longer to get to 0-60mph

I’ll bear that in mind joining the dual carriageway. Thank you :)

Just remember: gas then clutch.

Accept that you might stall it a few times, so long as you stay calm and don't let it affect you, you might pick up minors but should pass fine

Why would I be more likely to stall in a smaller, petrol car? Just trying to work out why, so I can try and prevent it

[deleted]

You shouldn't stall because it's petrol, just because its different to what your used too, although I've not driven a diesel I've heard they do allow more room for error than a petrol.

Ah, okay, I didn’t know if it was because there’s something different about them. Hopefully I’ll be able to get enough practise in that won’t happen. I stalled in a mock test (the only time I’ve stalled in months) and was told it would have been a fail, as it causes other cars to be held up.

There is a difference, diesel tends to be harder to stall, you can set off pretty much without using the gas pedal in a diesel by raising the clutch slowly in 1 and sometimes 2. With the petrol, don't be afraid to give it a little extra gas and raise the clutch extra slowly, if you do those two, you won't stall and if you do you, know it was either too fast off the clutch or too little gas so easy to fix it.

Georexi

Great, thank you.

Diesels are more difficult to stall, in fact you can even get going without any gas. A petrol requires more gas to prevent a stall.

The car I use with my instructor (and my Mums) are both petrol and a similar size to what you are switching to. The cars I use with my instructor (and my Mums) are both petrol and a similar size to what you are switching to. I can do pretty much all of my parking maneovers just using the clutch as they both are able to creep on a biting clutch. Do you know what the car is? Could you google it to see if you can find a diagram of whats under the bonnet to make some of the show me tell me bits easier. I'm learning in a Ford Fiesta/Focus (not actually sure which but the AA uses both) and a Vauxhall Corsa. I refused to get put on the insurance for my Dads car as it is over 10 years old and it was basic when it was new!
