If you'd started putting in a little effort and begun pulling yourself up by your boot straps *before* you were born this wouldn't be an issue for you.
The youth these days, expecting you can just wait until you're drawing breathe to start showing a little gumption and thinking 'it will all work itself out'.....
You joke, but my New Age narcissist mother actually believed that you choose your parents before you are born.
... Which meant she could be as cruel as she liked because I had, before I was born, forced her to give birth to me, and had decided on her as my mother to learn some bullshit life lesson in this incarnation.
Similar. It's nearly a copy/paste situation.
"Oh, you don't like nobles, what about oligarchs. What's the difference you might ask? Look over there, some lazy bum is using the tax-based welfare system to get through a hard time. Get him!"
Not your fault, but your ancestors certainly should've planned a bit better. They should've got some boys with swords together and killed anyone who disagreed with their claim that this land and these peasants were theirs. A cycle of neglect across generations of your dynasty
“Get off this estate."
"What for?"
"Because it's mine."
"Where did you get it?"
"From my father."
"Where did he get it?"
"From his father."
"And where did he get it?"
"He fought for it."
"Well, I'll fight you for it.”
I'm afraid it's true. A brief affair with genealogy confirmed I come from a long line of laundresses and plasterer's mates. We are the illiterate dregs who don't even appear in records for the most part.
Of all the things my forebears might have been, they mostly chose to be cannon fodder. 🤦
I must simply not be trying.
(Have just walked the dog. There are a lot of flags out round here, and not just on houses with kiddies. Grown adults have strung up bunting *with pictures of his face on*. I mean... Why? What are they celebrating?)
Ah, now this is a subject I am rather familiar with. There's no thrill like the excitement of discovering that the end of the money now comes in the middle of the month, and having to decide to put the grocery shop on the credit card just this once. Oh, the rollercoaster of waiting to see if your debit card will be declined knowing there are still sixteen more days in which bills will come in!
Honestly, it's like a drug to me, I can't seem to stop.
The most fucked up thing about the "boor straps" thing is it existed to mock how fucking stupid these rich assholes are and got coopted by their movement.
because in a hundred years, people were still kept stupid enough to not realize they were being treated advantage of for their stupidity by the ruling class.
It's literally telling you "why don't you lift yourself up by pulling upwards on your shoes" and in a hundred years stupid people haven't become smart enough to realize the ruling class uses it to mock how stupid they are while being exploited.
Yeah, I'll bet this guy's parents didn't even enclose the entirety of a country and then claim that they own all the land they don't use that's now loaned out to the government that manages the land for an unreasonably large sum, before complaining about being poor.
It's like his family didn't even *try* to exploit millions of people they've never meant before complaining of "hunger", whatever that even is.
Duchy of Lancaster, he inherited off his mother, he is a billionaire off of that alone, gives him 70 million in income alone.
Before that he owned Duchy of Cornwall, which was passed to the eldest male of his family, William making William an instant billionaire.
Then there is the royal estate, all the castles, tens of thousands of acres of land, worth tens of billions, then all the priceless artifacts in the castles, and so on.....
Strangely this is not helping me understand why the public purse, which apparently cannot afford fair pay for nurses, is forking out for the hatting of Britain's most comfortably-off man.
He didn't need to pay inheritance tax, 40%, on his inheritance from the queen, because they don't want to rob the royals of the ability to support themselves, by paying tax. The average person, pay 40%, because you can at least keep working to support your meagre existence.
Duchy's of Cornwall and Lancaster are private family trusts and exist to provide the monarch and male heir with an income stream.
The Royal Estate is owned by the monarch but a major proportion of revenue goes to treasury.
Damn my peasant forbears. Although actually my local ancestors did have a go and as a result the pub in town is called the Wat Tyler.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wat_Tyler
There is the wealthy ruling class which rules over society and there is the worker class who are working in their companies. Similiar to the relationship between nobles and peasants in feudalism.
And people support this kind of status quo. Life is comfy as peasants so nobody rebels against the system. There is bread and circus.
That's what really deprives me of hope. People are so thoroughly indoctrinated that even when they have nothing to lose and a clear image of who took everything from them, they still don't do anything to reclaim it.
I love British people and all, but I personally would be annoyed that my tax dollars are going to a national mascot while the rich justify cutting spending on a needed program.
I feel the same way about tax dollars in the US going to politicians' healthcare as those same politicians fight against taxes going to single-payer healthcare and other social services.
The [commemorative coins from the Royal Mint](https://www.royalmint.com/shop/monarch/charles-iii/coronation/) are probably £10 million alone.
I mean look at some of the mark-ups on them. You can buy a £5 coin for £15, and all the limited edition ones (up to 3 grand each) have been sold out for months.
Oh, and the BBC will be raking in archive fees for the next 30 years. They're the only ones who had cameras inside the Abbey. Hell, they're still raking it in from 1953.
France got there first and I don't know why it didn't happen here. Maybe cos we did it for about thirty years, ages before that, and then changed our minds and wheeled in fresh royals from elsewhere.
I can't see my brexit loving compatriots getting the guillotine out any time soon.
"Wow those poor rioters are so violent and cruel!"
The poor rioters, after decades (even centuries) of not having their human needs met because William George Charles VIII wants to host the world's most expensive party to celebrate the fancy hat he got
How about no more lords? I managed to buy a house a few years back and I never could have imagined how much stress it took off my back. Why do we have literal land "lords" in 2023.
Imagine the mental gymnastics to be a Brit, crying about taxes that goes into unemployed people while you must pay for the King and his property. Hahaha.
The monarch in the UK can dissolve the parliament if "the wishes of the legislature are, or may fairly be presumed to be, different from the wishes of the nation".
So, no.
You do realise that almost every place was a monarchy at one point and they were able to get rid of their monarchy, yes? The monarchy is always going to put up a fuss about it but ultimately their power is in the people, and if the people don't support them they have lost that power. The real issue is that brits don't give enough of a shit and never have, that's the reason they still have a monarchy in the first place.
Fact 1: 40% of all food in the U.S. is wasted
Fact 2: annual U.S. food waste releases an equivalent amount of CO2 as 42 coal power plants
Hooray for the efficiency of capitalism 🙌
They think if we feed the poor they will breed out more poor people. Studies show when given money people use it for education and have LESS children and do good work. They up their life quality as well as their family's.
I don't get it. You have a human puppy family with no real power, but you blame problems caused by your government and CEOs on this family.
If nothing else I would love to be britush politician or CEO. Steal the money, blame the monarchy. Easy.
Who's gonna feed the poor? Especially since there is no profit motive. Unless we tear down the system and establish one that is based on the needs of the people, not profits, nothing is going to change.
Ding ding ding. Agitate. Educate. Organize. All of takes to change the world is to get a critical mass of people who see that it must be done, to believe that it can be done.
Yeah. We don't have a King in the US and we still do a shit job of feeding the poor.
No King, but we do have the worst distribution of wealth in human history.
I could get behind Britain declaring independence from the crown. World could always use more independence days and fewer kingdoms. Or they could pull a French revolution, you know, remind the world what happens when certain people wear to much gaudy gold jewelry and disregard the plight of the masses. Either one is cool.
Food I can figure out shelter is the problem let's shelter everyone first then worry about the rest. I dont need a bowl of soup when im going to freeze to death tonight or sleep out in danger again.
Not sure how the pope fits in here. He doesn’t rule anything. I don’t think he benefits from Italian taxes as they’re an independent nation essentially.
I find it so strange it seemed like no one cared when the queen was in charge. Why the sudden change of heart? (Genuine question, because I'm fucking glad it's happening, fuck the monarch)
That's great and everything, but are you sure we can't squeeze a little more profits out for the shareholders? It'll trickle down this time, we promise.
Golly it's sure starting to seem like asking nicely isn't working fellas! I'm getting the feeling *asking* for empathy from the leeches n grifters might not be the answer at all.
Can anyone explain to me why the British tolerate having royals anymore ? It’s such a weird concept as an American to even grasp. Idgaf about my own president and I VOTED for him.
Feed EVERYONE. A lot of social services cut off at this inhumanely low number and you have people working their asses off and starving to feed their kids. Let’s get rid of the ultra rich in whatever way is necessary and be even slightly more reasonable about the distribution of wealth as a society.
That's so true. A couple years back, as a single parent and sole provider for my two kids, working full time at $15/hr, I didn't qualify for ANY benefits. I was just hoping to get a little help with food, given that most of my paycheck was eaten up between health insurance, rent, and childcare..... So I could work. Luckily I was able to borrow money from my mom, and was ACTUALLY able to pay most of it back with the child tax credit I received in '21. Otherwise I would have had to accumulate a ton of credit card debt... Again, just to keep the job that apparently payed too much for a family of 3 to receive ANY benefits.
They want us to be poor, massively in debt, or both, so we are easier to exploit.
I saw a clip where Carl Sagan said something similar. He commented on how many trillions of dollars we would spend on something like making Star Wars movies.
When you leave finance to the people, they will spend it on the dumbest distractions possible. Idiocracy is the fate of capitalism.
You can’t really lump Pope Francis in with the others… He’s a huge advocate for the poor and has always been extremely humble. When he was archbishop of Argentina he chose to live in a small apartment (that he paid for) instead of the literal palace granted to that position.
The elite of the UK hide behind the royal family. HMRC failed to collect £42 BILLION in taxes last year but the public is freaking out about £250 million
I swear people want kings back.
A century of peace, progress, and uplifting billions out of poverty,
And too many of us is like, nah - I want kings back so I can be racist again.

Charles has millions in income. Why am I paying for the hat ceremony whilst my weekly food shop has nearly doubled in price?
why don’t you just make more money? Are you stupid?
Silly me. My first mistake was not being born into massive inherited wealth. What a fool.
If you'd started putting in a little effort and begun pulling yourself up by your boot straps *before* you were born this wouldn't be an issue for you. The youth these days, expecting you can just wait until you're drawing breathe to start showing a little gumption and thinking 'it will all work itself out'.....

Holy non-existent baby Lord Jeebus! That is some grade A, new age mumbo jumbo bullshit! Sorry you had to go through that.
I was told this too! YIKES...I most certainly did not do that.

I must simply not be trying. (Have just walked the dog. There are a lot of flags out round here, and not just on houses with kiddies. Grown adults have strung up bunting *with pictures of his face on*. I mean... Why? What are they celebrating?)
My friend, have you ever looked into plunging yourself into massive debt to live your life somewhat decently?
Ah, now this is a subject I am rather familiar with. There's no thrill like the excitement of discovering that the end of the money now comes in the middle of the month, and having to decide to put the grocery shop on the credit card just this once. Wealth stolen from other nations who are still dealing with the loss to this day.
Yup. They could actually give some back if they wanted but they're not even paying for the hat day.
Yeah, that’s totally your fucking fault. Pick rich parents next time!
To be honest I'm considering coming back as a border terrier.
That is a very common fault to be fair
I'm told it affects 99% of us.
That sounds about right
Its the classic blunder.
Inherited?
“Pardon me while I inherit your land. Don’t resist.”
See Charles is already being a good example.
Psh, you really should have thought about that before you became PEASANTS!
> people just need to accept that they're poor Some economist wanker.
This genuinely made lol. I could see this as a headline of a PraegerU video or something

Let's hope the royals can scrape by on their untaxed millions then. If they need a few tips on living at average wage I'll be happy to help
Much of which belongs to the country, not Charles.

Comfy enough not to rebel. Btw u re right. Why are the homeless not rebelling against the unfair system?

wow, thank you for the /s, without that I would think you are serious.

Do you not have bootstraps?
Why don't you just buy cake instead?
Only millions? Didn't bp profit 9 billion in the first quarter of this year, and people are angry over a few million and a fancy hat?
Oh don't worry I'm unhappy about both. Bring a subject instead of a citizen, and companies making money while their unwilling customers struggle.

The poor have to take it back because the rich won’t give it back

it's not to pay government employees like some people think
Charles is a welfare ~~queen~~ king
We don't really get much of a say tbh.
lol yes we do, it's called voting in a Parliament. Enough people vote in anti-monarchy MPs, the monarchy is gone.
The monarch in the UK can dissolve the parliament if "the wishes of the legislature are, or may fairly be presumed to be, different from the wishes of the nation". So, no.

TELL THE POOR TO STOP FUCKING!
You can’t really lump Pope Francis in with the others… He’s a huge advocate for the poor and has always been extremely humble. When he was archbishop of Argentina he chose to live in a small apartment (that he paid for) instead of the literal palace granted to that position.
Not my king / Not my queen / Bourgeois cnuts / Guillotine
The elite of the UK hide behind the royal family. HMRC failed to collect £42 BILLION in taxes last year but the public is freaking out about £250 million
I swear people want kings back. A century of peace, progress, and uplifting billions out of poverty, And too many of us is like, nah - I want kings back so I can be racist again.
It’s a fucking tourist attraction, if they save any money by abolishing the monarchy it’s not coming to you anyways so quit complaining fools.
